Wealthsimple Tax Auto-fill not working: fixing the CRA import

Short answer

When Wealthsimple Tax autofill is not working, the CRA usually does not have the slip yet: it expects most slips by the end of February and makes them available by mid-March. If nothing imports at all, check the CRA sign-in step instead: a blocked pop-up, a new CRA My Account still waiting for its access code, or ERR.082 from browser cookies.

How Auto-fill works in Wealthsimple Tax

Auto-fill my return is a CRA service that lets certified software copy the tax information the CRA holds at that moment into your return. Wealthsimple Tax connects to it through a CRA sign-in window, where you log in with your CRA My Account credentials, and then lists the slips it can import.

Before the Wealthsimple Tax CRA autofill button will start, Wealthsimple needs three fields in the About You section: your Social Insurance Number, date of birth and province of residence. You also need an active CRA My Account and a Wealthsimple profile.

  1. Sign in to Wealthsimple, open the Profile menu at the bottom left and choose Tax.
  2. Pick the tax profile, then select Auto-fill My Return in the left menu.
  3. Select Import forms and agree to the terms.
  4. Select Authorize with CRA My Account and sign in to the CRA in the pop-up window.
  5. Select Next to confirm the retrieval and wait; Wealthsimple says it can take a few minutes.
  6. Close the CRA window, review the slips listed, tick the ones you want (or Select All) and choose Import.

Why won't Wealthsimple Tax import from the CRA?

If the Wealthsimple Tax import from the CRA is not working at all, meaning no list of slips ever appears, the break is in the sign-in handoff. Check these in order.

  • The CRA window never opens: your browser is blocking pop-ups. Allow pop-ups for Wealthsimple and start again.
  • A Select an option drop-down appeared and was skipped: Wealthsimple says it must be completed when it is shown.
  • You are filing for a spouse, parent or friend: you must be authorized as that person's CRA representative before Auto-fill will work for their return.
  • You changed banks for CRA sign-in: if you are moving your Interac sign-in partner to Wealthsimple, switch partners before using it.
  • Your CRA My Account itself will not open: only the CRA can help with that account.

ERR.082 and the request to register as a representative

ERR.082 appears when the CRA thinks you are acting for someone else and asks you to register as a representative. Wealthsimple says not to do that. Its two known causes are a CRA My Account that is too new and a cookie conflict in your browser.

  1. If you signed up for CRA My Account recently, wait until you receive your CRA access code; Wealthsimple says a new account may not have full access before then.
  2. Sign out of CRA My Account in any other open tab.
  3. Clear your browser cookies, or try a different browser.
  4. Run Auto-fill again. If ERR.082 persists, enter your slips by hand and try Auto-fill again in a few days.

Why are my slips missing from Auto-fill?

A slip is missing from Auto-fill because the CRA has not received it from the issuer yet, or has received it but not finished processing it. Employers and banks often mail your copy before they file with the CRA, so holding a paper slip does not mean the CRA has it.

The CRA says it should receive most slips by the end of February and have them processed and available by mid-March. Wealthsimple adds that slips filed on time are usually processed within one to two weeks.

The slip is in CRA My Account but imports blank

Wealthsimple says blank amounts on a slip you can see in CRA My Account mean the CRA has the slip but has not processed it inside its system. Wait a few days and run Auto-fill again. To see what the CRA holds, sign in to CRA My Account and open Tax information slips (T4 and more).

A worked example: if you hold a T3 from a mutual fund in early March, it is normal for Auto-fill to show your T4 and T5 but no T3, because T3 slips are not due until March 30. Filing before then means typing the T3 in yourself.

Wealthsimple Tax cannot import forms? Enter slips by hand

Auto-fill is optional. If a slip will not come through and you have a paper or PDF copy, type it in. You are responsible for reporting all income whether or not a slip is available through Auto-fill.

  1. Use the search box in Wealthsimple Tax to find the slip type, for example T4 or T5.
  2. Add the slip and copy each box number and amount exactly as printed.
  3. If you run Auto-fill later, compare the imported list with your manual entries and remove any slip that now appears twice.
  4. Run Review & Optimize before submitting so any mismatch shows up as an error.

Keep the original slips with your records, as Wealthsimple advises, in case the CRA later asks to see them.

When the problem is not Wealthsimple

Auto-fill draws on the CRA's data, so the same gaps appear in every certified product. If UFile or another program also shows the slip as missing, the cause is timing at the CRA. For a comparison, see how UFile handles the CRA connection, including its note that a computer clock more than five minutes off can void the transfer.

Problems with the CRA service itself are covered on Auto-fill my return not working. If Auto-fill works but the return then fails at submission, go to Wealthsimple Tax not working. Switchers who need last year's balances should read importing from TurboTax into Wealthsimple Tax, and the full product list is on the Canadian tax software hub.

Common questions

Why is my T4 not showing in Wealthsimple Tax Auto-fill?

The CRA has probably not received or processed it yet. T4 slips are due to the CRA by February 28, and the CRA says most slips are available by mid-March, so wait and run Auto-fill again or enter the T4 by hand.

What is ERR.082 in Wealthsimple Tax?

It is a CRA sign-in error that asks you to register as a representative. Wealthsimple says not to register; wait for your CRA access code if your account is new, or sign out of other CRA tabs and clear cookies.

Can I use Auto-fill for my spouse's return in Wealthsimple Tax?

Only if you are authorized as your spouse's CRA representative. Otherwise your spouse runs Auto-fill on their own return while signed in to their own CRA My Account.

Why did Auto-fill import my slip with blank amounts?

Wealthsimple says this means the CRA has the slip but has not processed it. Try again in a few days.

Do I have to use Auto-fill in Wealthsimple Tax?

No. It is optional. You can type every slip yourself, as long as you report all your income.

Does Auto-fill bring in my RRSP deduction limit?

Yes. Wealthsimple lists the RRSP deduction limit, unused contributions, unused tuition and loss carryforwards as available immediately, not tied to slip deadlines.
