Why is UFile not installing?

UFile not installing almost always traces to one of four things: a Windows version UFile does not support, a download that did not finish, security software blocking the installer, or a missing Windows update. As of September 2026, the UFile download page lists Windows 11 as the required operating system for UFile 2025, plus 250 MB of available disk space and a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 or higher (UFile, Download).

Only one of the two UFile products needs installing. UFile for Windows is a program you download and run on your own PC, and your returns are stored on that PC. UFile ONLINE runs in a web browser, so there is nothing to install and your file is kept on UFile's servers (UFile, Before you start). What are the UFile for Windows system requirements?

UFile for Windows 2025 needs Windows 11, 250 MB of free disk space, a 1024 x 768 display and an internet connection for NETFILE and software updates. Can I install UFile on Windows 10?

Yes, but at your own risk. UFile says UFile for Windows currently functions on Windows 10, but because Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 15, 2025, UFile can no longer offer official support, bug fixes or guaranteed compatibility on it, and recommends Windows 11 (UFile, Before you start). If an install fails on Windows 10, UFile support may simply tell you to upgrade.

Is there a UFile download for Mac?

No. The UFile download page offers only a Windows program, so a Mac user who searches for how to install UFile will not find an installer. Use UFile ONLINE in Safari, Chrome or another current browser, or pick a Canadian program with a Mac edition such as StudioTax (see StudioTax not working).

How to install UFile for Windows step by step

Install UFile from the official download page only, and make sure you pick the right tax year. The page offers UFile 2025 for 2025 returns and a separate link for the 2024 software; prior years are sold separately.

1. Check your Windows version: press Windows key + R, type winver and press Enter. The window should say Windows 11.
2. Confirm at least 250 MB of free space on drive C: in File Explorer, under This PC.
3. Download the installer from ufile.ca/download for the tax year you need. Wait until the browser shows the download as complete.
4. Open your Downloads folder, right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
5. If Windows SmartScreen shows a blue warning, confirm the file is the one you just downloaded from ufile.ca, then choose More info and Run anyway.
6. Follow the prompts, then open UFile and enter the licence information from your purchase email.
7. Before preparing a return, let UFile download its latest update while you are online.

What to do if the UFile installer fails or freezes

If the UFile installer stops with an error, freezes on a progress bar or closes without installing, work through these fixes in order. They are general Windows checks, not steps published by UFile, so contact UFile support if none of them works.

• Partial download: delete the installer file and download it again. A file far smaller than other people report usually means the download was cut off.
• Antivirus quarantine: open your antivirus history and see whether it removed or blocked the UFile file. Restore it, add an exception, and run the installer again.
• Pending Windows updates: open Settings, then Windows Update, install everything waiting and restart before trying again.
• Another install in progress: Windows allows one installer at a time. Restart the computer to clear a stuck update or setup.
• Standard user account: a work or family account without administrator rights cannot install programs. Sign in with an administrator account.
• Wrong year: a 2024 installer will not open 2025 returns. Check the year printed in the file name and on the download page.

Why does UFile keep crashing after it installs?

When UFile keeps crashing or UFile won't load after a successful install, the program is usually missing an update, running on an unsupported Windows 10 setup, or tripping over display scaling. Start with the software update, because an outdated build is the easiest cause to rule out and UFile uses the internet connection to fetch fixes.

1. Connect to the internet, open UFile and accept any update it offers.
2. Restart the computer, then open UFile before any other program.
3. If screens are cut off or the window closes on certain pages, open Settings, System, Display and set Scale to 100 percent while you use UFile.
4. Check that the screen resolution is at least 1024 x 768; smaller laptop settings can hide buttons.
5. If you use Windows 10, test on a Windows 11 computer or in UFile ONLINE before spending more time; UFile no longer fixes Windows 10 bugs.
6. As a last step, back up your return files, uninstall UFile from Settings, Apps, restart, and install a fresh download.

Can I install UFile on two computers?

Yes. UFile's Windows knowledge base says UFile may be installed on up to 2 computers, but the number of returns you can file is still limited by the licence you bought (UFile knowledge base, System requirements). Installing on a second computer does not double your returns.

UFile for Windows is sold by return count: UFile 4 for $26.99 or UFile 12 for $42.99, as listed by UFile in September 2026 (UFile, Before you start). Separately, the CRA limits NETFILE to 20 returns per computer or CRA account for each tax year (Canada.ca, NETFILE).

Moving your return to the second computer

Because the return file lives on the first computer, installing UFile on the second one does not bring your work with it. Copy the saved return file across on a USB drive or through a cloud folder, then open it from UFile on the new machine. Both computers should have the same tax year edition and the latest update.

When should I switch to UFile ONLINE instead?

Switch when you are on a Mac, on Windows 10 with repeated crashes, or close to a deadline with an installer that still fails. UFile ONLINE shares the core features of the Windows program, including NETFILE certification and Auto-fill my return, and it updates itself (UFile, Before you start). The 2025 return deadline was April 30, 2026, or June 15, 2026 if you or your spouse were self-employed (CRA, Important dates).
