TurboTax overtime deduction: where to enter it and why it may be missing

Short answer

The TurboTax overtime deduction is triggered from your W-2 entry, not from a deductions screen. If your W-2 lists overtime in box 14, set that line's Category to Overtime. If it does not, tick Overtime on the Let's check for other situations screen. TurboTax then asks questions, counts only the premium above your regular rate, and fills in Schedule 1-A Part III.

TurboTax overtime deduction: where to enter it

TurboTax handles the overtime deduction inside the W-2 section. Intuit's instructions start from the W-2 rather than from Deductions & Credits, which is why many people look for the TurboTax overtime deduction in the deductions list and cannot find it. Intuit's help article gives two paths, depending on whether your employer printed overtime on the W-2.

Path 1: overtime is listed in box 14

  1. Go to Federal, then Income, then the W-2 topic, and add or edit the W-2 from the employer that paid the overtime.
  2. Check that Box 14 - Description and Box 14 - Amount match your paper W-2 exactly. Imported W-2s sometimes leave box 14 empty.
  3. On the Review your box 14 information screen, find the overtime line and set Category to Overtime from the dropdown.
  4. Continue and answer the overtime questions that follow.

Path 2: overtime is not on the W-2

  1. Finish entering the W-2 as printed.
  2. On the Let's check for other situations screen, tick the box next to Overtime.
  3. Answer the questions; Intuit says they are there to help you find and enter the right amount, often from your final pay stub or an employer statement.

What overtime amount do I enter? The premium, not the total

This is the most common mistake. The deduction applies only to qualified overtime compensation, which the IRS defines as the part of overtime pay above your regular rate that the Fair Labor Standards Act requires. For time-and-a-half, that is the half, not the full overtime pay.

Worked examples: what counts toward the deduction
SituationTotal overtime payQualified premium
$28 regular rate, 150 hours at time-and-a-half ($42)$6,300$2,100 (150 x $14)
$28 regular rate, 20 hours at double time ($56)$1,120$280 (20 x $14, the FLSA half only)
Salaried employee not eligible for FLSA overtime, paid extra for long weeksAny amount$0

A quick check for time-and-a-half: the premium is one-third of total overtime pay, because the extra half is one of the three halves in 1.5 times the rate. If your box 14 line shows $6,300 labeled OT, that is most likely the full overtime pay. Tell TurboTax exactly what the W-2 shows, and let the follow-up questions narrow it to the premium.

Why the TurboTax overtime deduction is not working

When people report the TurboTax overtime deduction not working, the software is usually doing what the entries tell it. Check these in order before assuming a bug.

  • The box 14 Category is blank or set to Other. TurboTax does not recognize text like OT or OVTM unless you pick Overtime.
  • The overtime line is missing because the W-2 was imported. Add it by hand.
  • You never reached the Let's check for other situations screen. Edit the W-2 and click Continue through every screen.
  • Your answers said you are exempt from FLSA overtime, which makes the amount $0.
  • You are married filing separately. The IRS requires a joint return for this deduction.
  • Your modified adjusted gross income is above the level where the deduction starts to phase out.

If the W-2 screens will not load or keep sending you back, that is a separate software issue; the TurboTax website not working guide covers loading problems, and the TurboTax not working overview sorts other symptoms.

Does TurboTax calculate the overtime deduction? Checking Schedule 1-A

Yes. After your answers, TurboTax works out whether the overtime qualifies and calculates the deduction on Schedule 1-A Part III. The Schedule 1-A total goes to Form 1040 line 13b for tax year 2025, whether you itemize or take the standard deduction.

  1. In TurboTax Online, open Tax Tools, then Tools, then View Tax Summary, and choose Preview my 1040. Look for your Schedule 1-A total on line 13b.
  2. To see Part III itself, use Print Center and preview this year's return. Intuit may ask you to register or pay first.
  3. Compare the Part III amount with the premium you worked out. In the first example above, it should be $2,100, not $6,300.
  4. If both you and your spouse earned overtime on a joint return, check that each W-2 was entered with its own overtime line.

What your 2026 W-2 will show for the 2027 season

Employers did not have to separate qualified overtime on 2025 W-2s; some used box 14, some sent a separate statement, and some reported nothing extra. That inconsistency is the main reason TurboTax asks so many questions for 2025.

For 2026 wages, the IRS's W-2 instructions add box 12 code TT for the total amount of qualified overtime compensation. Because code TT is the qualified amount, there should be less guesswork. The layout of the tax year 2026 TurboTax screens is not yet announced; Intuit usually releases new editions in late fall. When your W-2 arrives in early 2027, look for code TT in box 12 and enter it exactly.

Tipped workers who also earn overtime claim both on the same schedule; the no tax on tips in TurboTax guide covers the tips part. Workers 65 or older can also check the TurboTax senior deduction page.

Common questions

Where is the overtime deduction in TurboTax?

It is part of the W-2 entry under Income. Set the box 14 overtime line's Category to Overtime, or tick Overtime on the Let's check for other situations screen if the W-2 does not list it.

Why is TurboTax not giving me the overtime deduction?

Usually the box 14 Category was not set to Overtime, the other situations screen was skipped, you file married filing separately, or your answers show you are not eligible for FLSA overtime.

Do I enter my total overtime pay or just the extra half?

Only the premium above your regular rate counts. For time-and-a-half, that is one-third of total overtime pay; TurboTax's follow-up questions help narrow it down.

Does double time count for the TurboTax overtime deduction?

Only the half that the FLSA requires counts. If you earn double time, the extra half beyond time-and-a-half is not qualified overtime.

My employer gave me a separate overtime statement. Where does it go in TurboTax?

Enter the W-2 as printed, then tick Overtime on the Let's check for other situations screen and use the statement to answer the questions that follow.
