TurboTax not working: find your problem and the fix
When TurboTax is not working, the cause is usually on your side: an outdated browser, a stale cache, an extension that blocks scripts, or a sign-in session that expired. Open TurboTax in a private window first. If it works there, clear intuit.com cookies. If it fails on every device and network, the problem is on Intuit's end and waiting is the fix.

Why TurboTax is not working: your device or Intuit's servers
The first job is to decide whether TurboTax is not working for everyone or only for you. That single answer tells you whether to start fixing things or to wait. Most reports of TurboTax not working today turn out to be local: one browser, one device or one network.
Run this two-minute test. Open TurboTax in a private window on the same computer, then try your phone on mobile data with Wi-Fi turned off. If both fail at the same screen, the fault is almost certainly on Intuit's side. If the phone works and the computer does not, the fault is in that computer's browser.
| Private window | Phone on mobile data | Most likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Works | Works | Cached files or an extension in your normal browser | Clear intuit.com cookies and cache, disable extensions |
| Fails | Works | Browser version, security software or home network | Update or switch browser, pause VPN, try another network |
| Fails | Fails | Intuit outage or maintenance | Wait 30 to 60 minutes, then retry |
| Works | Fails | Old app version on the phone | Update the TurboTax app from the app store |
Browser and app fixes that solve most TurboTax problems
Intuit lists supported browsers for TurboTax Online on its system requirements page. On Windows and Mac, those are Chrome 131 or later, Firefox 138 or later, Edge 136 or later, and Safari 16 or later on Mac. JavaScript and cookies must be switched on, and Intuit recommends a high-speed connection and a screen of at least 1024x768.
Clearing your cache is safe for your return. TurboTax Online stores your entries in your Intuit account on Intuit's servers, so clearing browser data signs you out but does not remove what you already saved. Intuit's help article on clearing the cache notes that a full or corrupted cache can stop pages from working properly.
For blank pages, spinning wheels and buttons that do nothing, the dedicated guide to the TurboTax website not working walks through each browser step in order, including ad blockers, VPNs and pop-up blockers.
If the TurboTax mobile app stopped working
Update the app first, then force-close it and reopen it. If it still fails, sign in on a computer browser instead. Your return is the same in both places because it lives in your account, so switching devices loses nothing.
Sign-in and account problems
A large share of TurboTax problems start at the sign-in page. The usual blockers are a verification code that never arrives, a lockout after too many attempts, or signing in to a different Intuit account from the one that holds your return.
- Code not arriving or account locked: see why TurboTax won't let you log in.
- Reset email or text never comes: see TurboTax password reset not working.
- Signed out every few minutes: see TurboTax keeps logging me out.
If you signed in successfully but your return is missing, you are probably in the wrong account. Sign out and try every email address and user ID you might have used in past years.
TurboTax problems inside the return: loops, review flags and dead ends
Some problems only show up after you are in. The page loads, but TurboTax keeps sending you back to the same question, refuses to leave the review step, or keeps a form you no longer need. These are data problems, not browser problems, and clearing the cache will not help.
- Same screen over and over, including the Review your order payment step: TurboTax stuck in a loop.
- Review flags an entry you cannot find or fix: the needs-review guide covers each common flag.
- Return is too tangled to repair: TurboTax Online offers Clear & Start Over under Tax Tools, but only before you pay or register.
A quick way to remove a stray form is Intuit's own tool. In the left menu, select Tax Tools, then Tools, then Delete a form in the Tool Center. Intuit warns against deleting forms you actually need, because removing a valid form can create new errors.
New deduction screens for the 2025 to 2028 rules
Tax year 2025 was the first year of four new federal deductions: tips, overtime, car loan interest and the enhanced deduction for people 65 and older. The IRS added Schedule 1-A to claim them, and the total flows to Form 1040 line 13b. You can claim them whether you itemize or take the standard deduction.
Many people who say TurboTax is not working in this part of the return have not triggered the right question. TurboTax asks about tips and overtime after you finish a W-2, based on what you entered in box 7 and box 14, or on the Let's check for other situations screen.
- Tips from a W-2 or 1099: where to enter no tax on tips in TurboTax.
- Overtime premium pay: the TurboTax overtime deduction.
- Age 65 and older: the senior deduction guide in this section.
When to stop troubleshooting and contact Intuit
Contact Intuit through the help menu inside TurboTax when you have tried two browsers and two devices, you are signed in to the correct account, and the problem still happens at the same step. At that point the fault is almost certainly in your account or in Intuit's systems, and only Intuit can see it.
Before you reach out, note the exact screen name, any error text, the time, your browser and version, and what you already tried. That saves a round of basic questions. Use only the help links inside TurboTax or on intuit.com; never call a support number from a search ad or a third-party site.
Common questions
Is TurboTax down right now?
Test it yourself: open TurboTax in a private window, then on a phone using mobile data. If both fail at the same point, it is likely an Intuit-side outage and waiting 30 to 60 minutes is the fix. If only one device fails, the problem is local to that device.
Why is TurboTax not working on my computer but working on my phone?
Your computer's browser is the cause. Update it to a supported version, clear cookies and cache for intuit.com, and turn off extensions and any VPN. If that fails, use a different supported browser.
Will I lose my return if I clear my browser cache?
No. TurboTax Online saves your entries to your Intuit account, not to the browser. Clearing the cache signs you out, and your return is there when you sign back in.
Why did TurboTax stop working in the middle of my return?
A session timeout, a lost connection or an expired sign-in are the usual reasons. Sign out, close all browser windows, sign back in and continue; TurboTax returns you to where you left off.
What browsers does TurboTax Online support?
Intuit lists Chrome 131 or later, Firefox 138 or later, Edge 136 or later, and Safari 16 or later on Mac. JavaScript and cookies must be enabled.
Does a TurboTax problem give me more time to file?
No. Software trouble does not extend the IRS deadline. File Form 4868 by the due date if you need more time to file, and remember an extension does not extend the time to pay.
