How to resubmit a rejected tax return

Here is how to resubmit a rejected tax return: open the return in the same software, read the reject code, correct the one entry it points to, then transmit again from the filing step. The IRS treats a return that was first sent on time as filed on time if the corrected version goes through by the fifth calendar day after the due date.

How to resubmit a rejected tax return: the short answer

Knowing how to resubmit a rejected tax return comes down to three moves: find the reject code, fix the exact field it names, and send the same return again. You do not start a new return, and you do not file an amended return, because the IRS never accepted the first one.

According to IRS Publication 1345, a rejected return counts as not filed. The acknowledgment your software receives carries a business rule, usually shown as a code such as IND-031-04 or R0000-500-01, that tells you what failed. Most rejects come from a single mismatch: a prior-year AGI, a Social Security number, a name, an IP PIN or a missing form.

  1. Open the rejection email or sign in to the software you filed with.
  2. Note the reject code and the plain-language explanation next to it.
  3. Correct the entry, using the source document the code refers to (last year's return, a Social Security card, a W-2, Form 1095-A).
  4. Go back to the filing step and transmit the return again.
  5. Watch for a new acknowledgment; you can check return status once the IRS has had the return for 24 hours.

What an e-file rejection means for your filing

An e-file rejected message is not a penalty notice and not an audit. It means the IRS computers refused to take the submission in, usually within minutes or hours of sending, because something in it failed an automatic check. Nothing was processed, so no refund was started and no balance was recorded.

Two side effects catch people out. First, a state return that was sent together with the federal return is denied when the federal part has no accepted submission, so the state often shows as rejected too even though nothing is wrong with it. Second, the clock keeps running: the return is only filed once a corrected version is accepted, or a paper return is mailed within the grace period described below.

Rejected versus accepted versus processing

E-file statuses you will see in tax software
StatusWhat it meansWhat to do
Transmitted or pendingThe software sent the return and is waiting for an acknowledgmentWait; if it sits for days, see the stuck-transmitting guide
RejectedThe IRS refused the submission; it is not filedFix the reject code and resend
AcceptedThe IRS took the return in for processingNothing to fix; refund questions are separate
State rejected after federal rejectThe linked state return was denied with the federal oneResend the state once the federal is accepted

Find the rejection in your software

Every product keeps the reject code inside your account, even if the email only says your return needs attention. The table below shows where the code and the fix screens sit in the most used programs, based on each vendor's own help pages.

If the code is not shown, look for a link labeled with the word rejection, fix or next steps on the filing status screen. For TurboTax specifics, including the Desktop path and the most frequent codes, see TurboTax rejected return.

How to fix a rejected return: general steps

The fix is always driven by the code, but the same routine works for nearly every reject in consumer software.

  1. Match the code to a document. A name or SSN reject means the Social Security card; an employer ID reject means the W-2; an AGI reject means last year's Form 1040; a premium tax credit reject means Form 1095-A.
  2. Change only what the code names. Retyping unrelated entries risks new mismatches.
  3. Re-run the review. Most programs rerun their error check before you can send again; clear anything it flags.
  4. Revisit the signature screen. If the reject was about prior-year AGI, the self-select PIN or an IP PIN, the correction happens on this screen.
  5. Transmit and save the confirmation. Keep the new submission date and any acknowledgment email.

For signature rejects, the two most common are covered in depth: the AGI mismatch in TurboTax rejected AGI and the general explanation of the prior-year AGI or PIN screen. If the reject says an Identity Protection PIN is missing or wrong, use the IP PIN guide for TurboTax.

Do I have to sign again when I resend?

Pub 1345 lets rejected return data be corrected and sent again without new signatures as long as the change stays small: no more than $50 to total income or AGI, and no more than $14 to total tax, federal withholding, the refund or the amount owed. Bigger changes need a new signature declaration.

In do-it-yourself software, the signature is the five-digit self-select PIN plus last year's AGI or PIN that you enter in the filing steps. Fixing a name typo or a dependent's SSN rarely moves any amount, so you simply retransmit. If your fix changes the refund by, say, $300 because a dependent now qualifies, expect the software to walk you through the signature screen again.

How many days to resubmit a rejected tax return

The IRS gives a short grace period, called the perfection period, for returns that were first sent on or before the due date. It has two parts, one for e-file and one for paper.

Resubmission windows from IRS Publication 1345
RouteDeadline to count as on timeCondition
Resend electronicallyFifth calendar day after the due dateOriginal e-file sent on or before the due date
Mail a paper returnLater of the due date or 10 calendar days after the rejection noticeInclude a short explanation of why it is filed after the due date

Worked example using the 2026 season

The deadline for 2025 returns was Wednesday, April 15, 2026. A return sent on April 14 and rejected on April 15 could be corrected and resent electronically through April 20, 2026 and still count as timely. If the same filer gave up on e-file after a rejection notice dated April 18, a paper return mailed by April 28, 2026 would also count as on time, with a note explaining the late mailing.

For the 2027 season, the IRS has not yet published its filing-season announcement. The statutory due date for most tax year 2026 individual returns is April 15, and the same five-day and ten-day rules apply to that date once the IRS confirms it.

When to mail the return instead

Paper is the right call when the same reject keeps coming back after you have confirmed the data against the source document, or when the software cannot send the return at all. Typical cases:

  • The prior-year AGI is confirmed on an IRS transcript and still rejects after trying zero where the vendor suggests it.
  • A dependent or your own SSN is reported as already used on another accepted return.
  • The return is for a year outside the e-file window. IRS e-file covers returns due in the current year and the two previous years.
  • A TurboTax return for tax year 2024 or earlier: Intuit says fixed prior-year returns must be completed in TurboTax Desktop and mailed.
  • A spouse under 16 who did not file last year, which rules out the self-select PIN signature used by consumer software.

Print the full return from the software, sign it by hand, attach W-2s and any forms that show withholding, and mail it to the address in the Form 1040 instructions for your state. Keep proof of the mailing date if you are inside the 10-day window.

Common questions

How do I resubmit a rejected tax return?

Sign in to the software you used, open the rejection details, correct the entry the reject code names and transmit again from the filing step. You send the same return, not a new or amended one.

How many days do I have to resubmit a rejected tax return?

If the first e-file went out on or before the due date, the corrected return counts as on time when it is resent electronically by the fifth calendar day after the due date. For the April 15, 2026 deadline that meant April 20, 2026.

Do I need to file an amended return if my e-file was rejected?

No. A rejected return was never filed, so there is nothing to amend. Form 1040-X is only for returns the IRS has accepted.

Why was my e-file rejected?

The reject code in your software gives the reason. The common ones are a prior-year AGI or PIN mismatch, a name and SSN that do not match Social Security records, a missing IP PIN, a dependent already claimed, or a missing form such as 1095-A.

Is there a limit on how many times I can resend a rejected return?

The IRS does not publish a set limit in Pub 1345. The practical limit is the deadline: if the same reject repeats after you have checked the source document, switch to a paper return within the 10-day window.

Does a rejected federal return also reject my state return?

A state return sent linked to the federal return is denied when the federal has no accepted submission. Fix and resend the federal first, then send the state again.
