TurboTax Canada error code 608: licence code linked to another account

Short answer

TurboTax Canada error code 608 is a Desktop activation error reported with the message that the licence code is already linked to another account. It happens when you activate with a different Intuit Account from the one that first used the code. The fix is to sign in with that original account; Intuit Canada allows installs on up to 3 computers you own under one account.

What does error 608 mean in TurboTax Canada?

TurboTax Canada error code 608 means the licence code you entered is already tied to a different Intuit Account than the one you are signed in with. Answers in the TurboTax Canada community describe it with the message that the licence code is already linked to another account, shown while activating TurboTax Desktop.

Intuit Canada has not published a help article for code 608 on its own; we found none in its help centre as of September 2026. What Intuit does publish explains the rule behind it: when you activate Desktop, the licence code is saved to your Intuit Account, and every later install must use that same account (Intuit Canada, How do I install TurboTax Desktop?).

Why TurboTax error code 608 appears

The licence belongs to an account, not to a computer. Any of these situations produces the same error:

  • A second computer, a different account. You installed on a laptop and signed in with your personal email, but the desktop PC was activated with a work email.
  • A shared household copy. One partner bought TurboTax and activated it; the other installs it on their own computer and signs in with their own Intuit Account.
  • A new account created by mistake. Unable to remember the old password, you created a fresh account during activation instead of recovering the old one.
  • A second-hand or gifted code. The code was already activated by the person who bought it.

In each case the code is valid. It is simply attached somewhere else.

Connection and account checks

Work through the account side first, since that is where 608 comes from. Most people clear it at step 2 or 3.

  1. Confirm the computer is online and that a firewall is not blocking TurboTax, since activation checks the licence against Intuit's servers.
  2. Find out who activated the code first. Check the order receipt for the email address it was sent to; that is often the account holding the licence.
  3. Sign out of TurboTax Desktop and sign back in with that original Intuit Account. Intuit Canada says the saved licence is then available to select.
  4. If you cannot get into the original account, recover it rather than creating another. The steps are in TurboTax Canada login problems.
  5. If the original account is someone else's, they can sign in to activate it. Intuit Canada describes the 3 installs as computers owned by you, meaning the licence holder, so this fits a shared household computer rather than a friend's machine.

Reinstall steps if the error persists

Sometimes the program keeps a cached sign-in and repeats error 608 even after you switch accounts. A clean reinstall clears that. Intuit Canada notes that uninstalling TurboTax Desktop keeps your tax files, activation information and registration information (Intuit Canada, update troubleshooting).

  1. Close TurboTax and back up your tax file.
  2. Uninstall TurboTax Desktop Canada through Windows Settings, Apps.
  3. Restart the computer.
  4. Download the installer for the same tax year and edition from turbotax.intuit.ca and install it.
  5. At the sign-in screen, use the original Intuit Account and select the saved licence.

Is TurboTax Canada error 608 the same as H&R Block error 608?

No, and the difference matters if you are searching for turbotax canada errors and land on the wrong answer. H&R Block Canada uses error code 608 for a data-entry problem on Form T777 or T777S, Statement of Employment Expenses: the hours you used your home office for work are higher than the total hours it was used (H&R Block Canada, error code 608).

The US edition of TurboTax also has its own activation errors in the 600 range, such as TurboTax error code 606, which have their own explanations.

When to contact Intuit about error 608

Contact Intuit through the TurboTax Canada help centre if you have signed in with every account you have used and 608 still appears, if the code was bought new and has never been activated, or if the original account belongs to someone you cannot reach. Community answers on 608 point to Intuit support as the only route to reset a licence that is stuck on the wrong account.

Have the licence code, the order number or retail receipt, and the email address used at purchase ready. A code bought from a store can also be returned under that store's return policy if Intuit cannot release it.

Error 608 does not affect filing once activation succeeds. If you then see forms that are not ready, read TurboTax Canada locked forms; if the CRA connection is the problem, H&R Block not connecting to CRA explains the CRA's maintenance window, which applies to TurboTax as well. Every other issue is listed on the TurboTax Canada problems hub.

Step by step

  1. Check the receipt

Find the email address the licence code was sent to; that account likely holds the licence.

  2. Switch accounts

Sign out of TurboTax Desktop and sign in with the original Intuit Account.

  3. Select the licence

Choose the saved licence code to activate the install.

  4. Reinstall if needed

Uninstall, restart, reinstall the same edition and sign in with the original account.

  5. Contact Intuit

If the error continues, ask Intuit support to reset the licence, with your proof of purchase.

Common questions

How do I fix error 608 in TurboTax Canada?

Sign out of TurboTax Desktop and sign in with the Intuit Account that first activated the licence code, then select the saved licence. If you cannot identify or access that account, contact Intuit to reset the licence.

Can my spouse and I use one TurboTax Canada licence on two computers?

Intuit Canada allows installs on up to 3 computers you own, but every install must sign in to the same Intuit Account. Signing in with a spouse's separate account triggers the already-linked message.

Did I lose my TurboTax purchase if I see error 608?

No. The code is valid; it is attached to another Intuit Account. Signing in with that account, or asking Intuit to move the licence, restores access.

Does error 608 mean my code was stolen?

Not usually. The common causes are a second account in the same household or a new account created by mistake. If the code was never used by anyone you know, report it to Intuit with your proof of purchase.

Why does H&R Block show error 608 on my home office expenses?

In H&R Block Canada, error 608 means the work hours entered for your home office on Form T777 or T777S exceed the total hours the space was used. It is unrelated to the TurboTax activation error.
