TurboTax Canada update not working: the repair tool and manual fix

Short answer

When a TurboTax Canada update is not working, Intuit Canada's fix is a small download called TTDCaUpdateFix.exe for Desktop installs made before May 2025: run it, reopen TurboTax, and the patch should download. If it still fails, download the installer for your tax year, uninstall, and reinstall. Intuit says your tax files, activation and registration survive the uninstall.

Why won't TurboTax Canada update?

A TurboTax Canada update not working usually means the program's built-in updater cannot download or apply the patch, not that the patch itself is missing. Intuit Canada published a specific repair for this on older Desktop installs, which tells you the fault sits in the update component on the computer (Intuit Canada, troubleshoot update issues).

Other causes are simpler. A firewall or antivirus program can block the download, an unstable internet connection can cut it off part way, and running TurboTax without administrator rights can stop the patch from being written to the program folder.

Why updates matter before you NETFILE

Updates are how TurboTax Desktop receives the final versions of CRA and Revenu Quebec forms. Intuit Canada's locked-forms guidance tells Desktop users to run Check for Updates before filing so that forms finalized after release become available (TurboTax Canada, locked forms). A program that cannot update can leave you stuck behind a form that has already been released to everyone else.

Updates also carry the changes needed to transmit through NETFILE. The CRA closes NETFILE for part of each winter to prepare for the new tax year; in 2026 it was closed from February 1 to 22 and opened on February 23 at 6:00 a.m. Eastern (Canada.ca, NETFILE). The 2027 opening date for 2026 returns is not yet announced.

If you cannot file and are unsure whether the cause is an update or a form, read TurboTax Canada locked forms first.

When the automatic update fails

Before downloading anything, try these quick checks. They clear most one-off update failures in a few minutes.

  1. Save your return and close TurboTax completely, then reopen it. Desktop checks for updates when it starts.
  2. Run Check for Updates from the program's menu and leave it running; a large patch can take several minutes on a slow connection.
  3. Close TurboTax, right-click its icon and choose Run as administrator, then check for updates again.
  4. Temporarily allow TurboTax through your firewall or antivirus, update, then turn protection back on.
  5. Restart Windows, since a pending Windows update can lock files TurboTax needs to replace.

If the update still fails or loops back to the same message, move to the manual fix below.

TurboTax Canada manual update: the TTDCaUpdateFix tool

Intuit Canada's manual fix for update problems applies to tax years installed before May 2025. Its instructions, in order:

  1. Download TTDCaUpdateFix.exe from the link in Intuit Canada's help article on troubleshooting update issues.
  2. Select the downloaded file to run it.
  3. Open TurboTax Desktop Canada again.
  4. Let the program download the patch, which should now complete.

The TurboTax Canada patch itself still comes through the program; the repair tool fixes the part of TurboTax that fetches it. Intuit does not describe which error messages the tool addresses, so try it whenever the update fails on an install from before May 2025.

Reinstall when the patch still will not download

If the tool does not help, or your install is newer than May 2025, Intuit Canada's second option is a fresh install. A reinstall replaces the damaged update component, and you then run Check for Updates on a clean program.

  1. Back up your tax file to a USB drive or cloud folder, as a precaution.
  2. Download the installer for your tax year from the TurboTax Desktop downloads page on turbotax.intuit.ca.
  3. Uninstall TurboTax Desktop Canada through Windows Settings, Apps.
  4. Run the new installer and sign in with the same Intuit Account.
  5. Open your tax file and continue.

Intuit states that uninstalling keeps your tax files, activation information and registration information. If you do need to re-enter the licence code, see TurboTax Canada activation code. Install-stage failures are covered in install TurboTax Canada.

TurboTax Canada update download: what to avoid

Search results for a TurboTax Canada update download sometimes lead to third-party sites offering patches or installers. Do not use them. Intuit distributes updates through the program, the repair tool through its help centre and installers through turbotax.intuit.ca only.

Common questions

How do I manually update TurboTax Canada Desktop?

For installs made before May 2025, run Intuit Canada's TTDCaUpdateFix.exe and reopen TurboTax so the patch downloads. Otherwise, download the current installer for your tax year, uninstall and reinstall.

Will reinstalling TurboTax Canada lose my return?

Intuit Canada says your tax files, activation information and registration information remain after uninstalling TurboTax Desktop. Backing up the tax file first is still sensible.

Why does TurboTax Canada keep asking me to update?

Desktop checks for updates each time it opens, and Intuit releases several during filing season as forms are finalized. If it asks repeatedly for the same update, that update is failing to install; use the repair tool or reinstall.

Do I need to update TurboTax Canada before I NETFILE?

Yes. Intuit Canada tells Desktop users to run Check for Updates before filing so the latest forms and filing changes are installed.

Is there a separate TurboTax Canada patch download?

Intuit Canada's update help does not point to a standalone patch file. Patches install through Check for Updates, and the fallback is the full installer on the downloads page.
