TurboTax error codes: what each one means and the fix
A TurboTax error usually falls into one of four groups: a tax file that needs state forms you have not installed (190), a license code that will not activate (605, 606, 607, 630), an install or update that fails (1603), or TurboTax already open under another Windows user (70001). Match your code in the table below, then follow that page's steps.

What a TurboTax error code tells you
A TurboTax error code is a short number the program shows when a specific step fails. The number matters more than the wording of the message, because it tells you which part of the software broke: opening a file, checking your license, installing components, or running the program.
Most codes come from TurboTax Desktop, the version you install on Windows or Mac. TurboTax Online rarely shows numbered codes; its problems are usually sign-in, loading or review loops, which our TurboTax Online troubleshooting pages cover separately.
The four groups of TurboTax errors
- File errors appear when you open a saved return. Error 190 is the main one: the file uses state forms that are not on this computer.
- License and activation errors appear after you type your license code. Codes 605, 606, 607 and 630 are the ones people report most.
- Install and update errors appear while TurboTax or its Microsoft components install. Error 1603 is the usual code.
- Running errors appear when you launch the program. Error 70001 means another Windows user already has TurboTax open.
An IRS rejection is not a TurboTax error code. Rejections arrive after you transmit, carry an IRS business rule code, and are covered in a separate section below.
TurboTax error codes list with the fix for each
The table below lists the codes we cover, what triggers each one, and the first thing to try. Where Intuit has published its own help article we say so; where only Intuit's community forum explains a code, we label it as community information.
| Code | When it appears | Meaning | Our guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| 190 | Opening a saved .tax file | The file contains state forms not installed on this computer (Intuit help article) | Error 190 fix |
| 606 | Entering a Desktop license code | The code was not accepted as valid (community information) | Error code 606 fix |
| 605 | Entering a license code | Reported when a code is tied to one Intuit account (community information) | Error code 605 |
| 607 | Activating or downloading | Reported as a code not accepted (community information) | Error code 607 |
| 630 | Validating a license code | Message says validation failed and to try again later (community information) | Error code 630 |
| 1603 | Installing or updating on Windows | The Microsoft .NET Framework installer could not finish (Intuit help article) | Error 1603 fix |
| 70001 | Starting TurboTax on Windows | TurboTax is already running under another user account (Intuit help article) | Error 70001 fix |
If your message has no number but mentions the license, start with TurboTax license code not working. Canadian users seeing code 608 in TurboTax Canada should use our TurboTax Canada pages instead, since the Canadian software is a different program.
First steps that fix most TurboTax error messages
Intuit's general troubleshooting article for TurboTax Desktop on Windows lists a set of checks that clear many errors before you need a code-specific fix. Work through them in this order, restarting TurboTax after each one.
- Confirm your computer meets the system requirements. TurboTax Desktop 2025 for Windows needs Windows 11 (64-bit) and administrative rights; the Mac edition needs macOS Sonoma 14 or later.
- Run TurboTax as administrator: right-click the icon, choose Properties, open the Compatibility tab and tick the administrator box.
- Add https://*.intuit.com to Trusted Sites in Windows Internet Options.
- Turn off antivirus and Windows Defender for the length of the install or update only, then turn them back on.
- Run Windows Update and install everything it offers.
- Run the Windows System File Checker to repair damaged system files.
- Delete the installer you downloaded and get a fresh copy from Intuit's install site.
- If an update seems frozen at 0% or 100%, wait up to 15 minutes before closing it.
Why does TurboTax keep giving me an error?
When the same error returns after a restart, the cause is usually something outside TurboTax that has not changed. These four situations come up again and again.
You are on Windows 10
Intuit says TurboTax Desktop 2025 cannot be used on Windows 10, and Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Intuit's two options are upgrading to Windows 11 or switching to TurboTax Online. To check your version, open Settings, then System, then About.
The install is missing a component
TurboTax Desktop for Windows depends on Microsoft .NET 4.8 and the Visual C++ 2022 Redistributable. If either is damaged, installs and updates fail with 1603 or loop asking you to restart. Intuit's fix for a restart loop is to uninstall TurboTax, uninstall the Visual C++ programs, then reinstall TurboTax.
Two people use the same computer
If a spouse left TurboTax open in their Windows account, you will see 70001 every time you launch it from yours. Signing them out, or shutting the computer down fully, clears it.
The license code belongs to another account
A Desktop license code is saved to the Intuit Account that first used it. Signing in with a different email address will keep producing a license error until you use the original account.
When the error is on the IRS side, not the software
A rejected e-file is a different kind of problem. The IRS sends an acknowledgment with a business rule code that explains why the return was turned down, and under IRS Publication 1345 a rejected return counts as not filed until it is accepted.
The deadline rule gives you room to fix it: a return first sent on or before the due date is treated as on time if you correct it and resend it electronically by the fifth calendar day after the due date. Our e-file fixes section walks through the correction screens and the most common rejection reasons inside TurboTax.
Where to look up a TurboTax error code and get help safely
Search the code on Intuit's own TurboTax support site first. Intuit publishes help articles for some codes, including 190, 1603 and 70001; for others, the only explanation is in Intuit's community forum, where answers come from other users and volunteers rather than Intuit staff.
Reach Intuit through the contact options inside the program or on its support site, not through a number from a search ad or a forum post. Numbers found that way can lead to paid third-party services that ask for your license code or Intuit sign-in details, which you should never hand to anyone you did not contact through Intuit directly.
TurboTax errors for the 2027 filing season
The edition for tax year 2026 returns, used in the 2027 season, has not been released yet, and its system requirements are not yet announced as of September 2026. Intuit normally posts the new requirements in the fall, and new editions usually appear in late fall, with some forms not final until January or later.
Error codes tend to carry over between editions, so the fixes on these pages should still apply. We will update each page if Intuit changes a code's meaning or publishes a new help article.
Common questions
What does a TurboTax error code mean?
It identifies the step that failed: opening a file, activating a license, installing or updating, or starting the program. For example, 190 means the file needs state forms you have not installed, and 1603 means a Microsoft .NET install failed.
Where can I find a list of TurboTax error codes?
Intuit does not publish one master list. Our table above collects the codes users see most, with the meaning and a link to the fix for each.
Why does TurboTax say error but no code?
Messages without a number usually come from TurboTax Online or from a component such as Windows Installer. Note the exact wording and start with the general checks: system requirements, running as administrator, Windows Update and a fresh installer.
Are TurboTax Online and Desktop error codes the same?
Mostly no. Numbered codes like 190, 606 and 1603 come from the Desktop program, because they involve local files, license codes and Windows components that Online does not use.
Is a TurboTax error the same as an IRS rejection?
No. A TurboTax error stops you inside the software, while an IRS rejection comes back after you transmit and carries an IRS business rule code. A rejected return can be corrected and sent again.
