TurboTax Desktop Problems

When will TurboTax be updated with the form you need?

Short answer

When will TurboTax be updated with a missing form? Look it up on Intuit's forms availability tool, which lists a print date and an e-file date for each IRS and state form, by product. Intuit says it needs a few days after the IRS or a state releases a form before it works in TurboTax. Online gets the change on Intuit's side; Desktop needs a downloaded update.

When will TurboTax be updated: the short version

TurboTax is updated in waves, not all at once. The core Form 1040 screens usually work early in the season, while forms tied to new law, less common schedules and many state forms arrive in later updates. So the honest answer to when will TurboTax be updated is: it depends on the form, and Intuit publishes a date for each one.

Intuit's help article on forms availability says it takes some time to build IRS forms into TurboTax, and that even after the IRS releases a form, Intuit needs a few days before it can be used in the program. The same applies to state forms after a state releases them.

Why forms arrive after the software

The program itself goes on sale before the IRS has finished the year's forms. Draft forms and instructions can change late in the year, and TurboTax cannot finalize a screen that feeds a form until the form is final.

  • New law. A form created by recent legislation has no earlier version to build from. For tax year 2025, the deductions for tips, overtime, car loan interest and the enhanced senior deduction went on the new Schedule 1-A.
  • Late IRS releases. Some forms and worksheets are finalized in January or later.
  • State schedules. Each state sets its own calendar, and Intuit adds a state form only after that state releases it.
  • E-file testing. A form can be ready to print before it is approved for electronic filing, which is why two dates are listed.

When will TurboTax update for overtime and other new deductions?

For the tax year 2026 edition, Intuit has not published form dates yet, including for Schedule 1-A. The lookup is normally filled in over the late fall and winter. Once your edition is installed, the entry screens are explained on TurboTax overtime deduction and no tax on tips in TurboTax.

TurboTax forms availability: how to check a form's status

Intuit runs a lookup that lists IRS forms and state forms separately and splits them by product: TurboTax Online (including the iOS and Android apps), TurboTax for Windows and TurboTax for Mac. Pick the product you actually use, because the lists are kept per product.

  1. Search for Intuit's help article "When will my individual tax forms be available in TurboTax?" and open the lookup from it.
  2. Choose IRS forms or state forms, then your product.
  3. Find the form by number, such as Schedule 1-A, Form 8962 or your state's resident return.
  4. Read both dates: the print date and the e-file date.
  5. If the e-file column says unsupported, plan to print that form and mail your return.
How to read a forms availability entry
What the entry showsWhat it means for you
A print date in the pastThe form is in the software and can be completed and printed
An e-file date in the pastA return that includes the form can be transmitted
A future dateIntuit's expected date; the form is not ready yet
E-file listed as unsupportedThe form cannot be e-filed in TurboTax; print it and mail the return

A date in the future is a target, not a promise. Check the lookup again close to the date rather than relying on one you wrote down weeks earlier.

Do TurboTax Online and Desktop update at the same time?

They get the same forms, but they receive them differently. TurboTax Online runs on Intuit's servers, so a finished form simply shows up the next time you sign in. TurboTax Desktop has to download the change: you get it by running Check for Updates, or when the program prompts you to update.

This is the most common reason one family member's Online return shows a form as ready while another's Desktop copy does not. If Desktop keeps saying a form is unavailable after its listed date, the update probably has not installed. Work through TurboTax won't update; if the program freezes during the update instead, see TurboTax keeps crashing.

When will TurboTax be fully updated?

There is no single "fully updated" day. Many forms are ready by the time the IRS opens e-file, but some federal forms and state forms come later. In practice, a return is ready when every form it uses shows past print and e-file dates in the lookup.

What to do while you wait for a form

A missing form rarely means you have to stop. Enter everything else, then come back when the update lands.

  1. Enter W-2s, 1099s and other income that do not depend on the missing form.
  2. Note the form's print and e-file dates from the lookup on your document folder.
  3. When the date passes, open TurboTax (Desktop users: run Check for Updates first).
  4. Run the review again. Screens flagged while the form was unfinished often clear after the update; if one does not, see TurboTax needs review.
  5. Transmit only when every form on your return shows as e-file ready.

If the program will not start at all after an update, that is a different problem; TurboTax won't open covers it. For the full list of Desktop symptoms, use the TurboTax Desktop troubleshooting hub.

Common questions

Why can't I file yet when TurboTax says a form is not ready?

Your return includes a form Intuit has not finished for e-file. Check the form's e-file date in Intuit's forms availability lookup, finish the rest of the return, and transmit after that date.

How do I check TurboTax forms availability?

Open Intuit's help article on when individual tax forms will be available, go to the lookup, pick IRS or state forms and your product (Online, Windows or Mac), and search for the form number.

What does unsupported mean on the TurboTax forms availability list?

It means the form cannot be e-filed through TurboTax. Complete it, print it and mail the return that includes it.

Why does my Desktop copy show a form as unavailable when the date has passed?

The update that adds the form has probably not downloaded. Choose Check for Updates, let it finish, and reopen your return.

Are TurboTax form dates for tax year 2026 out yet?

Not as of September 18, 2026. Intuit fills in the lists for a new tax year over the late fall and winter as the IRS and states release forms.
