TurboTax keeps crashing or freezing: what to fix, in order
Short answer
If TurboTax keeps crashing, first copy your .tax2025 file somewhere safe. Then install Windows updates, update graphics and other hardware drivers, run the System File Checker and let any TurboTax update finish (Intuit says to wait up to 15 minutes even when Windows says Not Responding). If it only crashes on one form, delete and re-enter that form. Reinstall last.

Why TurboTax keeps crashing: common triggers
When TurboTax keeps crashing, the pattern of the crash tells you more than any error message. A program that dies at random has a different cause from one that freezes every time you open the same screen. Note when it happens before you start fixing.
| What you see | Likely cause | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Freezes with Not Responding during an update | Update still running in the background | Wait up to 15 minutes |
| Crashes at random on any screen | Outdated Windows, drivers or damaged system files | Windows Update, drivers, System File Checker |
| Crashes on one form or screen every time | A damaged entry in the return | Delete and re-enter that form |
| Crashes only when saving or printing | Folder permissions, security software or printer driver | Run as administrator; check antivirus |
| Crashes right after the splash screen | Launch failure, not a crash | See TurboTax won't open |
Hardware limits play a part too. Intuit recommends at least 4 GB of RAM for TurboTax Desktop 2025 on Windows 11 (64-bit). With a browser, email and a PDF viewer open on a 4 GB machine, TurboTax can stall while it recalculates a large return.
Save and back up your .tax file first
Before you repair or reinstall anything, protect the return. Your work lives in the .tax2025 file, not in the program, so uninstalling TurboTax does not delete it. What can hurt it is a crash in the middle of a save.
- Close TurboTax. If it is frozen, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select TurboTax on the Processes tab and choose End task, unless an update is running (see the next section).
- Open File Explorer and go to Documents, then the TurboTax folder.
- Copy the .tax2025 file to a USB drive or a cloud folder. Add the date to the copy's name.
- Keep that copy untouched while you troubleshoot.
Does a crash corrupt my tax file?
Usually not. A crash while you are typing loses only the entries since your last save. The risk is a crash during the save itself. If the file will not open afterward, go back to your dated copy. The TurboTax tax file page explains the file types and where each one lives.
TurboTax not responding during an update: wait before you force it
A TurboTax desktop frozen at 0% or 100% of an update is often still working. Intuit's troubleshooting guidance is not to end the download even if Task Manager says TurboTax is not responding, and to wait up to 15 minutes. Killing it early can leave a half-installed update, which then causes crashes on every launch.
If 15 minutes pass with no change, restart the computer and run the update again. When updates keep failing, the steps on TurboTax won't update include a manual update file.
Repair Windows, .NET and drivers
TurboTax Desktop depends on Microsoft .NET 4.8 and the Visual C++ 2022 Redistributable. If either is damaged, the program can close without warning. Intuit's Windows troubleshooting list covers the repairs below; do them in this order and test TurboTax after each.
- Run Windows Update. Install everything offered, including optional driver updates, and restart.
- Update hardware drivers, especially the graphics driver, which handles every screen TurboTax draws.
- Run the System File Checker. Open Command Prompt as administrator, type sfc /scannow and press Enter. Restart when it finishes.
- Update your security software, then temporarily turn off antivirus and test. If the crashes stop, add TurboTax to the allowed apps list in Windows Security and turn protection back on.
- Set TurboTax to run as administrator from the shortcut's Properties, Compatibility tab.
Test in Selective Startup
If TurboTax desktop keeps crashing after those repairs, another program may be interfering. Intuit lists restarting in Selective Startup mode. Press Windows+R, type msconfig, choose Selective startup and untick Load startup items, then restart and try TurboTax. If it runs cleanly, turn startup items back on in small groups to find the one that clashes. Return to Normal startup when you are done.
Crashes on one form only
When the crash happens on the same screen every time, the program is usually fine and one entry is not. A W-2 or 1099 that was imported with an odd character, or a form started and abandoned, can trip the calculation.
- Open your working return, not the dated backup copy.
- Switch to Forms mode and find the form that was open when it crashed.
- Delete that form, save, close TurboTax and reopen the return.
- Re-enter the form by hand in the interview rather than importing it again.
- If the crash moves to another form, note which one; that points to a shared entry such as a dependent or state allocation.
A crash on the state section can also mean the state program is incomplete. Run Check for Updates so the state download finishes before you retry.
If crashes continue
Reinstalling is the last step, not the first, because most crashes clear with the repairs above. Use the checklist before you reinstall so nothing is lost.
Uninstall TurboTax from Settings, Apps, restart, then install a fresh download from Intuit. If the installer itself fails, see TurboTax installation problems. If the program still crashes on a clean install, try the return on another computer, or move it to TurboTax Online; the TurboTax Desktop troubleshooting hub sets out that choice.
On a Mac, the crash causes and fixes differ; see TurboTax won't open on Mac. If the program opens but you cannot click anything, that is a display or input issue covered on TurboTax mouse not working.
Step by step
Back up the return
Copy your .tax2025 file from Documents\TurboTax to another drive.
Let updates finish
If frozen during an update, wait up to 15 minutes before ending it.
Update Windows and drivers
Install all Windows updates and the latest graphics driver, then restart.
Repair system files
Run sfc /scannow from an administrator Command Prompt.
Test for conflicts
Pause antivirus and try Selective Startup to find interfering programs.
Isolate a bad form
In Forms mode delete the form that crashes and re-enter it.
Reinstall
Uninstall, restart and install a fresh copy from Intuit.
Common questions
Why does TurboTax keep crashing?
The usual causes are an unfinished update, missing Windows updates or drivers, damaged system files, security software blocking TurboTax, or one bad entry in the return. If it crashes on the same screen every time, suspect the entry.
How do I unfreeze TurboTax Desktop?
If an update is running, wait up to 15 minutes, as Intuit advises. Otherwise press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, end the TurboTax task, restart the computer and reopen your return.
Will I lose my return if TurboTax crashes?
You lose only what you entered since the last save. The .tax2025 file stays in Documents\TurboTax, and reinstalling the program does not delete it.
Why does TurboTax freeze when I open the File tab?
Intuit community users report this freeze, often at the end of the state section. Give it a few minutes; if it never finishes, run Windows Update, update drivers and check the return for a damaged form.
Should I reinstall TurboTax if it keeps freezing?
Only after Windows updates, drivers, System File Checker and an antivirus test. Back up your .tax2025 file before you uninstall.
