Intuit Assist in TurboTax: what it does

Short answer

Intuit Assist is the generative-AI layer inside TurboTax. Intuit describes it as an AI capability that gives personalised recommendations, and in the product it builds a tax checklist from your answers, reads uploaded documents into the return, suggests deductions and checks for mistakes as you go. It does not file for you: you review and sign the return.

What is Intuit Assist?

Intuit Assist is the name Intuit gives to the AI running across its consumer products, including TurboTax. Intuit's own description is "an AI-powered capability that provides personalized, intelligent recommendations to help you make smart financial decisions with less work and complete confidence".

Inside TurboTax it is not a separate screen you open. It runs behind the interview, which is why people often search for it after seeing a suggestion appear rather than after choosing to use it.

What does Intuit Assist do in TurboTax?

Intuit lists four jobs on its support page, and they line up with what you see in the product.

  • Builds a personalised tax checklist from what you tell it about your situation at the start.
  • Reads uploaded documents and writes the figures into the return. Intuit has said the AI reads and interprets the data for roughly 90% of forms.
  • Suggests deductions and credits, drawing on what filers in comparable situations claimed.
  • Checks the return for mistakes as you work, rather than only at the end.

For the 2026 product Intuit added narrower agents on top of that: a cost-basis adjustment assistant for investment sales, a business-expense assistant that can take an unstructured spreadsheet and categorise it, an income-qualification assistant, and a concierge that routes you to a human expert suited to your return.

Does Intuit Assist file my return for me?

No. The AI prepares and checks; the filing step is still yours. Intuit's position is that the human remains the ultimate decision-maker, and the signature on the return carries the same legal weight it always did.

Where should you check its work?

Document reading is the strongest part and needs the least checking, though it is still worth comparing the figures on screen against the paper form. The parts that deserve a second look are the ones where the assistant is making a judgement rather than copying a number.

How much checking each job needs
What it doesRiskWhat to verify
Reads a W-2 or 1099LowBox-by-box against the form
Explains a ruleMediumThe form instructions for the year
Suggests a deductionHighThat you actually meet the test
Categorises business expensesHighEach category against your records

Deduction prompts are the ones people over-trust. A suggestion means filers like you claimed something; it does not mean you qualify. That distinction matters more in the 2027 filing season than it used to, because the Schedule 1-A deductions for tips, overtime, car-loan interest and seniors each carry their own caps and phase-outs.

Is Intuit Assist worth paying for?

It is not a separate purchase, so the real question is whether TurboTax is worth its price against the alternatives, not whether the AI is. H&R Block includes its own assistant with paid online products and generally prices below TurboTax; that comparison is on H&R Block AI Tax Assist and in choosing tax software.

If you file on TurboTax Desktop rather than online, note the separate product change for the 2027 season: the desktop program now requires Windows 11 and is no longer sold on CD.

What does Intuit Assist do with your data?

It works on the tax data and documents you upload to TurboTax. That is the same information you were already handing the program, so using the assistant does not widen what Intuit holds about your return. What changes is that the data is processed by an AI model as well as by the calculation engine.

Intuit publishes its position on privacy and security for the AI features on its own support pages, and that is the document to read if this matters to you rather than a summary on any third-party site, including this one.

The practical difference from a general chatbot is worth stating plainly: pasting a tax slip into ChatGPT sends it somewhere new. Uploading the same slip to TurboTax sends it where your return already lives.

What if the assistant gives you an answer you doubt?

Treat it as a prompt to check, and check in the form instructions for the tax year you are filing rather than in a general search.

  1. Note the exact claim, including any figure or threshold.
  2. Find the form or schedule it belongs to.
  3. Open the IRS instructions for that form for the correct tax year.
  4. If the instructions do not support the claim, do not enter it.
  5. If your return is complicated enough that the instructions do not settle it, use the concierge hand-off to a human expert.

This sounds laborious and usually is not. Most doubts resolve in a couple of minutes, and the ones that do not are exactly the ones worth the time.

Common questions

What is Intuit Assist in TurboTax?

It is the generative-AI layer inside TurboTax. It builds a personalised checklist, reads uploaded tax documents into the return, suggests deductions and credits, and checks the return for mistakes while you work.

Does Intuit Assist cost extra?

No. It is part of the product and runs across all TurboTax tiers rather than being sold as an add-on.

Can I turn Intuit Assist off?

It is built into the interview rather than offered as a toggle, so you cannot remove it from the flow. You can ignore its suggestions; nothing it proposes reaches the return until you accept it.

Does Intuit Assist see my tax documents?

Yes. Reading uploaded documents is one of its main jobs, which is how it fills in figures for you. That is the same data you were already giving TurboTax.

Is Intuit Assist accurate?

It is reliable at reading forms and much less reliable at judgement calls, particularly on rules that changed recently. Treat a deduction suggestion as a prompt to check the rule, not as confirmation that you qualify.
