Why TurboTax won't update and why it matters

TurboTax won't update for a handful of reasons: the updater is slower than it looks, the hard drive is too full to unpack the files, antivirus software blocks the download, or the Microsoft .NET component underneath it is damaged. Each has a specific fix, covered below in the order worth trying.

Updates are not optional polish. The desktop edition ships before every form is final, and Intuit pushes form changes, calculation fixes and state updates through the updater during the season. A copy that stops updating can leave you with a form marked as not ready, or with numbers that differ from the final version.

TurboTax updater stuck: let a slow update run

Intuit's guidance for an update that freezes at 0% or 100% is short: do not end the download process, and wait up to 15 minutes. The progress bar is not a reliable clock. The updater often downloads in the background while the bar sits still, then installs everything at once.

While you wait, keep the computer awake. Plug a laptop in and make sure sleep does not kick in partway through, because a sleep during install is one of the ways an update ends up half-applied. If the bar has not moved after 15 minutes and the disk activity light is idle, it is safe to treat the update as failed.

TurboTax update failed: free up disk space and retry

If the updater closes with an error, Intuit's first recommendation is disk housekeeping, then a retry. An update has to download and unpack before it installs, so it needs more free room than the finished files take up.

1. Close TurboTax.
2. Type Disk Cleanup into the Start menu search, run it on your C: drive and remove temporary files.
3. Empty the Recycle Bin.
4. Open TurboTax and select Check for Updates to resume the update.

Intuit lists 1 GB of disk space for the 2025 program itself, and up to 4.5 GB more if Microsoft .NET 4.8 has to be installed. If your drive is nearly full, clearing 5 GB or more before an update is a reasonable target.

How to run a TurboTax Desktop manual update

When the built-in updater keeps failing, Intuit publishes a manual update file for each supported edition. It is a standalone installer that applies the latest update without going through the program's Check for Updates button.

1. Close TurboTax completely.
2. Go to Intuit's Manually update TurboTax for Windows software help page and select the link for your edition.
3. Save the file, then open it. For the 2025 edition the file is named w_perrelsuperpatchIS_ttax_2025.exe.
4. Follow the prompts until it finishes, then open TurboTax and confirm your forms show as updated.

TurboTax not updating because of security blocks

Security software sometimes flags part of an update as unknown and quietly removes it. The update then reports failure, or it completes but the program behaves oddly. Intuit's Windows checklist includes three settings that address this.

• Add https://*.intuit.com to Trusted Sites in Internet Options, with the zone set to Medium.
• Add TurboTax Desktop to the allowed apps list in Windows Security (Windows Defender).
• Turn off third-party antivirus only while the update runs, then turn it back on.

Also check that the Windows account you are using has administrator rights, since the update writes to the program folder. If the update runs but the program then refuses to start, go to TurboTax won't open next.

If the update fails with error 1603

Error 1603 reads as A fatal error occurred during installation or updating. Intuit explains that it comes from the Microsoft .NET Framework installer failing, with causes such as damaged Windows permissions, corrupted registry keys or a faulty .NET install. The TurboTax files themselves are often fine.

TurboTax update not working on an older PC

The 2025 edition only supports Windows 11 in 64-bit form. If you somehow have it on a machine that no longer qualifies, updates are the first thing likely to break. Confirm your setup against the TurboTax Windows 11 requirement before spending time on repeated retries.
