E-File Rejection Fixes

TurboTax stuck on transmitting: check before you send again

Short answer

When TurboTax is stuck on transmitting, the return may already have reached Intuit even though the screen froze. Close nothing in a hurry: check the e-file status first (Tax Home in Online, File then Check E-file status in Desktop) and your email. Only retransmit if the status shows the return was never sent, after updating the program and clearing browser or firewall blocks.

01Desktop status check
File menu, then Check E-file status
02Online status check
Tax Home screen and status emails
03After IRS receipt
Status can be checked within 24 hours (IRS Pub 1345)
04Status after sending
Pending, then accepted or rejected

Do not resend yet: check status first

A frozen progress bar does not tell you whether the return left your computer. TurboTax stuck on transmitting often means the upload finished but the confirmation screen failed to load. Sending again without checking risks a second submission of the same return.

The IRS accepts one original return per taxpayer for a tax year, so a duplicate copy would be rejected and could muddy the record of which submission counts. Checking status takes a few minutes and settles the question.

TurboTax Desktop stuck on transmitting: check e-file status

In TurboTax Desktop, Intuit's instruction is to open the File menu and select Check E-file status. If the program itself is frozen, wait several minutes, then close it through Task Manager on Windows or Force Quit on a Mac, reopen the same tax file and run the status check.

  1. Leave the frozen window alone for at least 10 minutes if the network light or disk is still busy.
  2. Close TurboTax, restart the computer and open the same .tax file.
  3. Select File, then Check E-file status.
  4. Look in your email for a message from Intuit saying the return was sent or received.
  5. Once the IRS has had the return for 24 hours, the IRS refund status tool can confirm receipt.

A solved thread in Intuit's community reported that a 2025 Desktop crash at the Transmitting Returns step, seen after users deleted and re-added Forms 1095-A and 8962, was fixed in a program update. That is a good reason to install updates before retrying; our TurboTax won't update page helps when the update itself stalls.

TurboTax Online stuck on finish and file

In TurboTax Online, sign in again and look at the Tax Home screen. Intuit says the e-file status appears there, and it also sends emails whenever the status changes. If Tax Home shows no status at all, Intuit notes you may have filed from a different account or with a different method.

If the Transmit my return now button does nothing, Intuit's troubleshooting list is short: turn off pop-up blockers, clear cookies, and try a different browser. A session timeout during the final screens can also leave the page spinning, so sign out fully before trying again. Wider outages are covered in TurboTax website not working.

TurboTax e-file not transmitting: firewall and connection blocks

Desktop editions send the return over your internet connection, so anything that inspects traffic can stall the upload. Intuit's general Windows troubleshooting advice includes adding intuit.com to trusted sites and running Windows Update, and it suggests pausing antivirus during installs.

  • Security software or a firewall prompt waiting for approval behind the TurboTax window
  • A VPN or corporate proxy that blocks the upload
  • Public or hotel Wi-Fi with a sign-in page that has timed out
  • An outdated program build that the e-file server no longer accepts
  • Very low disk space, which can stop the program from writing the submission file

Fix one item, then try again, so you know which change worked. Turn security software back on as soon as the return is sent. For crashes that are not tied to filing, see TurboTax Desktop troubleshooting.

Should you resend if transmitting froze

Resend only when the status shows the return was not filed. If it shows pending, wait; acknowledgments can take time, especially on busy days near the deadline. If it came back rejected, the freeze was not the problem; follow our guide to resubmitting a rejected return instead.

If it truly did not send

When status confirms nothing went out, update the program, clear the blocks above and transmit again. If the next attempt stops at a message about your identity, the signature step may be the real issue; see prior-year AGI or PIN. If TurboTax refuses to offer e-file at all, read TurboTax won't let me e-file.

As a last resort, print the return, sign it and mail it. Keep a copy of the unsent electronic file so you can show what you prepared, and do not also e-file the same return later without checking status first.

Step by step

  1. Wait briefly

Give a frozen transmission up to 10 minutes before closing the program.

  2. Check status

Use Tax Home in Online or File then Check E-file status in Desktop, and read your email.

  3. Clear blocks

Update TurboTax, disable pop-up blockers, clear cookies and check firewall or VPN settings.

  4. Retransmit only if unsent

Send again only when the status confirms nothing went out.

Common questions

How do I know if TurboTax sent my return?

Check the e-file status: Tax Home in TurboTax Online, or File then Check E-file status in Desktop. Intuit also emails you when the status changes.

Should I resend if TurboTax froze while transmitting?

Not until the status shows the return was never sent. If it shows pending or accepted, a second send would be a duplicate.

How long does TurboTax stay on transmitting?

The send itself normally finishes quickly. If the screen has not moved after 10 minutes, close the program and check e-file status rather than waiting longer.

Why does Transmit Returns Now do nothing in TurboTax?

Intuit points to pop-up blockers, stored cookies and the browser in use. Turn off pop-up blocking, clear cookies or switch browsers, then try again.

Can the IRS confirm it received my e-filed return?

Yes. IRS Pub 1345 says filers can start checking status within 24 hours after the IRS receives an e-filed return.
