What the TurboTax Windows 11 requirement covers

The TurboTax Windows 11 requirement is set out on Intuit's system requirements page for TurboTax Desktop 2025, the edition used for tax year 2025 returns. It lists Windows 11 in its 64-bit form, plus an account with administrative rights. Intuit's help article on Windows 10 goes further and says the 2025 edition cannot be used on Windows 10.

This rule is about the downloaded or boxed desktop program. TurboTax Online runs in a web browser, so the Windows 11 rule on the requirements page is not what decides whether you can use it.

Does TurboTax require Windows 11 for every edition?

The Windows 11 rule is tied to the 2025 edition. Intuit's notice explains the change against the end of Microsoft's Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. It does not say that older editions you installed in earlier years stop working, so the requirement is best read as applying to TurboTax Desktop 2025 and, until Intuit says otherwise, to future editions it ships.

How to check your Windows version and 64-bit status

You need two pieces of information: whether the PC runs Windows 11, and whether it is the 64-bit system type. Microsoft's support page describes two ways to find them.

1. Right-click the Start button and choose Settings.
2. Select System, then About.
3. Under Windows specifications, read the Edition line. It should say Windows 11 Home, Pro or another Windows 11 edition.
4. Under Device specifications, read System type. It should say 64-bit operating system.

For a quicker version check, press the Windows key and R together, type winver and press Enter. A small window shows the Windows edition and build. It does not show 64-bit status, so use Settings, System, About for that part.

TurboTax desktop on Windows 11: common issues

Having Windows 11 is necessary but not always enough. These are the Windows 11 problems that come up most often with the desktop program, each with the fix Intuit gives.

Standard user account instead of administrator

Many new Windows 11 PCs are set up with a family member or child account that lacks admin rights. Intuit requires administrative rights, so installs and updates can fail silently. Sign in as the administrator, or right-click TurboTax and choose Run as administrator.

.NET 4.8 missing or damaged

If the .NET 4.8 component is damaged, you can see error 1603 during install or update. Run Windows Update first, since it maintains .NET, then retry the install.

Windows Security blocking TurboTax

Windows 11's built-in protection can hold back parts of an install. Intuit suggests adding TurboTax Desktop to Windows Defender's allowed apps and temporarily pausing other antivirus software while installing.

Several people sharing one PC

Windows 11 makes it easy to keep several users signed in at once. If TurboTax is open under another user, you get error 70001 and the program will not start for you until that copy is closed.

What if my computer cannot upgrade to Windows 11?

Microsoft's minimum specifications for Windows 11 are strict, and older PCs often fall short on the security chip or the processor rather than on speed. Microsoft's free PC Health Check app tells you exactly which item fails.

If your PC fails the check, Intuit's two suggestions still apply: move to a Windows 11 computer, or file with TurboTax Online in a browser.
