UFile error codes: what each message means and how to fix it
Short answer
Most UFile error codes are not UFile's own: they are rejection codes the CRA sends back after UFile transmits your return through NETFILE, along with the CRA's description. UFile's own checks appear earlier, in the Review tab, before you can reach NETFILE. Read the description with each number, because the same number can mean different things in the CRA's NETFILE and EFILE lists.

What do UFile error codes mean?
A UFile error code is either a check inside UFile that stops you before sending, or a code the CRA returns after UFile sends the return. UFile's help makes the split plain: UFile is the software that prepares your return, while NETFILE is a separate government service that receives it.
When you select File my return now on the NETFILE tab, UFile builds a .ws file, the electronic version of your return, and sends it to the CRA. If the file passes, a confirmation number comes back within minutes. If not, the CRA returns a code and a description, and UFile displays them.
Is a UFile error the same as a NETFILE error?
Usually, yes: a numbered code shown after transmission is a NETFILE error from the CRA, and the same return would get the same code in any certified product. A message that stops you on the NETFILE tab saying you are not eligible is a UFile check, and the fix is to open the Review tab and clear the errors it lists.
The numbering trap is that the CRA publishes a separate error list for EFILE, the channel paid preparers use, in chapter 2 of guide RC4018. Numbers there do not always match what NETFILE returns to consumer software. Code 15 is the clearest case, shown below.
Common UFile errors and fixes
Error 2130: immigration date missing
The CRA holds a current-year immigration date for you, but the return has none. In UFile, open Interview setup, tick the immigrant, emigrant or non-resident box, then open the new Immigrant, emigrant, non-resident page and choose the option saying you immigrated that year. Enter your world income details; leave fields blank rather than typing $0 where you had no income.
Error 2252: Home Buyers' Plan repayment mismatch
The HBP repayment on your return differs from the amount on the CRA's file. Compare it with the Home Buyers' Plan Statement of Account that came with your last notice of assessment, correct the entry, and send once more.
Authentication failed or access code mismatch
The CRA could not match your SIN and date of birth, or the optional NETFILE access code you typed does not match its records. Check both against your last notice of assessment. If the access code is the problem, you can remove it; it is optional.
UFile error 90308
Error 90308 was a CRA-side problem in the 2025 season tied to CPP contributions on Schedule 8. Tax software developer TaxCycle reported the CRA's description: it hit returns with an amount on line 22200, nothing on line 31000 and pensionable earnings over $68,500. Wealthsimple reports the CRA fixed it with Schedule 8 updates on June 3, 2025, and offered interest and penalty relief to people who tried to NETFILE by April 30 and got this error. If you still see 90308, install the latest UFile update and try once more.
UFile rejected codes 15, 49, 50 and 84
UFile error 15
Code 15 means two different things depending on the list. Wealthsimple quotes the CRA's NETFILE message for result code 15 as your account being locked. In the CRA's EFILE chapter, error 15 instead means the return is flagged as pre-bankruptcy and selected financial data statements must be deleted. For a UFile user, the locked-account meaning is far more likely. See NETFILE error code 15.
UFile error 49 and 50: address lines
In the CRA's EFILE list, error 49 means the care of line in your address contains an invalid character, and error 50 covers the street address line or an invalid US ZIP code. Retype the address with plain letters and numbers, and leave the care of line empty unless you need it. We found no UFile explanation for a code shown as 49 R, so go by the description displayed with it.
UFile error 84: spouse's name
The CRA's EFILE chapter defines error 84 as a spouse or common-law partner's name containing invalid characters or formatting, such as periods, slashes or ampersands. Check your spouse's name in the Identification section. More detail is on NETFILE error code 84.
When to paper file instead
Some codes cannot be cleared by editing. Stop retrying and mail the return when:
- You have had five rejections. UFile says the CRA then blocks NETFILE for you, in every product, until the CRA lifts the block.
- The code concerns a pre-bankruptcy return with no bankruptcy date on the CRA file, which the EFILE list numbers as error 35.
- Your return falls under a NETFILE restriction, such as more than six sets of financial statements.
- The return was already accepted. Sending it again only produces another error; use ReFILE for changes once your notice of assessment is issued.
To print, go to step 4 in UFile ONLINE and choose Download PDF or Federal Print; in UFile for Windows use the print icon in the same step. If UFile first showed a confirmation and then a rejected message, check the status in CRA My Account before doing anything else.
Loading, sign-in and connection problems are on UFile not working; install failures are on UFile not installing. StudioTax users will find matching guidance on StudioTax not working, and every certified product is listed on the Canadian tax software hub.
Common questions
Where do I see the error list in UFile before filing?
Open the Review tab. If the NETFILE tab says you are ineligible, the reasons are listed there, and you must fix them before UFile will transmit.
Why does UFile say my return was rejected after I got a confirmation number?
UFile advises checking the return's status in CRA My Account before resending. Sending an already accepted return again only produces another error.
Does UFile error 15 mean my NETFILE account is locked?
Usually. For NETFILE, the CRA uses result code 15 for a locked account; the pre-bankruptcy meaning belongs to the separate EFILE list used by preparers.
Is error 90308 still a problem?
Wealthsimple reports that the CRA resolved 90308 with Schedule 8 updates on June 3, 2025. Update UFile and try once; if it repeats, contact UFile.
Can I fix a UFile error code and resend right away?
Yes, for data errors such as an address, HBP or immigration date mismatch. Send once per correction, since five rejections will block NETFILE.
