When does TurboTax start accepting returns in 2027?

Short answer

When does TurboTax start accepting returns for the 2027 season? No date is set yet. A return only counts once the IRS accepts it, and the IRS has not announced its 2027 opening day; it usually does so in early January. Last season the IRS began accepting tax year 2025 returns on January 26, 2026 at 9 a.m. Eastern.

When does TurboTax start accepting returns for 2027?

The honest answer to when does TurboTax start accepting returns for tax year 2026 is that the date depends on the IRS, and the IRS has not announced it as of September 18, 2026. The agency normally names the first day of the filing season in early January, a few weeks before it opens.

Intuit has also not published a release date for the tax year 2026 editions of TurboTax Online or Desktop. When the IRS date is announced, it will appear in the IRS newsroom, and this page will be updated with it.

How software acceptance differs from IRS acceptance

Three separate moments get blurred into one question. Being able to open and prepare a return in TurboTax is the first. Pressing transmit is the second. The IRS acknowledging the return as accepted is the third, and it is the only one that makes the return filed.

  • Prepare: possible as soon as the new edition is out, even though some forms may still be marked as not final.
  • Transmit: possible once the software lets you complete the File section, which requires the forms on your return to be finalized.
  • Accepted: only from the IRS opening day onward. The IRS does not accept current-year individual returns before that date.

Intuit's help article on the start of e-filing puts the practical test plainly: you can file once you have all your W-2s and 1099s and every form and schedule in your return has been finalized. It said most were ready by late January last season.

Does TurboTax hold returns until the IRS opens?

Intuit's help pages we checked do not describe how returns completed before the IRS opening day will be handled in the 2027 season. What is certain is the IRS side: no acceptance can happen before opening day, so an acknowledgment for any early submission can only arrive after the IRS starts processing. If TurboTax offers an early send option, read its on-screen explanation of when the return actually goes to the IRS.

When did the IRS open last season? The 2026 dates

The 2026 season is the best available guide to how the 2027 season may run. The IRS opened on Monday, January 26, 2026, with e-file starting at 9 a.m. Eastern, and expected about 164 million individual returns for tax year 2025.

How the 2026 filing season opened
DateWhat opened or closed
Friday, January 9, 2026IRS Free File guided software began accepting returns
Monday, January 26, 2026IRS began accepting tax year 2025 returns; Free File Fillable Forms opened
Wednesday, April 15, 2026Deadline for most 2025 returns
Monday, April 20, 2026Last day to resend a return first sent on time and rejected

Note the gap between January 9 and January 26. Free File partners could take returns earlier than the general opening day, while the IRS itself started accepting returns on January 26. Whether the same pattern repeats in 2027 is not yet announced.

When can I file taxes in 2027 with TurboTax early filing?

Plan on the IRS opening day, whatever it turns out to be, as the earliest date your return can be accepted. Filing on day one only helps if your documents are complete; employers have until January 31 to send most W-2s, and a return sent before a late form arrives may need an amended return later.

Some returns wait longer no matter what. Intuit ties filing to every form and schedule in your return being finalized, so a return that uses a form still marked as not final has to wait for that form, even after the IRS opens.

Still need to file a 2025 return?

You do not have to wait for 2027 for that. IRS Publication 1345 says individual returns can be e-filed year-round except for a short cutover period at the end of the calendar year, and e-file covers returns due in the current year and the two previous years. So a late 2025 return can still be e-filed this fall, before that cutover, as long as your software still offers transmission for that year.

What to prepare now so the first submission is accepted

Several of the most common e-file rejections can be headed off months ahead. Use the fall to check these.

  1. Save your 2025 AGI. You will sign the 2026 return with it; on the 2025 Form 1040 it is line 11a. See prior-year AGI or PIN for other ways to find it.
  2. Check whether your 2025 return was processed late. If it was, the IRS may not match its AGI in January, which is the classic cause of an early-season TurboTax rejected AGI message.
  3. Watch for a new IP PIN. If you are enrolled, a new six-digit IP PIN is issued each year; enter the current one or the return rejects.
  4. Check names and SSNs against Social Security cards for everyone on the return, including new dependents.
  5. Decide Desktop or Online early. The Desktop edition's release date is covered in when does TurboTax come out.

If a January submission does come back rejected, you have not lost your place in any queue that matters for the deadline. Fix it and resend using the steps in TurboTax rejected return, or start from the guide to resubmitting a rejected return for other products.

Common questions

When can I file with TurboTax in 2027?

The IRS has not announced its 2027 opening day. It usually names the date in early January; in 2026 it began accepting returns on January 26.

When will TurboTax start accepting returns if I finish early?

The IRS cannot accept a current-year return before its opening day, so an acknowledgment only arrives after that. Read TurboTax's on-screen message about when an early return is actually sent.

When does TurboTax e-file open for tax year 2026?

No date has been published by Intuit or the IRS as of September 2026. The practical opening is the IRS start date plus the point when the forms on your return are finalized.

What time did e-file open on the first day of the 2026 season?

The IRS said e-file began at 9 a.m. Eastern on Monday, January 26, 2026.

Is the 2027 tax deadline April 15?

April 15 is the statutory due date for most individual returns, and April 15, 2027 falls on a Thursday. The IRS confirms the deadline in its filing-season announcement.

Can I still e-file my 2025 return this year?

Yes. Pub 1345 says individual returns can be e-filed year-round except during a short cutover at the end of the calendar year.
