TurboTax won't open: how to get the desktop program running
Short answer
If TurboTax won't open, the usual culprit is a copy that is already running, either hidden in the background or under another Windows user (error 70001). Close it in Task Manager or restart fully, then launch TurboTax as administrator. If it stopped opening after an update or never launched after install, reinstall it; your .tax2025 return file stays in Documents\TurboTax.

Why TurboTax won't open: quick checks first
When TurboTax won't open, Windows usually is not showing you the real reason. You click the icon, the cursor spins for a second, and nothing appears. Four quick checks clear up most cases before you touch the installer.
Is TurboTax already running in the background?
A previous session that did not close properly can keep a TurboTax process alive with no window. Windows then refuses to start a second one. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, look on the Processes tab for anything named TurboTax, select it and choose End task. Then try the icon again.
Is another Windows user signed in with TurboTax open?
If a family member left TurboTax open under their own Windows login, you will see error 70001. Intuit's fix is to switch to that user and close the program, or to shut the computer down completely and start it again. A full shutdown matters here: signing out of your own account is not enough. The details are on the TurboTax error 70001 page.
Is Windows up to date?
TurboTax Desktop leans on Microsoft .NET 4.8 and the Visual C++ 2022 Redistributable. If Windows has pending updates or a half-installed component, the program can fail to start. Open Settings, Windows Update, install everything listed, and restart even if Windows does not ask you to.
Run TurboTax Desktop as administrator
Intuit's requirements call for an account with administrative rights, and a TurboTax desktop that won't open is often a permissions problem in disguise. Setting it to always run as administrator gives it write access to its own folders.
- Right-click the TurboTax shortcut on your desktop and choose Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Tick Run this program as an administrator.
- Select Apply, then OK, and launch TurboTax from the same shortcut.
If Windows asks for an administrator password you do not have, the Windows account you are using is a standard account. Sign in with the administrator account instead, or ask whoever manages the PC to run it once.
Check folder write permissions
Intuit also describes a permissions fix for installer errors. Open the TurboTax program folder under C:\Program Files\TurboTax, right-click each subfolder, open Properties, Security, Edit, select your user name and make sure Write is set to Allow, not Deny. Relaunch TurboTax when every subfolder is done.
TurboTax won't open after update
A program that opened fine yesterday and stopped after an update usually has a partly applied update. The updater may have been interrupted by a restart, a sleep timer or antivirus software removing a file mid-install.
- Restart the computer so any stuck updater process ends.
- Temporarily turn off your antivirus, then try to open TurboTax and let it finish updating.
- If it still will not start, install the manual update file Intuit publishes for your edition, as described on TurboTax won't update.
- Turn your antivirus back on and add TurboTax to the allowed apps list in Windows Security.
TurboTax won't launch after install
If the install reported success but the first launch fails, the installer probably did not place every component. This is common when .NET 4.8 had to be added during setup, since that alone can need up to 4.5 GB of disk space according to Intuit. Free up space, restart, and run the installer again so it can repair itself.
If the launch fails with a message about the operating system, the computer does not meet the requirements. The fixes for installer freezes and loops are on TurboTax installation problems.
Reinstall without losing your .tax file
Reinstalling the program does not touch your return, because TurboTax keeps your data in a separate file. Intuit says the default location is the Documents\TurboTax folder, and this year's files end in .tax2025. Make a copy anyway, because a reinstall is also a good moment to have a backup.
- Search the Start menu for *.tax2025 and note where your file is.
- Copy that file to a USB drive or a cloud folder.
- Uninstall TurboTax from Settings, Apps, Installed apps.
- Restart the computer.
- Download a fresh installer from Intuit, install it, sign in and open your copied .tax2025 file.
If reinstalling leads to a loop of restart prompts, Intuit's fix is to uninstall TurboTax, then uninstall the Microsoft Visual C++ programs, then reinstall TurboTax, which puts back the Visual C++ version it needs.
TurboTax not opening because the PC no longer meets requirements
TurboTax Desktop 2025 for Windows requires Windows 11 in its 64-bit form. On Windows 10 it will not run, and Intuit's suggested paths are an upgrade to Windows 11 or a move to TurboTax Online. If this is your situation, no amount of reinstalling will help; start with the TurboTax Desktop troubleshooting hub for the options.
If TurboTax opens but then closes a few seconds later, that is a crash rather than a launch failure. The causes differ, and they are covered on TurboTax keeps crashing.

Common questions
Why won't TurboTax open on my computer?
Usually because a copy is already running in the background or under another Windows user, which shows as error 70001. Other causes are missing administrator rights, pending Windows updates, an interrupted TurboTax update, or a PC that does not meet the Windows 11 64-bit requirement.
What do I do if TurboTax won't open after an update?
Restart the computer, temporarily disable antivirus, and open TurboTax so it can finish the update. If it still will not start, download and run Intuit's manual update file for your edition, or reinstall the program.
Will I lose my return if I reinstall TurboTax?
No. Your return is stored in a separate .tax2025 file, by default in Documents\TurboTax, and uninstalling the program does not delete it. Copy the file to a USB drive or cloud folder before reinstalling to be safe.
How do I close TurboTax running in the background?
Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, find the TurboTax entry on the Processes tab, select it and choose End task. If it belongs to another Windows user, sign in as that user or fully shut down and restart.
Why does TurboTax say it is already running when it is not?
Another Windows user on the same computer probably has it open, which triggers error 70001. Switch to that user and close TurboTax, or shut the computer down completely and start again.
