StudioTax not working: fixes for install, update and licence problems
Short answer
StudioTax not working usually means one of four things: the Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8.1 it depends on is missing, you are still on a preview build that must be updated before filing, Windows Smart App Control is blocking an older installer, or the program is waiting for a licence. StudioTax 2025 runs on Windows 10 and 11, macOS 10.15 or later, iOS and Android.

Why is StudioTax not working?
StudioTax not working is rarely a fault in your return. It is almost always the program's setup: a missing Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8.1, an unsupported Windows version, a preview build that has not been updated, or a licence that has not been activated. StudioTax is an installed desktop program, not a website, so there is no server outage to wait out; the fix is on your own computer (StudioTax).
StudioTax is Canadian software from BHOK IT Consulting. The 2025 edition prepares 2025 returns, which were due April 30, 2026, and it is certified by the CRA for NETFILE, ReFILE, Auto-fill my return and Express Notice of Assessment on Windows, Mac, iOS and Android (StudioTax).
StudioTax 2025 install: what your computer needs
A StudioTax 2025 install on Windows needs Windows 10 or Windows 11 and the Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8.1. StudioTax says that starting with StudioTax 2024 it can no longer support Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 for technical reasons (StudioTax, Windows download). If you are on one of those versions, the current edition is not expected to install or run properly.
| Platform | Supported versions | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | Windows 10 and 11 | Needs .NET Framework 4.8.1 |
| Mac | macOS 10.15 Catalina to 26 Tahoe | English only; no Quebec provincial return |
| iPhone and iPad | Current App Store version | Certified for 2025 |
| Android | Current Google Play version | Certified for 2025 |
You do not need to remove older editions first. StudioTax says every edition can be installed side by side, so StudioTax 2024 and 2025 can live on the same computer (StudioTax, Windows download).
StudioTax error messages and what they mean
Each StudioTax error message below comes from the vendor's own download page or FAQ, with the fix StudioTax gives. Messages about NETFILE rejections are different: they come from the CRA and are covered in StudioTax NETFILE not working.
| What you see | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| There is a problem with this Windows Installer Package. A DLL required for this install to complete could not be run. | Installer lacks permission | Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator |
| Program will not install or start | .NET Framework 4.8.1 missing or damaged | Install .NET 4.8.1 from Microsoft, then run the StudioTax installer again |
| Older installer blocked by Windows | Expired signature on older editions, stopped by Smart App Control | Turn Smart App Control off, then install |
| The display resolution is not set to the standard 96.0 dpi | Windows scaling above 100 percent | Set display scaling to 100 percent so forms draw correctly |
Fixing the .NET Framework 4.8.1 problem
The StudioTax installer tries to download and install .NET 4.8.1 by itself when it is missing, and that step can take a while on a slow connection. If it fails, StudioTax tells you to install .NET 4.8.1 directly from Microsoft's .NET Framework 4.8.1 page, restart, and run the StudioTax installer again (StudioTax, Windows download).
Installing an older year blocked by Smart App Control
People catching up on late returns often hit this. StudioTax notes that older installers carry expired signatures and may be blocked by Windows 11 Smart App Control. Its supported workaround is: open Windows Security, choose App and browser control, open Smart App Control settings and set it to Off. Turning it off lowers a Windows protection, so download older editions only from studiotax.com.
How do I update StudioTax?
You update StudioTax from inside the program with its Check for updates menu item. The StudioTax support page asks every user to confirm they are on the current version this way before contacting support (StudioTax, Support).
- Connect to the internet and open StudioTax.
- Choose Check for updates from the StudioTax menus (the StudioTax support page shows where it sits in the Windows and Mac editions).
- Accept the download and let StudioTax restart.
- Repeat the check just before you NETFILE, because updates can arrive during the season.
- On a Mac, use the same Check for updates menu in the Mac edition.
A StudioTax update keeps you within the same tax year. A new tax year needs a new edition, which StudioTax publishes as a separate download. For expected timing of the edition for 2026 returns, see Canadian tax software release dates.
Is StudioTax asking for a licence? Who has to pay
StudioTax is no longer free for everyone. For the 2025 edition, a licence costs $17.50 and covers up to 10 returns of the same tax year on one computer; you need it before printing or filing. A 2024 licence does not activate StudioTax 2025, but a 2025 licence also activates the 2020 to 2024 editions (StudioTax, Payment).
- No licence needed: total income at line 15000 of $20,000 or less, with lines 11600 and 14700 left out of the test.
- Linked couples: the two returns are tested together against a combined $40,000.
- Northern residents: people living in the Northwest Territories, Yukon or Nunavut use it free.
- Editions 2019 and earlier: free for everyone, no licence.
- Refunds: StudioTax offers 30 days to get your money back if the licence was never activated.
Worked example: a couple with incomes of $18,000 and $25,000 files linked returns. Their combined $43,000 is above $40,000, so a licence is needed even though one spouse is under $20,000 alone. A single filer with $19,500 at line 15000 needs no licence.
StudioTax on a Mac: what works and what does not
StudioTax for Mac runs on macOS 10.15 Catalina through macOS 26 Tahoe, is in English only, and cannot prepare the Quebec provincial return. On Catalina you may not be able to print with the For the government option (StudioTax, Mac download). Editions from 2015 and earlier are 32-bit only and will not run on Catalina or later.
If StudioTax will not open after install on a Mac, check the macOS version under the Apple menu, About This Mac. Quebec residents on a Mac need another program for the TP-1; the Windows, iOS and Android editions hold Revenu Quebec certification for NETFILE.
When StudioTax is the wrong tool
Some returns fail no matter how well StudioTax is installed. It is not certified for non-resident returns or returns that need Form T2203 (multiple jurisdictions) or Form T1273 (farming statement), and it can only import last year's return if that return was made in StudioTax (StudioTax, Restrictions). Returns from another program have to be re-entered by hand.
If one of those limits applies, compare options in free tax software in Canada or look at GenuTax update, a free Windows program. Auto-fill problems inside StudioTax come from the CRA service and are covered in Auto-fill my return not working. For every other program, start at Canadian tax software problems.
Step by step
Check Windows version
Confirm Windows 10 or 11; StudioTax 2024 and later do not support Windows 7, 8 or 8.1.
Install .NET 4.8.1
If StudioTax will not install or start, install Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8.1 and restart.
Run as administrator
Right-click the StudioTax installer and choose Run as administrator.
Check for updates
Open StudioTax and use Check for updates, especially if you installed a preview build.
Activate the licence
Enter a licence for the matching tax year unless your income or residence makes StudioTax free.
Common questions
Why is StudioTax not opening after I install it?
The usual cause is a missing or damaged Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8.1. Install it from Microsoft, restart, and run the StudioTax installer again as an administrator.
Does StudioTax work on Windows 7 or 8?
Not the current editions. StudioTax dropped Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 starting with StudioTax 2024, so the 2025 edition needs Windows 10 or 11.
How do I get the StudioTax update?
Open StudioTax while online and use the Check for updates menu. Run it again right before you NETFILE, especially if you installed a preview version early in the season.
Is StudioTax still free?
Only in some cases. The 2025 edition is free if your total income is $20,000 or less or you live in NT, YT or NU; everyone else pays $17.50 per licence for up to 10 returns of one tax year.
Can StudioTax import my TurboTax or UFile return?
No. StudioTax only imports returns created in StudioTax, so last year's figures from another program must be entered manually.
Can I do my Quebec return in StudioTax for Mac?
No. The Mac edition does not support the Quebec TP-1. The Windows, iOS and Android editions are certified by Revenu Quebec for NETFILE.
