> For no tax on tips in TurboTax, you do not look for a separate deduction screen. Enter your W-2 with tips in box 7 (or in box 14 labeled as reported tips), or your 1099 tips under Self-Employment, then answer the follow-up questions. TurboTax decides eligibility and fills in Schedule 1-A Part II, which carries to Form 1040 line 13b.

## Key facts

- Form that claims the deduction: Schedule 1-A, Part II (No Tax on Tips)
- Where the total lands (tax year 2025): Form 1040, line 13b
- W-2 box TurboTax reads first: Box 7, Social Security tips
- New for 2026 W-2s: Box 12 code TP and box 14b occupation code

## Does TurboTax do no tax on tips? Yes, through Schedule 1-A

TurboTax supports the no tax on tips deduction for tax year 2025, the first year of the rule. The IRS created Schedule 1-A for it, and Part II of that schedule is the tips section. TurboTax does not show Schedule 1-A as a topic you open yourself; it builds the schedule from your income entries and your answers to a few questions.

That design is why people say they cannot find the no tax on tips screen in TurboTax. The questions only appear after the software sees tips on a W-2 or on a self-employment entry. Enter the income correctly and the deduction follows.

To qualify, the IRS says the tips must be voluntary cash or charged tips received in an occupation on its tipped occupations list, you need a Social Security number valid for employment, and married couples must file jointly. You can claim it whether you itemize or take the standard deduction.

## How to claim no tax on tips in TurboTax from a W-2

Intuit's help article for the tips deduction splits W-2 entries into four situations. Find yours in the table, then follow the steps below it.

| Where the tips appear | What to enter | Screen that follows |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Box 7 (and possibly box 8) | Copy boxes exactly as printed | Let's check for other situations, then tip questions |
| Box 14 with a tips label | Enter the box 14 line as printed | Review and complete your box 14 info: choose Reported tips (not railroad tips) |
| Included in box 1, not shown separately | Enter the W-2 as printed | Let's check for other situations: tick Tips included in box 1 of my W-2, but not in boxes 7 or 14 |
| Tips you never reported to your employer | Enter the W-2 as printed | Let's check for other situations: tick Tips not reported on my W-2 |

Where your tips are on the W-2 and what to do in TurboTax

1. Open Federal, then Income, then the W-2 topic, and add or edit the W-2 from the job where you earned tips.
2. If you imported the W-2, compare every box with the paper or PDF copy. Imports sometimes drop box 14 lines.
3. Select Continue after the last W-2 screen. Do not skip the Let's check for other situations screen; that is where the tip boxes live.
4. Answer the questions about your job and your tips. TurboTax uses them to decide whether the tips qualify.

> **Unreported tips come first:** If you choose Tips not reported on my W-2, TurboTax first walks you through reporting that income, which adds Social Security and Medicare tax on those tips. Only tips reported on a W-2, 1099 or Form 4137 can count toward the deduction.

## TurboTax no tax on tips with a 1099

Self-employed workers who receive tips, such as rideshare or delivery drivers and independent salon workers, claim them through the business section instead of the W-2 section.

1. Go to Income, then the Self-Employment topic, and answer yes to the self-employment income questions.
2. Enter your 1099-NEC, 1099-MISC or 1099-K as part of that business.
3. On the screen titled Let's check if you can deduct any tips, select yes and enter the tip amount from the form.

Intuit notes a limit here: tips that are not included in the gross income box of a 1099 are not currently eligible for the deduction in TurboTax. The IRS also caps a self-employed person's tips deduction at the net income of the business that earned the tips, so a loss in that business can reduce or remove it. Payment-app forms have their own quirks, covered in the Form 1099-K in TurboTax guide.

## Does TurboTax apply the tips deduction automatically? When the screen does not appear

TurboTax applies it automatically only after the tips are entered and the questions answered. If the deduction is missing, work through these checks in order.

- Box 7 is blank on your TurboTax entry but not on your paper W-2. Re-enter the amount.
- Your tips are in box 14 but the category was left blank or set to Other. Change it to Reported tips (not railroad tips).
- You skipped the Let's check for other situations screen. Edit the W-2 and click through to it again.
- You are married and chose Married Filing Separately. The deduction requires a joint return.
- Your job is not on the IRS tipped occupations list, based on your answers.
- Your modified adjusted gross income is high enough that the deduction phases out.

If the screens themselves will not load or keep repeating, that is a software issue rather than an eligibility issue; see [TurboTax stuck in a loop](https://taxsoftwaredesk.com/turbotax-online/turbotax-stuck-in-loop) or the [TurboTax not working overview](https://taxsoftwaredesk.com/turbotax-online).

## Checking Schedule 1-A in TurboTax before you file

Confirm the deduction on the forms rather than trusting the running refund figure. In TurboTax Online, open Tax Tools, then Tools, then View Tax Summary, and use Preview my 1040 in the left menu to see Form 1040. To see Schedule 1-A itself, use Print Center and Print, save or preview this year's return; Intuit may ask you to register or pay first. In TurboTax Desktop, open the schedule in Forms mode.

Here is a worked example. A restaurant server's W-2 shows $38,000 in box 1, which includes $14,200 of reported tips shown in box 7. She files single, her job is on the tipped occupations list and her income is below the phase-out level. TurboTax should show $14,200 in Schedule 1-A Part II and the same amount, plus any other Schedule 1-A deductions, on Form 1040 line 13b. Her box 1 wages stay at $38,000; the deduction lowers taxable income, not reported wages, and Social Security and Medicare tax on the tips is unchanged.

> **Limits and eligibility rules:** This page covers where to enter tips in the software. For the full rules on the $25,000 cap, the income phase-out and the occupation list, see the [no tax on tips deduction guide](https://taxbracketsdesk.com/new-tax-law/no-tax-on-tips-deduction) on our sister site Tax Brackets Desk.

## What changes for 2026 W-2s in the 2027 season

For tax year 2025, employers were not required to separate qualified tips on the W-2, which is why TurboTax had to ask so many follow-up questions. The IRS's 2026 W-2 instructions add box 12 code TP for the total cash tips reported to the employer, and new box 14b for up to two Treasury Tipped Occupation Codes.

Those codes should make the entry simpler for 2026 returns filed in 2027. How the tax year 2026 TurboTax screens will read is not yet announced; Intuit usually releases new editions in late fall. When your 2026 W-2 arrives, check box 12 for code TP and box 14b before you start, and enter both exactly as printed. ## Step by step

1. **Enter the W-2 or 1099.** Add the form under Income, copying every box exactly, including box 7 and box 14.
2. **Label box 14 tips.** On Review and complete your box 14 info, choose Reported tips (not railroad tips).
3. **Answer the other-situations screen.** Tick the box that matches where your tips appear, if they are not in box 7.
4. **Answer the job questions.** Describe your occupation and tips so TurboTax can check eligibility.
5. **Check the forms.** Confirm the amount on Schedule 1-A Part II and Form 1040 line 13b.

## Common questions

### Where do I enter tips for the new deduction in TurboTax?

In the W-2 topic under Income, with tips in box 7 or in box 14 marked as Reported tips (not railroad tips). For self-employment tips, use the Self-Employment topic and the Let's check if you can deduct any tips screen.

### Does TurboTax apply the tips deduction automatically?

Yes, once the tips are entered and you answer the follow-up questions. TurboTax then completes Schedule 1-A Part II and carries the total to Form 1040 line 13b.

### What if my W-2 does not show tips separately?

Enter the W-2 as printed, then on the Let's check for other situations screen tick Tips included in box 1 of my W-2, but not in boxes 7 or 14, and answer the questions that follow.

### Can I claim no tax on tips in TurboTax if I file married filing separately?

No. The IRS requires married taxpayers to file jointly to claim the tips deduction, so TurboTax will not allow it on a separate return.

### Why doesn't TurboTax count the tips on my 1099-K?

Intuit says tips not included in the gross income box of a 1099 are not currently eligible. The deduction is also limited to the net profit of the business that earned the tips.

### Do I still pay Social Security tax on tips claimed with Schedule 1-A?

Yes. The deduction reduces income tax only. Social Security and Medicare taxes on tips still apply.
