Short answer

The latest GenuTax update is GenuTax Standard version 1.92, released April 22, 2026; it prepares returns for 2003 through 2025 and is NETFILE-certified for 2025. How GenuTax updates work each year

A GenuTax update is a full new installer, not a separate program for each year. GenuTax Standard, made by GenuSource Consulting Inc. of Stittsville, Ontario, is one multiyear program: version 1.92 prepares and prints returns for every year from 2003 through 2025 (GenuTax). Each new tax year is added by releasing a new version of that same program.

That design explains most GenuTax problems. If 2025 does not appear in your year list, you are not missing a download for 2025; you are running an older version of GenuTax Standard that was released before 2025 support was added. Installing the latest version brings in the new year and keeps every earlier year.

GenuTax Standard is free, and GenuSource says annual tax updates for future years are free as well. It asks for donations to cover costs but does not require them (GenuTax).

How do I update GenuTax Standard?

To update GenuTax Standard, download the newest installer from the GenuTax Software Update page and run it on the same computer. As of September 19, 2026 the latest update is version 1.92, released on April 22, 2026, and the installer file is named GenuTaxSetupV192.exe (GenuTax, Software Update).

  1. Open GenuTax Standard, choose the Help menu, then About GenuTax Standard, and note the version number.
  2. If it reads 1.92.9605.26107, you already have version 1.92 and no update is waiting.
  3. Otherwise, save your open return and close GenuTax.
  4. Go to genutax.ca, open Software Update, and download the installer for the latest version.
  5. Double-click GenuTaxSetupV192.exe (or the newer file name, once one is released) and follow the prompts.
  6. Start GenuTax from the desktop icon and check About GenuTax Standard again to confirm the new number.

GenuTax update 2026: when will the 2026 tax year be added?

The GenuTax update that adds the 2026 tax year is not yet announced as of September 19, 2026. GenuTax does not publish release dates ahead of time; it posts the new version number and date on its Software Update page when the update is ready (GenuTax, Software Update).

Two outside dates set the limits. The software needs CRA NETFILE certification for the new year before it can send returns, and the CRA publishes a list of certified products each tax year (CRA, Find certified tax software). The CRA must also open NETFILE; it opened February 23, 2026 for 2025 returns, and the 2027 opening date is not yet announced. For the release status of other Canadian programs, see Canadian tax software release dates and when will Wealthsimple Tax be available.

GenuTax not showing 2025: why and how to fix it

GenuTax not showing 2025 means the installed version predates 2025 support. Check Help, About GenuTax Standard. Anything lower than 1.92 is out of date; download version 1.92 and install it over the old one.

  • Downloaded from another site: third-party download sites often host an old version. Use only genutax.ca.
  • Installed on a different computer: each computer needs the update. Check the version on the machine you are actually using.
  • Old desktop shortcut: if you installed to a new location, an old shortcut can still open the earlier version. Start GenuTax from the new icon and check the version number.

Common GenuTax problems and what causes them

Most GenuTax problems come from system requirements or from tax situations the software does not support. The table sets out what GenuSource publishes on its requirements and restrictions pages (GenuTax, System Requirements; GenuTax, Restrictions).

Other unsupported cases include pre- or post-bankruptcy returns, business with a permanent establishment outside your province (Form T2203), and farmers in AgriStability or AgriInvest. GenuTax Standard is approved for personal use only, not for people who prepare returns for others, and handles up to 20 individuals per tax year with no income limit.

NETFILE, ReFILE and Auto-fill years

A version can prepare an older year but still refuse to send it. In version 1.92, NETFILE is available for 2018 to 2025, ReFILE for changes to 2022 to 2025 returns, and Auto-fill my return for 2017 to 2025 (GenuTax). A 2016 return, for example, can be prepared and printed but must be mailed. For Auto-fill failures, see Auto-fill my return not working; for CRA rejection codes, see NETFILE error codes.

Getting help from GenuTax support

GenuTax support works by email or through the Request Support button on genutax.ca, and GenuSource says replies can take up to two business days (48 hours). Support is free, though it asks for a modest donation toward costs (GenuTax, Contact Support). Include your version number from About GenuTax Standard and the exact message you see.

With a deadline close and GenuTax still failing, a second free option can save time. Compare choices in free tax software in Canada, or see Canadian tax software problems for fixes in other programs.

Common questions

How do I know if my GenuTax is up to date?

Open Help, then About GenuTax Standard. If the version is 1.92.9605.26107, you have version 1.92, the latest update released on April 22, 2026.

Is there a GenuTax update for 2026?

Not yet. As of September 19, 2026, the update that adds the 2026 tax year has not been announced; GenuTax posts it on its Software Update page when ready.

Why doesn't GenuTax show the new tax year?

Your installed version is older than the one that added that year. Download the latest installer from genutax.ca and install it; earlier years remain available.

Do I have to pay for GenuTax updates?

No. GenuSource says GenuTax Standard and its annual updates are free, and donations are optional.

Does GenuTax work on a Mac?

No. GenuTax Standard lists only Windows 11, 10, 8.1 and 7 with Service Pack 1 as supported operating systems.

Can GenuTax file my Quebec return?

Only the federal T1. GenuTax does not prepare the Quebec provincial return, which must be filed with Revenu Quebec using other software or paper.
