What TurboTax error code 606 points to

TurboTax error code 606 is a license activation error. It appears after you sign in to your Intuit Account and type the license code, and the message says the code you entered is not valid. The program stays locked until a valid code is accepted.

We did not find a dedicated Intuit help article for 606 when we checked in September 2026. The explanations below come from answers in Intuit's TurboTax community, where volunteers and other users reply, so treat them as common causes rather than an official diagnosis. If none of them fits, Intuit support can look up the code itself.

The three causes community answers name

• One or more characters were typed wrong.
• The code is an activation code for TurboTax Online, typed into the Desktop program, or the reverse.
• The code does not match the product installed, for example a code bought for one edition or year typed into another.

Error code 606 how to fix: check the code, the product year and the account

Go through these checks in order. Most people with a genuine code get past 606 in the first three.

1. Retype the code slowly. Community answers describe the Desktop license code as a 16-character mix of letters and numbers. Count the characters you entered.
2. Watch for look-alike characters. If your code contains a character that could be a zero or the letter O, or a one or the letter I, try the other reading.
3. Copy the code from its source rather than memory. For a download, that is the order confirmation email or your Intuit Account; for a box, the code card or sticker inside.
4. Confirm you have the Desktop program, not an Online code. A code meant for TurboTax Online will not activate installed software.
5. Confirm the year. A code for TurboTax 2024 will not activate TurboTax 2025, because Intuit releases a separate Desktop program for each tax year.
6. Run TurboTax as administrator and pause antivirus or a VPN while activating, then turn them back on. Community answers suggest this when the code is certainly correct.
7. If it still fails, uninstall TurboTax, download a fresh installer from Intuit's install site, reinstall and enter the code again.

TurboTax license code error 606 and the Intuit Account link

Intuit's getting-started article says your Desktop license code is saved in your Intuit Account once you enter it. That link makes reinstalling easier, but it also means the account you sign in with matters.

If you, a spouse or a family member first used the code under a different email address, sign in with that account instead. A separate message usually says the code is already linked to another account, and some users see a 600-range code instead. When to ask Intuit to reset or replace the code

Contact Intuit support once you have confirmed the characters, the product type, the year and the account. Community answers say support can verify a purchase and reset a code or issue a new one, which no volunteer or third party can do.

Have these ready before you reach out:

• The full license code and the exact error text.
• Proof of purchase: order number, receipt photo or retailer invoice.
• The product name and year printed on the box or order, such as TurboTax Deluxe 2025.
• The email address of the Intuit Account you are signing in with.

Use the contact options inside TurboTax or on Intuit's support site. Do not call numbers from ads or forum posts, and never give your Intuit password to anyone.

Avoid buying codes from resellers you cannot verify

Several users in Intuit's 606 threads bought boxes at warehouse or office-supply stores and hit the error, and some fixed it by returning the box and buying straight from TurboTax. A genuine retail box can still activate normally, so this does not mean store copies are bad. It does mean the seller and the receipt matter.

Be most careful with codes sold alone on auction or marketplace sites at a steep discount. A code that was already activated by someone else, or that belongs to another year or edition, will fail, and Intuit can only help if you can show where it came from. If a retailer's code will not work, the store's return policy is often the quickest route to a working copy.
