> The TurboTax senior deduction has no entry screen of its own. TurboTax reads the birth dates in My Info, checks Social Security numbers, filing status and income, then fills in Part V of Schedule 1-A and carries the total to Form 1040 line 13b. If it is missing, the cause is usually a birth date, a married filing separately status, or income above the phase-out range.

## Key facts

- Where it is calculated: Schedule 1-A, Part V (tax year 2025)
- Where it lands on the return: Form 1040 or 1040-SR, line 13b
- Triggered by: Birth date entered in My Info
- Years covered by the law: 2025 through 2028, per the IRS

## Where is the senior deduction on TurboTax

The TurboTax senior deduction, sometimes called the senior bonus deduction, is the enhanced deduction for seniors on the new Schedule 1-A. You will not find a screen asking you to type it in. TurboTax works it out in the background from answers you already gave, which is why people searching the deduction section come up empty.

The IRS says the enhanced deduction applies to people age 65 or older for tax years 2025 through 2028, and that it is claimed whether you itemize or take the standard deduction. On the 2025 form it is figured in Part V of Schedule 1-A, then added with any tips, overtime and car loan interest amounts in Part VI and carried to Form 1040 or 1040-SR, line 13b.

Deduction amounts and income rules are covered in depth by IRS guidance; this page stays with how TurboTax handles the entries and how to confirm the result.

## How TurboTax decides you qualify for the enhanced senior deduction

The 2025 Schedule 1-A asks four things for each person, and TurboTax answers them from your interview entries. If any answer is wrong in the software, the deduction is wrong on the return.

| Form test | Where TurboTax takes it from |
| --- | --- |
| Born before January 2, 1961 | Date of birth in My Info (Personal Info) |
| Valid Social Security number | SSN entered for you and your spouse |
| Married filers must file jointly | Filing status chosen in My Info |
| Modified AGI for the phase-out (line 3) | Income and adjustments across the return |

Schedule 1-A Part V tests and where TurboTax gets each answer (tax year 2025)

### The phase-out TurboTax applies

Part V starts from $6,000 per eligible person. It subtracts 6% of the amount by which modified AGI exceeds $75,000, or $150,000 for a joint return. A single filer age 67 with modified AGI of $95,000 is $20,000 over, so the reduction is $1,200 and the deduction is $4,800. At $175,000 of modified AGI the same filer's reduction reaches $6,000 and the deduction is zero.

| Filer | Modified AGI | Reduction at 6% | Deduction |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Single, age 67 | $60,000 | $0 | $6,000 |
| Single, age 67 | $95,000 | $1,200 | $4,800 |
| Joint, both 65 or older | $170,000 | $1,200 each | $9,600 total |
| Joint, one spouse 65 or older | $120,000 | $0 | $6,000 |

## How to check the senior deduction in TurboTax Online

Intuit community answers point to two places to confirm the amount in TurboTax Online. Neither changes the return; they only show what is on it.

1. Open your return and select Tools in the left menu, then View Tax Summary. Look for the Additional Deductions (Schedule 1-A) line.
2. For more detail, go back to the left menu and, under Federal, choose Preview my 1040. Scroll to line 13b.
3. Line 13b includes every Schedule 1-A deduction, so if you also claimed tips or overtime, subtract those to see the senior share.
4. In TurboTax Desktop, switch to Forms mode and open Schedule 1-A to see Part V line by line.

## Why the TurboTax senior deduction may be missing

When line 13b shows nothing or less than you expected, check these causes in order. Most are entry problems you can fix in a few minutes.

- **Birth date missing or mistyped.** A year typed as 1966 instead of 1956 removes the deduction. Reopen My Info and check each date.
- **Married filing separately.** Schedule 1-A says married people must file jointly to claim it. TurboTax will not apply it on a separate return.
- **Income over the range.** Modified AGI above $75,000 single or $150,000 joint reduces the amount, and enough income removes it.
- **No valid SSN.** A filer using an ITIN, or an SSN field left blank, fails the Social Security number test.
- **Outdated software.** Schedule 1-A was new for 2025. In Desktop, install updates; in Online, sign out and back in to load current forms.
- **Looking in the wrong place.** The deduction is not in the standard deduction figure; it sits on line 13b.

> **Do not add it by hand:** Typing the amount somewhere else, for example as an other deduction, would count it twice once the software also calculates it. Fix the underlying entry instead.

## Married filers and both spouses

On a joint return, Schedule 1-A has one line for you (36a) and one for your spouse (36b). Each line is filled only if that person passes the birth date and SSN tests, so a couple where only one spouse is 65 or older gets one amount. The phase-out uses the couple's combined modified AGI.

The most common joint-return slip is a spouse's birth date left blank because the spouse was added late in the interview. Open My Info, select the spouse and fill every field. The older-age box for the regular additional standard deduction on Form 1040 draws on the same birth dates, so fixing the date corrects both.

## The senior deduction for tax year 2026 returns

The IRS describes the enhanced deduction as running through tax year 2028, so it should appear again on returns filed in the 2027 season. The 2026 version of Schedule 1-A and the software's 2026 screens are not yet announced; the IRS usually confirms season details in January. Check the birth date test on the new form rather than reusing the 2025 date.

The same Schedule 1-A holds the other new deductions, handled on separate screens: see [no tax on tips in TurboTax](https://taxsoftwaredesk.com/turbotax-online/no-tax-on-tips-turbotax) and [the overtime deduction in TurboTax](https://taxsoftwaredesk.com/turbotax-online/turbotax-overtime-deduction). ## Common questions

### Where is the senior deduction in TurboTax?

It is calculated on Schedule 1-A, Part V, and carried to Form 1040 line 13b. In TurboTax Online, check Tools, then View Tax Summary, or Preview my 1040.

### Does TurboTax add the senior deduction automatically?

Yes. TurboTax fills it in from your birth date, SSN, filing status and income. There is no separate entry screen for it.

### Why is my enhanced senior deduction zero in TurboTax?

Check the birth date in My Info, your filing status and your income. Married filing separately and high modified AGI both reduce it to zero on the 2025 form.

### Is the senior bonus deduction the same as the extra standard deduction for age 65?

No. The IRS says the enhanced deduction is in addition to the existing higher standard deduction for people 65 and older. Both depend on the birth date you enter.

### Can I get the senior deduction if I itemize in TurboTax?

Yes. The IRS says Schedule 1-A deductions are available whether you itemize or take the standard deduction.
