> To install TurboTax Canada Desktop, download the installer for your product from Intuit Canada's Desktop downloads page, run the .exe file, then sign in to an Intuit Account and enter your 16-digit licence code. Desktop is Windows only. Intuit Canada allows installs on up to 3 computers you own, and recommends Windows 11 for the tax year 2025 edition.

## Key facts

- Platform: Windows only (Intuit Canada)
- Recommended OS, tax year 2025: Windows 11
- Windows 10, tax year 2025: Canadian edition still runs (Intuit, August 19, 2025)
- Computers per licence: Up to 3 that you own
- Tax year 2026 requirements: Not yet announced (usually published in the fall)

## How do I install TurboTax Canada Desktop?

You install TurboTax Canada Desktop in three stages: download, install, activate. Intuit Canada's help article lists them in that order ([Intuit Canada, How do I install TurboTax Desktop?](https://turbotax.community.intuit.ca/turbotax-support/en-ca/help-article/install-products/understanding-turbotax-product-licence-code/L7Krevtot_CA_en_CA)). There are no CDs to insert; the program is delivered as a download.

1. Go to the TurboTax Desktop downloads page on turbotax.intuit.ca and select Download beside the product you bought, such as Standard or Premier.
2. Find the downloaded .exe file, usually in your Downloads folder.
3. Right-click it and choose Run as administrator, then follow the installer screens.
4. When the program opens, sign in to your Intuit Account or create one.
5. Enter your 16-digit licence code. Intuit saves it to your account for future installs.
6. Run Check for Updates before you start a return.

## TurboTax Desktop Canada download options

Intuit Canada sells four Desktop editions for tax year 2025: Basic, Standard, Premier and Home and Business, all listed for Windows devices only ([TurboTax Canada, Desktop](https://turbotax.intuit.ca/tax/software/desktop)). You download the edition you paid for; the licence code activates that edition.

If you bought a retail box, the box contains a card with the licence code rather than a disc, and you still download the installer. If you have a Mac, there is no Canadian Desktop version to install; TurboTax Online is the Intuit option.

### Older tax years

Prior-year editions are also offered as downloads for people filing late. For tax year 2019 and earlier, Intuit Canada says standard activation no longer works and you must run its separate desktop activator tool after installing. See [TurboTax Canada activation code](https://taxsoftwaredesk.com/turbotax-canada/turbotax-canada-activation-code) for how that tool uses the Installation Key field.

## TurboTax Canada Windows 11 and Windows 10 requirements

Intuit Canada recommends Windows 11 for TurboTax Desktop for tax year 2025 ([Intuit Canada, Windows requirements](https://turbotax.community.intuit.ca/turbotax-support/en-ca/help-article/download-products/end-support-windows-8-affect-turbotax-experience/L5VzEHDD4_CA_en_CA)). This is where the Canadian and US editions part ways. The US Desktop 2025 does not run on Windows 10, but an Intuit community manager stated on August 19, 2025 that the Canadian version of TurboTax Desktop 2025 will run on Windows 10.

| Edition | Windows 11 | Windows 10 | Mac |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| TurboTax Canada Desktop 2025 | Recommended | Runs (Intuit, Aug. 2025) | Not available |
| US TurboTax Desktop 2025 | Required, 64-bit | Not supported | macOS Sonoma 14 or later |

Windows support for TurboTax Desktop, tax year 2025

Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, so it no longer receives security updates. Whether the Canadian tax year 2026 edition will still install on Windows 10 is not yet announced; Intuit normally posts the new requirements in the fall before release. If you are replacing a computer anyway, Windows 11 avoids the question.

## Can I install TurboTax Canada on two computers?

Yes. Intuit Canada says you can install TurboTax Desktop on up to 3 computers that you own, at home or at work. The condition is that every install signs in to the same Intuit Account that first used the licence code.

1. On the second computer, download the same edition and tax year from turbotax.intuit.ca.
2. Install it and sign in with the original Intuit Account, not a spouse's or a new one.
3. The saved licence code should appear; select it to activate.
4. Copy your tax file from the first computer (by default it is usually in a TurboTax folder under Documents) if you want to keep working on the same return.

Signing in with a different account on the second computer is the usual cause of the already-linked message. That is explained in [TurboTax Canada error code 608](https://taxsoftwaredesk.com/turbotax-canada/turbotax-canada-error-code-608).

## Prepare before you install

Most failed installs are caused by something on the computer rather than the installer. Five minutes of preparation avoids the common ones.

Keep the downloaded installer until you have finished filing. If a later repair or reinstall is needed, having it saved means you do not depend on the download page at a busy time of year.

## TurboTax Canada install errors and what to try

Intuit Canada does not publish a single list of install error codes for the Canadian product, so work through the causes below. They match what the installer is doing at each stage.

| Problem | Likely cause | What to try |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Installer will not start | Blocked by Windows or security software | Run as administrator; allow the file in your antivirus |
| Install stops part way | Damaged or incomplete download | Delete the .exe, download again, restart and retry |
| Installed but will not open | Missing Windows updates | Run Windows Update, restart, then open TurboTax |
| Licence code refused | Wrong edition, year or account | See the activation code guide |
| Code linked to another account | Different Intuit Account used | See error 608 |
| Update fails after install | Update engine issue | See the update guide |

Common TurboTax Canada install problems

Intuit notes that uninstalling TurboTax Desktop does not delete your tax files, activation information or registration details ([Intuit Canada, update troubleshooting](https://turbotax.community.intuit.ca/turbotax-support/en-ca/help-article/uninstall-products/troubleshoot-update-issues-turbotax-canada-desktop/L8byURDAC_CA_en_CA)). A clean reinstall is therefore safe to try. If the install works but updates do not, go to [TurboTax Canada update not working](https://taxsoftwaredesk.com/turbotax-canada/turbotax-canada-update-not-working); for everything else, see the [TurboTax Canada problems](https://taxsoftwaredesk.com/turbotax-canada) hub.
