When does TurboTax come out: the release date status

The short answer to when does TurboTax come out for the 2027 season is that nobody outside Intuit knows the exact day yet. We checked Intuit's own pages on September 18, 2026 and found no published release date for the tax year 2026 edition of TurboTax Desktop or TurboTax Online.

What we can say from the pattern of earlier seasons: the new edition normally becomes available in the late fall, weeks before the IRS starts accepting returns. Being able to buy and install it is not the same as being able to file with it, which is the part most people actually care about.

Which edition is "TurboTax 2026"?

The naming trips up a lot of people. TurboTax editions are named for the tax year, not the year you file. The version you used in spring 2026 was TurboTax 2025, for tax year 2025 returns. The next one, TurboTax 2026, covers income you earn during calendar 2026 and is the product you will file with in early 2027.

So a search for the TurboTax 2027 release date is really asking about the TurboTax 2026 edition. There will not be a separate product called TurboTax 2027 until the 2028 filing season.

TurboTax Desktop 2026 download requirements are already out

Intuit's system requirements page now lists a separate entry for Federal Tax Year 2026. It shows the Windows download needs Windows 11 (64-bit) with administrative rights, 4 GB of RAM or more recommended, and 1 GB of disk space plus up to 4.5 GB for Microsoft .NET 4.8 if it is not already installed. The Mac download needs macOS Sequoia 15 or later, 4 GB of RAM recommended and 2 GB of disk space.

The Mac change matters. The 2025 edition ran on macOS Sonoma 14, so a Mac that cannot move past Sonoma may not be able to install the next edition. If that describes your Mac, read TurboTax won't open on Mac before you buy anything.

How past editions rolled out: purchase, install, forms updates

Each season follows the same broad sequence, even though the exact dates move from year to year. Knowing the order explains why the program can be on your computer for weeks before it lets you file.

1. Late fall: the new Desktop edition and the new Online year become available. You can enter W-2 data, set up dependents and transfer last year's return.
2. December and January: the software receives updates as the IRS and states finalize forms. Some screens may show a form as not ready.
3. IRS opening day: e-file begins. In 2026 the IRS opened the season on Monday, January 26, with e-file starting at 9 a.m. Eastern.
4. February through April: remaining federal and state forms arrive through updates. The 2026 deadline for 2025 returns was Wednesday, April 15, 2026.

Forms that depend on new law usually come later than the basic Form 1040. For tax year 2025, for example, the deductions for tips, overtime, car loan interest and the enhanced senior deduction were claimed on the new Schedule 1-A. Why you can install before you can file

Buying the software early gets you the program, not permission to transmit. The IRS will not accept tax year 2026 returns until it opens the 2027 season, and it has not announced that date. The IRS usually announces opening day in early January.

You cannot transmit a return before opening day. TurboTax's e-file step tells you whether your return will be sent now or queued; the timing rules are on when does TurboTax start accepting returns.

When can I file with TurboTax in 2027?

You can transmit once the IRS opens e-file for the 2027 season and the forms your return needs are final in the software. If your return uses only common forms, that may be opening day. If it needs a late form, you wait for that form's update even if the IRS is already accepting returns.

What to do now to get ready

There is useful work you can do in the fall while you wait for the release. None of it requires the new edition.

• Check your operating system. On Windows, open Settings, System, About and confirm Windows 11 and a 64-bit system type. On a Mac, open the Apple menu, About This Mac and confirm macOS Sequoia 15 or later.
• Find last year's return file. TurboTax transfers data from your .tax2025 file. Copy it to a USB drive or cloud folder now, especially if you plan to use a new computer; see TurboTax transfer to a new computer.

• Keep a folder for 2026 documents. W-2s, 1099s and Form 1095-A arrive in January and February.
