TurboTax vs H&R Block: how the two compare on the things you can check

Short answer

In the TurboTax vs H&R Block choice, neither is better for everyone. H&R Block Free Online covers unemployment income on Form 1099-G, which TurboTax Free Edition excludes, and H&R Block's desktop software still listed Windows 10 support in September 2026, while TurboTax Desktop 2025 needs Windows 11. TurboTax Desktop files up to five federal returns.

Is TurboTax or H&R Block better?

TurboTax vs H&R Block comes down to three checkable facts: which free tier covers your forms, which desktop edition runs on your computer, and whether you want in-person help nearby. Both companies sell browser-based and downloadable products, both calculate federal tax under the same IRS rules, and both charge more as your return adds schedules.

H&R Block tends to fit people who collected unemployment, still run Windows 10 or want a physical office to walk into. TurboTax tends to fit people who already have several years of TurboTax files, use a Windows 11 PC or recent Mac, or prepare returns for relatives on one computer. Anything beyond that is preference in interview style.

H&R Block vs TurboTax free editions

Both free tiers are built around a simple Form 1040, but they draw the line in different places. The table uses each company's own free-tier page as checked in September 2026 for tax year 2025 returns.

H&R Block also lists Form 1098-T and Form 8863 for education credits among its free forms. Intuit's free list does not name them, and says credits and deductions claimed on other forms fall outside the Free Edition. If your only extra item is a tuition credit, check both carts before you commit.

H&R Block vs TurboTax software: desktop system requirements

The biggest practical gap between the downloadable products is Windows 10. Intuit says TurboTax Desktop 2025 cannot be used on Windows 10, while H&R Block's system requirements page listed Windows 10 or higher for its consumer tax software when we checked on September 18, 2026.

Requirements for the tax year 2026 editions of both products are not yet announced. Intuit and H&R Block usually post them in the fall, and a Windows 10 PC that works in 2026 may not qualify in 2027. If you are on Windows 10 and want TurboTax, the online product in a browser is Intuit's own suggested route; see TurboTax Online vs Desktop.

Importing last year's return and switching brands

Switching from TurboTax to H&R Block is well supported. H&R Block's downloadable software can read a TurboTax desktop .tax file or a PDF of last year's Form 1040, and H&R Block Online offers a Direct Import option tied to your TurboTax account. Encrypted or password-protected TurboTax files are the usual reason that import fails; the full procedure is on import TurboTax to H&R Block.

Going the other way, TurboTax brings in prior-year data from its own files and offers form imports from financial institutions and photos of forms taken on a phone. Whichever brand you leave, save a PDF of the filed return first. You will need last year's adjusted gross income to sign the next e-filed return.

How many returns can you file with each?

TurboTax Online allows one federal return per Intuit account, with any number of state returns. TurboTax Desktop allows up to five federal returns with up to three state returns each, and Intuit caps any one email address at five accounts and five federal returns across its products.

The IRS separately limits consumer software to five e-filed federal returns per email address or phone number, which applies to H&R Block as well. H&R Block does not publish a per-license count on the pages we could check, so confirm it on its support site before buying for a household. Neither license covers paid preparation for clients.

Help options: experts, offices and self-service

Both companies sell tiers with live help from a tax expert and a full-service option where an expert prepares the return. The difference is that H&R Block also runs retail tax offices, so you can move from software to a face-to-face appointment with the same company. TurboTax's expert help is delivered remotely.

For free self-service, TurboTax runs the TurboTax Support community and help articles, and H&R Block runs its Tax Center support pages. When the software itself misbehaves, our troubleshooting hubs for TurboTax Online and H&R Block sort problems by symptom.

Which is cheaper, TurboTax or H&R Block?

The cheaper product is the one whose free or lowest tier covers all of your forms, and that answer changes by return. Both companies change list prices during the season and run discounts, so a price quoted in a review or forum post may already be out of date.

  1. List your forms: W-2, 1099-G, 1099-INT, 1099-B, 1098, 1098-T, Schedule C and so on.
  2. Compare each list against the two free tiers in the table above.
  3. If both require a paid tier, enter your data in one product and view the price at checkout before paying.
  4. Add the state return fee and any add-ons such as audit support before comparing totals.

What TurboTax vs HR Block Reddit threads usually miss

Forum debates often compare a price one person paid with a price another person paid for a different return in a different year. The durable differences are the ones in this article: free-tier forms, operating system support, import paths and return limits. If a thread claims a feature exists, confirm it on the vendor's current help page.

Common questions

Is H&R Block free if I got unemployment?

H&R Block Free Online lists unemployment income on Form 1099-G as included for tax year 2025. TurboTax Free Edition lists it as not included.

H&R Block's system requirements page listed Windows 10 or higher when checked in September 2026. Requirements for the tax year 2026 edition are not yet announced.

Are TurboTax and H&R Block IRS Free File partners?

No. The IRS listed 8 Free File partners in January 2026: 1040Now, Drake (1040.com), ezTaxReturn.com, FileYourTaxes.com, On-Line Taxes, TaxAct, TaxHawk (FreeTaxUSA) and TaxSlayer.
