Wealthsimple Tax import from TurboTax: what carries over when you switch

Short answer

A Wealthsimple Tax import from TurboTax is not possible: Wealthsimple says its tax software has no direct integration with any other tax program, so a TurboTax file cannot be opened. Instead, CRA Auto-fill brings in your slips, RRSP room, unused tuition and loss carryforwards, and you type the remaining carry-forward amounts from last year's notice of assessment or TurboTax summary.

Can Wealthsimple Tax import my TurboTax return?

No. Wealthsimple says it offers no direct integration with any other tax software, so Wealthsimple Tax cannot read the return file TurboTax saves on your computer or in your Intuit account. There is no upload button for another company's return, and renaming the file will not change that.

That sounds worse than it is. The data a prior-year transfer would normally bring over, such as your address, slips and most carryover balances, comes from the CRA instead through Auto-fill my return. What is left is a short list of amounts only you or your old return can supply.

What carries over when I switch from TurboTax to Wealthsimple Tax?

Wealthsimple publishes a list of the carry-forward items switchers most often need, the section of Wealthsimple Tax where each one goes, and whether Auto-fill supplies it. The table below follows that list.

Carry-forward items when switching to Wealthsimple Tax (Wealthsimple Help Centre)
Last year's itemWhere it goes in Wealthsimple TaxFilled by Auto-fill?
RRSP deduction limit and unused contributionsRRSP Contributions & DeductionYes
Unused tuition amountTuition and Education AmountsYes
Unused capital and non-capital lossesUnused LossesYes
Unused donation amountsDonations and GiftsNo
Unused student loan interestInterest Paid on Student LoansNo
Capital cost allowance (closing UCC by class)Business, rental, farming or employment expense sectionsNo
Unused use-of-home expensesUse-of-home tab in the business or employment sectionNo
Cumulative net investment loss (CNIL)Calculation of Cumulative Net Investment LossNo

Less common items also need typing: unused employment expenses, some provincial credits, mining credits, capital gains deduction amounts and alternative minimum tax carryforwards. Use the search box in Wealthsimple Tax to jump to the right section for each.

Using last year's return data without an import

Collect last year's numbers before you close your TurboTax account or uninstall the desktop program. Wealthsimple names three places to find them: your notice of assessment, CRA My Account, and the summary from your previous tax software.

  1. Save a PDF of last year's full return from TurboTax, including every schedule and worksheet it prints.
  2. Download last year's notice of assessment from CRA My Account. Its figures reflect any changes the CRA made, so they take priority over your own copy.
  3. Create your Wealthsimple Tax profile and complete About You, including SIN, date of birth and province.
  4. Run Auto-fill my return to bring in slips and the balances the CRA holds.
  5. Type in the items marked No in the table above, using the search box to find each section.
  6. Run Review & Optimize and compare the refund or balance owing with what you expected.

Worked example: a small landlord switching products

Say you own one rental unit and last year's TurboTax return showed a closing undepreciated capital cost (UCC) of $180,000 in class 1. None of that transfers. In Wealthsimple Tax, open Rental Income and enter $180,000 as this year's opening UCC for class 1, as Wealthsimple instructs. Skipping it would mean claiming no capital cost allowance at all.

The same applies to CNIL. Wealthsimple asks for the last two rows of last year's Form T936, lines 16 and 19, which you will find in the PDF you saved from TurboTax.

Carry-forward amounts to check before you file

Auto-fill copies what the CRA holds at the moment you run it, and the CRA's data can be wrong. In the 2025 season UFile reported a CRA Auto-fill issue that passed $8,000 instead of $0 as the variable B amount of the FHSA limit for some people who opened an FHSA in 2023; the CRA confirmed a fix on March 17, 2025. The lesson applies in any program: compare imported balances with your notice of assessment.

If the Wealthsimple Tax import fails

When people say the Wealthsimple Tax import failed, they usually mean Auto-fill brought in nothing or left gaps. Three checks cover most cases.

  • No slips at all: the CRA sign-in step did not finish. Allow pop-ups, sign out of other CRA tabs and try again. ERR.082 and other sign-in errors are covered in Wealthsimple Tax Auto-fill not working.
  • Some slips missing: the CRA has not processed them yet. Most are available by mid-March, and T3 slips are due as late as March 30.
  • Carryover amounts blank: balances appear only if they are on your CRA file. If last year's return is still being assessed, use the figures from your old return and recheck them once the notice of assessment arrives.

If you then cannot submit, see Wealthsimple Tax not working.

Switching to another product instead

Every certified product relies on Auto-fill and manual entry when you switch brands, so the checklist on this page works the same way in any of them. If you are weighing UFile, its sign-in and CRA connection issues are covered in UFile not working, and its rejection messages in UFile error codes.

Common questions

Can I upload my TurboTax .tax file to Wealthsimple Tax?

No. Wealthsimple says Wealthsimple Tax has no direct integration with other tax software, so it cannot open a TurboTax file. Use Auto-fill and enter the remaining amounts by hand.

Will my RRSP contribution room carry over to Wealthsimple Tax?

Yes, through Auto-fill. Wealthsimple lists the RRSP deduction limit and unused contributions among the items the CRA supplies right away.

Do I lose unused tuition credits if I switch from TurboTax?

No. The unused federal and provincial tuition amounts sit on your CRA file and come in through Auto-fill. Check them against your notice of assessment.

What do I need to type in by hand after switching?

Unused donations, unused student loan interest, closing UCC for each CCA class, unused use-of-home expenses and CNIL figures, plus less common items like AMT carryforwards.

Can I switch from TurboTax to Wealthsimple Tax partway through a return?

Yes, but nothing you entered in TurboTax moves across. You would start the Wealthsimple Tax return fresh with Auto-fill and re-enter everything else.
