TurboTax Desktop not working: find the fix for your symptom

When TurboTax Desktop is not working, the cause usually sits in one of four places: the computer no longer meets the 2025 edition's requirements (Windows 11 64-bit or macOS Sonoma 14), an install or update did not finish, security software or folder permissions are blocking the program, or another copy is already running. Find your symptom below and go straight to the matching fix.

Match your symptom to a fix

TurboTax Desktop not working can mean a dozen different things, and each one has a different fix. Start by naming exactly what you see: an installer that stops, an icon that does nothing, an update bar that sits still, or a window that closes on its own. The table below points each symptom to its most likely cause and to the page that walks through the repair.

If your symptom is not in the table, work through the sections below in order. They run from the cheapest checks (requirements, restart, administrator rights) to the heavier ones (a clean reinstall). Most people are running again before they reach the reinstall step.

TurboTax Desktop troubleshooting starts with the system requirements

The single biggest change for the 2025 edition is the operating system. Intuit's requirements page says TurboTax Desktop 2025 for Windows needs Windows 11 (64-bit) and an account with administrative rights. On a Mac, it needs macOS Sonoma 14 or later. A PC still on Windows 10 cannot run this edition at all, no matter how many times you reinstall.

For how to confirm your own Windows version and 64-bit status, see TurboTax and the Windows 11 requirement. If your PC is stuck on Windows 10, the choices are laid out in TurboTax on Windows 10: your options.

Install and update problems

Install and update failures share most of their causes: a download that was corrupted on the way in, antivirus software quarantining part of the program, a missing or damaged Microsoft .NET 4.8 component, or a user account without administrator rights. Intuit's own Windows checklist covers all four.

  • Installer freezes, loops or never finishes: delete the downloaded file and get a fresh copy from Intuit's install page, then retry. The full walkthrough is on TurboTax installation problems.
  • Update sits at 0% or 100%: Intuit says not to end the process and to wait up to 15 minutes. If it still fails, a manual update file is available. See TurboTax won't update.
  • Fatal error during install or update: this is usually error 1603, which points to the .NET Framework installer rather than TurboTax itself.
  • Computer keeps asking to restart: Intuit's fix is to uninstall TurboTax, uninstall the Microsoft Visual C++ programs, then reinstall TurboTax.

Program will not open, freezes or crashes

If the program is installed but does nothing when you double-click it, a second copy may already be open in the background or under another Windows user. That second case produces error 70001. The step-by-step fixes for a silent launch are on TurboTax won't open.

TurboTax Desktop frozen on a screen

A freeze on one interview screen is different from a crash. Give it a minute, especially while it is calculating or saving. If it stays frozen, close it from Task Manager, reopen it and check that your last entries saved. Repeated freezes on the same screen are worth reporting to Intuit with the form name.

The window closes or crashes without warning

Random crashes usually trace back to outdated Windows components, graphics drivers or a damaged install. Run Windows Update, update your drivers, then install the latest TurboTax update. The longer list of crash causes is on TurboTax keeps crashing.

How to repair TurboTax Desktop without losing your return

Your return lives in a separate data file, not inside the program. By default TurboTax saves it in the Documents\TurboTax folder, and the 2025 file ends in .tax2025. Removing the program does not remove that folder, but copy the file somewhere safe before any repair anyway.

  1. Open File Explorer, go to Documents\TurboTax and copy your .tax2025 file to a USB drive or cloud folder.
  2. Restart the computer so no TurboTax process is left running.
  3. Run Windows Update and install everything it offers, then restart again.
  4. Right-click the TurboTax icon, choose Properties, open the Compatibility tab and tick Run this program as an administrator.
  5. If it still fails, uninstall TurboTax from Settings, Apps, then download a fresh installer from Intuit and reinstall.
  6. Open the new install, sign in, and open your saved .tax2025 file from File, Open Tax Return.

Intuit also lists the Windows System File Checker, adding https://*.intuit.com to Trusted Sites, and a Selective Startup restart as next steps when the basics fail.

Mac-specific TurboTax Desktop issues

On a Mac, the most common blocker is the operating system version. The 2025 edition needs macOS Sonoma 14 or later, so an older Mac that cannot move past Ventura or earlier will not run it. The next most common cause is macOS security prompts that stop the app from opening the first time.

Mac fixes differ from the Windows steps above: there is no Task Manager, no .NET component and no Visual C++ package. Use the dedicated guide, TurboTax won't open on Mac, instead of the Windows checklist.

Does TurboTax Desktop still work on Windows 10?

Not the 2025 edition. Intuit states that TurboTax Desktop 2025 cannot be used on Windows 10, and it gives two options: upgrade the computer to Windows 11 or switch to TurboTax Online. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, which is the backdrop for the change.

TurboTax Online runs in a web browser, so the requirement for Windows 11 does not apply to it. Your answers and forms are stored in your Intuit account rather than in a local file.

When to switch to TurboTax Online

Switching makes sense when the computer itself is the problem: it cannot run Windows 11 or macOS 14, the hard drive is failing, or repeated reinstalls have not worked. It also helps if you need to finish on a different machine. Staying on Desktop makes sense when your PC meets the requirements and only the install is damaged, because a clean reinstall usually fixes that.

If you are planning ahead for next season, the new edition's release timing is covered on when TurboTax comes out. The tax year 2026 release date is not yet announced; new editions usually appear in late fall, and some forms are not final until January or later.

Common questions

Why is my TurboTax Desktop not working?

The most common reasons are an unsupported operating system (the 2025 edition needs Windows 11 64-bit or macOS Sonoma 14), an update or install that did not finish, antivirus software blocking the program, or a copy already running under another user. Check the requirements first, then restart and run it as administrator.

How do I repair TurboTax Desktop?

Back up your .tax2025 file from Documents\TurboTax, run Windows Update, then uninstall TurboTax and reinstall it from a freshly downloaded installer. If the computer keeps asking to restart, Intuit says to also uninstall the Microsoft Visual C++ programs before reinstalling.

Does TurboTax Desktop still work on Windows 10?

TurboTax Desktop 2025 does not. Intuit says the 2025 edition runs only on Windows 11 (64-bit) and suggests upgrading to Windows 11 or using TurboTax Online instead.

Is TurboTax Desktop down, or is the problem my computer?

The Desktop program runs on your own computer, so a program that will not open or install is almost always a local problem. Activation, updates and e-filing do connect to Intuit, so failures at those steps can also come from a network block or an outage.

What are the system requirements for TurboTax Desktop 2026?

They are not yet announced. Intuit usually updates its requirements page in the fall before the new edition ships, so check that page before buying for the 2027 season.
