How to file a prior-year tax return, or a late 2025 return, with tax software

Short answer

To file a prior-year tax return, use that year's edition of your tax software, prepare the return, then print and mail it unless the program can e-file it. TurboTax mails every 2024 and earlier return, while FreeTaxUSA and TaxAct e-file 2023 and 2024 returns only with an IRS Identity Protection PIN. A late 2025 return can still go electronically until October 31, 2026 in TurboTax Online, or November 19, 2026 in FreeTaxUSA.

Can you still file a prior-year tax return?

Yes. The IRS tells late filers to file a past-due return the same way and to the same location as an on-time return, or to the address on any notice they received. What changes from year to year is the software: each program sells only a few past editions, and most of them cannot send an older return electronically.

As of October 20, 2026 there are two different situations. A 2025 return that missed the October 15, 2026 extended deadline is late, but it is still the current year in most software. A return for 2024 or earlier is a prior-year return, which nearly always means a past edition of the program and a paper return.

Can I still e-file my 2025 return after October 15?

For a few more weeks, depending on the program. Intuit's help article, updated August 17, 2026, says that if you filed an extension but did not file by October 15, you have until October 31 to file your return online in TurboTax, and that late filing fees may apply. After October 31, TurboTax Online cannot start, finish or e-file new returns, and Intuit says to use TurboTax Desktop and mail the return.

FreeTaxUSA gives a later date: its help page says the last day to e-file a 2025 return is November 19, 2026. FreeTaxUSA also notes that the IRS shuts down e-filing for maintenance each year from late November to early January, so nothing goes electronically in that gap.

The free government routes have already closed. The IRS said Free File would remain available through October 15, and Free File Fillable Forms stopped taking returns on the same date. If your return was sent by October 15 and rejected, the window to fix and resend it ended on October 20, 2026; resubmitting a rejected return explains what to do now.

How do you file a 2024, 2023 or older return in TurboTax?

TurboTax handles prior years only in its Desktop software. Intuit says you cannot file a prior-year return, meaning tax year 2024 or earlier, with TurboTax Online, and that 2022 to 2024 returns must be filed by mail. Its steps for preparing one are:

  1. Go to turbotax.com and choose File your taxes, then File taxes for a prior year.
  2. Pick the year and version, then Windows or Mac.
  3. Sign in, complete the purchase, then download and install the software on a computer.
  4. Open TurboTax and complete the return for that year.
  5. Follow TurboTax's instructions to print and mail it.

Intuit sells Desktop editions for 2022, 2023 and 2024 and says it does not sell TurboTax for 2021 or earlier; for those years it points to the forms and instructions on the IRS and state websites. Its past-years page listed the 2024 editions at $80 for Deluxe, $115 for Premier and $130 for Home & Business in October 2026. Intuit also says TurboTax Full Service may be able to file 2023 and 2024 returns together with your 2025 return, subject to eligibility.

Finishing a return you started in TurboTax Online

If you began a 2022, 2023 or 2024 return online and never filed it, the work is not lost. Install that year's Desktop edition, sign in with the same Intuit account, download the .tax file rather than the PDF from Your tax returns & documents, then open it with Find a Tax File and finish the return. Our page on the TurboTax .tax file explains which edition opens which file.

Which software can e-file a prior-year return?

The IRS e-file system accepts the current tax year and the two before it. The IRS's own example is that in January 2026, Form 1040 e-file accepted tax years 2025, 2024 and 2023. Consumer software is narrower than that window.

  • TurboTax: Intuit says prior-year returns cannot be e-filed with TurboTax Online and must be mailed.
  • FreeTaxUSA: prepares 2018 through 2024 returns. 2023 and 2024 returns and amendments can be e-filed if you have an IP PIN; 2022 and older must be mailed. Federal prior-year returns are $0 and state returns $17.99.
  • TaxAct: creates and files the current and two prior tax years. TaxAct says most people filing their own prior-year return must print and mail it, but an IP PIN lets you e-file it.
  • H&R Block: says it has no way to file prior-year returns with its online products; use its download software for that year, or an H&R Block office.
  • Cash App Taxes: lists prior-year returns among the situations it does not support.

Getting an IP PIN to e-file an older return

An Identity Protection PIN is a six-digit number from the IRS. Anyone with an SSN or ITIN who can verify their identity can get one, and the fastest way is through your IRS online account. It is valid for one calendar year, it must be used on any federal return you file during that year, including a prior-year return, and the IRS says it is generally available to view in your online account from mid-January through mid-November. Where to type it is shown in entering an IP PIN in tax software.

What does it cost to file a prior-year return late?

If you are owed a refund, nothing in penalties: the IRS says there is no penalty for filing late when a refund is due. The risk is the time limit. You must file within 3 years of the return's due date to claim a refund. A 2023 return was due April 15, 2024, so a 2023 refund can generally be claimed until April 15, 2027.

If you owe, the failure-to-file penalty is 5% of the unpaid tax for each month or part of a month the return is late, up to a maximum of 25%. For a return due in 2026 that is more than 60 days late, the minimum penalty is $525 or 100% of the tax owed, whichever is less. When the failure-to-pay penalty also applies, the IRS reduces the failure-to-file penalty by that amount, and interest runs on top. The IRS says it sends a notice or letter if you owe the failure-to-file penalty, and it charges interest on penalties too.

How do you mail a prior-year return?

  • Print the complete return from the software for that year, not this year's edition, and sign and date it.
  • Attach copies of W-2s and any 1099s that show federal tax withheld.
  • Mail it to the address in that year's form instructions, or to the address on an IRS notice if you received one.
  • Use certified mail with a return receipt, or an IRS-designated private delivery service, so you can prove when it was sent. Intuit suggests the same.
  • Send each tax year in its own envelope, and keep a full copy of everything you mail.

Missing forms for an old year are not a reason to wait. The IRS says you can request wage and income information with Form 4506-T, checking the box on line 8, and transcripts can also be pulled online, as explained in downloading a prior-year return. If the IRS has already prepared a substitute return for you, it sends a notice proposing a tax assessment, and filing your own past-due return is one of the ways the IRS lists to respond.

Step by step

  1. Pick the right edition

Use the software edition for the tax year you are filing, not this year's.

  2. Gather that year's forms

Collect W-2s and 1099s, or request a wage and income transcript from the IRS.

  3. Prepare the return

Complete the return and check the figures against your documents.

  4. Choose e-file or mail

E-file only where the program allows it for that year; otherwise print the return.

  5. Sign and mail with proof

Sign, attach withholding forms and send it by certified mail or an IRS-designated delivery service.

Common questions

Can I e-file a prior-year return in TurboTax?

No. Intuit says 2024 and earlier returns cannot be e-filed with TurboTax Online and must be mailed. Prepare the return in that year's TurboTax Desktop edition and follow its print and mail instructions.

Can I still file my 2025 taxes online after October 15, 2026?

Yes, for a short time. Intuit says TurboTax Online takes late 2025 returns until October 31, 2026, and FreeTaxUSA says its last e-file day for 2025 returns is November 19, 2026. After those dates, prepare the return in desktop software and mail it.

Is there a penalty for filing a prior-year return late if I am owed a refund?

The IRS says there is no penalty for filing late when a refund is due. You do need to file within 3 years of the return's due date to claim the refund, which for a 2023 return generally means by April 15, 2027.

How far back can I file with tax software?

TurboTax sells Desktop editions for 2022 to 2024, FreeTaxUSA prepares 2018 to 2024 returns, and TaxAct covers the current and two prior tax years. For older years, use the IRS's prior-year forms and instructions.

Do I need an IP PIN to e-file a prior-year return?

In FreeTaxUSA and TaxAct, yes: both say a 2023 or 2024 return can be e-filed only if you have an IRS Identity Protection PIN. The fastest way to get one is your IRS online account.

Can IRS Free File do a prior-year return?

No. IRS Free File covers only the current tax year, and the IRS said it would remain available through October 15, 2026 for 2025 returns.
