TurboTax website not working: loading and browser fixes

Short answer

If the TurboTax website is not working, first check whether it fails on a second device and network; if it does, Intuit's servers are the problem and you should wait. If only your browser fails, update it, clear cookies and cache for intuit.com, turn off extensions and any VPN, then try a second supported browser. Your saved return is not affected.

01Supported browsers (Windows and Mac)

04Effect of clearing cache on your return
None; entries are saved in your Intuit account

Why the TurboTax website is not working: outage or browser

A TurboTax website that is not working almost always falls into one of two groups. Either Intuit's service is slow or down for everyone, or something in your browser is stopping the page's scripts from running. The fixes are completely different, so sort it out first.

Pick up your phone, turn off Wi-Fi so it uses mobile data, and open turbotax.intuit.com. If the site loads and you can sign in there, the service is up and your computer is the problem. If the phone shows the same blank page or error, give it 30 to 60 minutes before changing anything on your computer.

Is your browser supported by TurboTax Online?

Intuit's system requirements page for TurboTax Online lists the minimum browser versions. An out-of-date browser is one of the quietest causes of the TurboTax site not loading, because the page may open but stop halfway with no error message.

TurboTax Online browser minimums (Intuit system requirements)
BrowserMinimum versionWhere
Google Chrome131Windows, Mac, Chromebook
Mozilla Firefox138Windows and Mac
Microsoft Edge136Windows and Mac
Safari16Mac

To see your version in Chrome, open the three-dot menu, then Help, then About Google Chrome; Chrome checks for updates on that page. In Edge the same path is Settings, then About Microsoft Edge. Restart the browser after it updates, or the new version is not actually running.

TurboTax not loading on Chrome or Edge: clear cache and cookies

Intuit's help article on the cache explains that a full or corrupted set of stored files can break TurboTax pages. Clearing only the Intuit site data is enough and keeps you signed in to everything else.

  1. Sign out of TurboTax if you can, then close every TurboTax tab.
  2. In Chrome, open turbotax.intuit.com, select the icon to the left of the address, choose Site settings, then Delete data. Repeat for accounts.intuit.com if you have visited it.
  3. In Edge, open Settings, Cookies and site permissions, Manage and delete cookies and site data, See all cookies and site data, search intuit and remove the entries.
  4. In Firefox, open Settings, Privacy & Security, Cookies and Site Data, Manage Data, search intuit and remove.
  5. In Safari on Mac, open Settings, Privacy, Manage Website Data, search intuit and remove.
  6. Quit the browser completely, reopen it and sign in again.

Your return is not stored in any of these files. TurboTax Online saves entries to your Intuit account, so after you sign back in you continue where you stopped.

TurboTax stuck on loading screen: extensions, VPNs and ad blockers

When TurboTax sits on a loading screen that never finishes, a blocked script is the usual reason. Ad blockers, privacy extensions, password manager add-ons and script blockers can stop the pieces of the page that load your return.

  • Open a private window (Ctrl+Shift+N in Chrome and Edge, Ctrl+Shift+P in Firefox, Shift+Command+N in Safari). Private windows start without most extensions.
  • If TurboTax works there, turn extensions off one at a time in your normal window to find the one causing trouble, then add intuit.com to its allow list.
  • Pause any VPN or proxy. Intuit's security checks can challenge or block sign-ins that come from an unexpected location.
  • Allow pop-ups for intuit.com, since some help panels and document previews open in a new window.
  • On a work computer, company filtering software can block parts of the site; use a personal device.

Try another browser, device or the TurboTax app

Switching browsers is a legitimate fix, not just a workaround. If Chrome fails and Firefox works, you can finish your return in Firefox and deal with Chrome later. The same return appears in any browser once you sign in.

The TurboTax mobile app is another route to the same return. Some people find photo import of a W-2 easier on the phone and the review steps easier on a larger screen. Either way, it is one return in one account.

If the page loads but you cannot get past the sign-in step, the problem is your account, not the website. Read why TurboTax won't let you log in, or the guide for a TurboTax password reset that is not working.

If the TurboTax site still will not load

At this point you have tested another device, updated and cleared the browser, and removed extensions and VPNs. Two causes remain: your home network or Intuit itself.

  1. Restart your router and modem, then retest.
  2. If your router or a network filter has a DNS setting such as a family safety filter, test on mobile data to rule it out.
  3. Wait an hour and try again, especially in the final week before April 15.
  4. If one exact screen fails every time on every device, contact Intuit through the help menu with the screen name and time.

For problems that happen after the website loads, such as a screen that repeats or a review step that will not clear, go back to the TurboTax not working overview and pick the matching guide.

Step by step

  1. Test on a second device

Open TurboTax on a phone using mobile data to see whether the site is down for everyone.

  2. Open a private window

Load TurboTax in a private window to rule out extensions and stored data.

  3. Update and clear the browser

Update to a supported version and delete intuit.com cookies and site data.

  4. Remove blockers

Turn off ad blockers and pause any VPN or proxy.

  5. Switch browsers

Sign in with a second supported browser and continue your return.

Common questions

Why won't the TurboTax website load?

Usually an outdated browser, stale cookies for intuit.com, or an extension blocking scripts. Try a private window; if TurboTax works there, clear intuit.com site data and disable extensions in your normal window.

Is the TurboTax website down?

Check it on your phone using mobile data. If it fails there too, it is likely a service problem and waiting is the fix. If the phone works, the problem is on your computer.

Which browser works best with TurboTax?

Any browser on Intuit's supported list works: Chrome 131 or later, Firefox 138 or later, Edge 136 or later, or Safari 16 or later on Mac. Keep it updated and keep JavaScript and cookies on.

Why is TurboTax not loading on Chrome but working in Edge?

Something specific to your Chrome profile, most often an extension or corrupted site data, is interfering. Delete intuit.com site data in Chrome and disable extensions one by one to find the cause.

Can a VPN stop TurboTax from loading?

Yes. VPNs and proxies can trigger extra security checks or block sign-in. Pause the VPN while you use TurboTax.
