Why won't H&R Block connect to the CRA?

H&R Block not connecting to the CRA is most often a timing problem, not a software fault. H&R Block Canada's own support page explains that errors with Auto-fill my return (AFR) and NETFILE commonly appear because the CRA website is down for daily maintenance, and both services need that website to download or send data (H&R Block Canada, AFR and NETFILE errors).

The CRA sets that window at 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. Eastern time, seven days a week (Canada.ca, NETFILE). In Pacific time that is midnight to 3 a.m., and in Atlantic time 4 a.m. to 7 a.m. If you are filing late at night on the West Coast, you are more likely to hit it than you might think.

What connects to the CRA: Auto-fill and NETFILE

H&R Block Canada software talks to the CRA at two separate points, and they fail for different reasons. Knowing which one gave the error cuts the fix down to a few checks.

• Auto-fill my return pulls information the CRA already has, such as T4 and T5 slips, RRSP deduction limits and tuition carryforwards, into your return. It needs you to sign in to your CRA account inside the software.
• NETFILE sends the finished return to the CRA. It does not need your CRA password, but it does need the CRA to be open and your return to be eligible.

The CRA lists H&R Block's product as certified for NETFILE for tax years 2018 to 2025, with Auto-fill my return and ReFILE for 2022 to 2025 (Canada.ca, H&R Block details). A return for an earlier year cannot be sent electronically through any certified product.

Can H&R Block Canada use Auto-fill my return?

Yes, H&R Block Canada supports Auto-fill my return, but three CRA rules decide whether it works for you (Canada.ca, Auto-fill my return).

1. You need a registered CRA account. Sign in with your CRA user ID and password or a Sign-in Partner (your online banking login).
2. Provincial sign-ins are not accepted. The CRA says that if you sign in through a provincial partner, meaning Alberta.ca Account or BC Services Card, you cannot use Auto-fill. Switch to a CRA user ID or a banking Sign-in Partner.
3. Slips arrive on the CRA's schedule. The CRA says it should receive most slips from issuers by the end of February and have them available by mid-March. A slip that is missing in Auto-fill is usually one the CRA does not have yet.

If Auto-fill connects but the data is wrong or incomplete, the CRA says it is your job to contact the slip issuer. Enter the missing slip by hand rather than waiting. The same rules apply to every certified product; Auto-fill my return not working covers the CRA side in more depth.

CRA account sign-in problems inside H&R Block

When the Auto-fill sign-in screen rejects you, the problem is with your CRA account, not with H&R Block. Your H&R Block login and your CRA login are different credentials. Test by signing in to CRA My Account directly on canada.ca in a browser.

• If CRA My Account also rejects you, recover the CRA user ID or password through the CRA's own sign-in help, then return to H&R Block.
• If CRA My Account works directly but not inside H&R Block, check which method you used. A provincial partner login will work on canada.ca but not for Auto-fill.
• If your CRA account was recently locked or revoked, wait for the CRA to restore access; the software cannot bypass it.

NETFILE service hours and the filing season

NETFILE is not open all year round. For the 2026 season it opened on Monday, February 23, 2026 at 6:00 a.m. Eastern and runs until Friday, January 29, 2027; it was closed from February 1 to 22, 2026 for updates (Canada.ca, NETFILE eligibility). The opening date for 2026 returns in 2027 is not yet announced; the CRA usually confirms it in January or February.

Some returns cannot use NETFILE at any time. The CRA excludes returns for a deceased person, bankruptcy returns and returns for deemed residents, among others. If H&R Block says your return is not eligible, that restriction comes from the CRA.

Why is H&R Block not working today in Canada: software or CRA outage?

If H&R Block will not open, sign in or save, the problem is with H&R Block. If it works normally until the step that contacts the CRA, the problem is almost always the CRA connection. Use that dividing line before troubleshooting.

H&R Block Canada software versus H&R Block Canada online

H&R Block Canada offers both downloadable software and an online product, and each has its own help centre. With the downloadable software, also confirm your firewall is not blocking the program from the internet, and install any H&R Block update offered before you try to file. With the online product, try another browser and clear its cache.

If the CRA accepts the connection but rejects the return with a numbered error, that is a NETFILE rejection rather than a connection failure. Look the number up in NETFILE error codes.
