> Most TurboTax installation problems come from three things: a PC that does not meet the 2025 edition's requirements (Windows 11 64-bit, admin rights, room for .NET 4.8), a download that was corrupted on the way in, or security software blocking the installer. Confirm requirements, delete the old file, redownload from Intuit, and install with antivirus paused. A loop of restart prompts has its own fix.

## Key facts

- Where to download: Intuit's install page (InstallTurboTax.com)
- Disk space needed: 1 GB, plus up to 4.5 GB if .NET 4.8 is missing
- Computers per 2025 license: Up to 5, per Intuit's license agreement
- Windows version needed: Windows 11, 64-bit

## Check requirements before you install TurboTax Desktop on Windows

Many TurboTax installation problems are settled before the installer ever runs. If the PC cannot run the edition, the installer may stop, refuse to continue, or finish and then produce a program that will not start. A two-minute check saves a wasted afternoon.

Intuit's requirements for TurboTax Desktop 2025 on Windows are Windows 11 (64-bit), administrator rights, 4 GB of RAM or more recommended, and 1 GB of disk space. If Microsoft .NET 4.8 is not already on the PC, add up to 4.5 GB more. The Visual C++ 2022 Redistributable comes bundled with the installer, so you do not need to fetch it separately.

If you are unsure what Windows you have, [the TurboTax Windows 11 requirement page](https://taxsoftwaredesk.com/turbotax-desktop/turbotax-windows-11-requirement) shows how to check in under a minute. Still on Windows 10? Go to [TurboTax on Windows 10](https://taxsoftwaredesk.com/turbotax-desktop/turbotax-windows-10-options) first, because the 2025 edition will not install and run there.

## TurboTax won't download: get the file from Intuit only

Intuit points people to its own install page, InstallTurboTax.com, for the desktop download. After you buy, you sign in there with the Intuit account used for the purchase and download the installer for your operating system. Avoid copies from file-sharing sites or third-party download portals.

### TurboTax desktop not downloading at all

- Try a different browser, or clear the current browser's cache and sign in again.
- Check the browser's downloads list: some browsers hold executable files for a safety check and wait for you to choose Keep.
- Switch off a VPN or ad blocker for the download, since either can interrupt the connection.
- Make sure the drive has enough free space before starting the download.

If a download finished but the installer fails, assume the file is damaged. Intuit notes that corruption can happen during download. Delete the file from your Downloads folder, empty the Recycle Bin, and download a fresh copy rather than rerunning the old one.

## TurboTax installer not working: freezes or loops

An installer that freezes partway, or one that keeps asking you to restart and then starts over, points to a Windows component problem rather than a TurboTax problem. Intuit's install checklist runs in this order.

1. Run the Windows System File Checker to repair corrupted system files: open Command Prompt as administrator and run sfc /scannow, then restart.
2. Delete the downloaded installer and download it again from Intuit's install page.
3. Restart the computer in Selective Startup, which loads Windows without most third-party startup programs, then run the installer.
4. If none of that works, try the installation on a different computer to confirm whether the problem is the PC.

### The installer keeps asking you to restart

For repeated restart prompts, Intuit's fix is specific: uninstall TurboTax, uninstall the Microsoft Visual C++ programs listed in Installed apps, then reinstall TurboTax. The TurboTax installer then puts back the Visual C++ package it needs. If the loop continues after that, Intuit says the Windows installation itself may need repair.

### The installer shows a fatal error

A message reading A fatal error occurred during installation is error 1603. It comes from the Microsoft .NET Framework installer, so the fix runs through Windows Update and .NET repair rather than TurboTax. See [TurboTax error 1603](https://taxsoftwaredesk.com/turbotax-errors/turbotax-error-1603).

## Antivirus and permissions

Security software can delete or lock files the installer is writing, which causes failures that look random. Intuit recommends turning off antivirus and Windows Defender temporarily while installing, then turning them back on and adding TurboTax Desktop to the allowed apps list.

Permissions matter just as much. Sign in to Windows with an administrator account before you run the installer, and right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator. If the program was partly installed before, Intuit also suggests checking that your user has Write set to Allow on each folder under C:\Program Files\TurboTax.

> **Turn protection back on:** Pausing antivirus is only for the few minutes the installer runs. Turn it back on as soon as setup finishes, before you browse the web or open email.

## Can I install TurboTax on a second computer?

Yes, within limits. Intuit's help article says TurboTax 2025 software can be installed, authenticated and activated on up to 5 different computers under its end user license agreement. Download the installer on the second computer from Intuit's install page and sign in with the same Intuit account used for the purchase.

Installing the program on a second machine does not move your return. Your work is in the .tax2025 file on the first computer, so copy that file across if you want to keep working on the new one. The steps are on transferring TurboTax to a new computer.

## Step by step

1. **Confirm requirements.** Check for Windows 11 64-bit, admin rights and enough disk space.
2. **Redownload.** Delete the old installer and download a fresh one from Intuit's install page.
3. **Pause security software.** Temporarily turn off antivirus while installing, then turn it back on.
4. **Repair Windows files.** Run sfc /scannow and restart in Selective Startup if the installer still fails.
5. **Fix restart loops.** Uninstall TurboTax and the Visual C++ programs, then reinstall TurboTax.

## Common questions

### Why won't TurboTax install?

Common causes are a PC below the requirements (the 2025 edition needs Windows 11 64-bit and admin rights), a corrupted download, antivirus software blocking files, or a damaged .NET Framework, which shows up as error 1603.

### How do I download TurboTax Desktop again?

Go to Intuit's install page, InstallTurboTax.com, sign in with the Intuit account you bought it with, and download the installer again. Delete the old installer file first so you do not rerun a damaged copy.

### Can I install TurboTax on a second computer?

Intuit says TurboTax 2025 can be installed, authenticated and activated on up to 5 computers under its license agreement. Your return file does not move automatically; copy the .tax2025 file across yourself.

### Why does the TurboTax installer keep asking me to restart?

Intuit links this to the Microsoft Visual C++ packages. Uninstall TurboTax, uninstall the Visual C++ programs, then reinstall TurboTax so it installs the version it needs.

### How much space does TurboTax Desktop need to install?

Intuit lists 1 GB for TurboTax Desktop 2025 on Windows, plus up to 4.5 GB for Microsoft .NET 4.8 if it is not already installed.
