TurboTax keeps logging me out: timeouts, cookies and tabs
Short answer
If TurboTax keeps logging you out, first decide whether it happens after you step away or while you are actively typing. Sign-outs after a pause are a normal session timeout. Sign-outs mid-task usually come from blocked or cleared cookies, a privacy extension, a VPN, or the return open in several tabs or devices. TurboTax Online saves your entries as you go, so little work is lost.
- 01Signed out after a pause
- Normal inactivity timeout
- 02Signed out while typing
- Usually cookies, extensions, tabs or VPN
- 03Is work lost
- Online saves as you go, per Intuit
- 04Locked after sign-in attempts
- Wait about 15 minutes
Why TurboTax keeps logging me out
When TurboTax keeps logging you out, the timing tells you the cause. Being signed out after you leave the screen for a while is a security timeout, the same kind banks use, and nothing is broken. Being signed out while you are clicking Continue, or seconds after signing in, points to something on your device that stops the site from keeping your session.
TurboTax Online keeps your session alive with browser cookies. Anything that blocks, deletes or confuses those cookies makes the site think you are a new visitor, and it sends you back to sign in.
TurboTax session timeout versus a forced sign-out
Intuit does not publish the exact number of idle minutes before a TurboTax session timeout, so do not rely on a fixed figure. What you can rely on is the pattern below.
| What happens | Most likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Signed out after a coffee break | Idle timeout | Sign back in; click something every few minutes during long reading |
| Signed out right after signing in | Cookies blocked or cleared | Allow cookies for intuit.com, then retry |
| Signed out when opening a second tab | Two sessions competing | Use one tab and one device |
| Signed out at random, on one network only | VPN or network changing your address | Pause the VPN or try another network |
| Sent back to sign-in repeatedly without a password prompt | Redirect loop | See our loop guide |
A sign-in lock is different again. After too many wrong passwords, Intuit makes you wait about 15 minutes. That is covered in TurboTax password reset not working.
Multiple tabs and devices
Opening the same return in two browser tabs, or on a phone and a laptop at once, creates two sessions for one account. One of them can end the other, and the screen you were on stops responding or drops you at the sign-in page.
- Close every TurboTax tab except one before you continue.
- Sign out of the TurboTax mobile app if you are working on a computer.
- Do not follow an emailed TurboTax link into a new tab while the return is already open; switch to the existing tab.
- If a family member shares the Intuit Account, agree who is working on it at any given time.
VPNs and changing networks
A VPN that switches servers, or a phone moving between Wi-Fi and mobile data, can change the address your session comes from. Security checks may end the session when that happens. Finish the return on one steady connection.
Does TurboTax save my work when it logs me out
Intuit says TurboTax Online saves your work automatically as you move through the interview, and saves everything before signing you out when you use Sign Out. In practice, entries on screens you have already continued past are stored. A screen you were typing on when the session dropped may need to be filled in again.
So after an unexpected sign-out, sign back in and reopen the section you were in. Check the last form you edited for missing boxes before moving on; an incomplete form will otherwise show up later as a flag, as explained in TurboTax keeps saying needs review.
Still being signed out
If you have allowed cookies, closed extra tabs and dropped the VPN and TurboTax still signs you out, the problem may be on Intuit's side, especially near a filing deadline. Try again later from a different browser and device. Our guides to TurboTax login problems, TurboTax stuck in a loop and TurboTax not working cover outages and other sign-in faults.

Common questions
Why does TurboTax keep signing me out?
If it happens after a pause, it is the normal inactivity timeout. If it happens while you work, blocked cookies, privacy extensions, several open tabs or a VPN are the usual causes.
Does TurboTax save my work when it logs me out?
Intuit says TurboTax Online saves as you go. Screens you already continued past are kept; the screen you were on at the moment of the sign-out may need re-entry.
How long before TurboTax times out?
Intuit does not publish an exact idle limit. Treat any long pause as a likely sign-out and click through a screen now and then if you are reading documents.
Why does TurboTax log me out on my phone but not my computer?
Phones switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, and mobile browsers often have stricter cookie settings. Use one steady connection and allow cookies for intuit.com.
Can I stop TurboTax from logging me out?
You cannot turn the security timeout off, but allowing cookies, using a single tab and avoiding VPN server changes stop the unexpected sign-outs.
