> To enter a 1099-DA in TurboTax, go to Investments and Savings and start the Stocks, Cryptocurrency, Mutual Funds, Bonds, Other (1099-B, 1099-DA) entry, then sign in to your exchange, upload the PDF, or type it. For 2025 sales brokers reported proceeds but usually not cost basis, so you must add your own basis or TurboTax flags the sale.

## Key facts

- Gross proceeds reported: Transactions on or after Jan 1, 2025
- Cost basis reported: Covered assets sold on or after Jan 1, 2026
- Proceeds box: Box 1f
- Basis box: Box 1g
- Exchange sign-in import: TurboTax Online only

## What Form 1099-DA is

Form 1099-DA, Digital Asset Proceeds From Broker Transactions, is the IRS form crypto brokers use to report what you received when you sold or exchanged digital assets. Custodial brokers must report gross proceeds for transactions on or after January 1, 2025, which is why many people saw the form for the first time in the 2026 filing season.

Cost basis comes a year later. Under the IRS instructions, brokers must report basis for sales on or after January 1, 2026 of digital assets that are covered securities, meaning assets acquired after 2025 in an account where the broker held them until the sale. Anything bought earlier, or moved in from another wallet, is generally noncovered, and the broker may leave basis blank.

| Box | What it shows |
| --- | --- |
| 1d | Date acquired |
| 1f | Gross proceeds |
| 1g | Cost or other basis |
| 6 | Short-term or long-term gain or loss |
| 9 | Checked if the asset is a noncovered security |
| 12a and 12b | Units transferred in and transfer-in date |

Brokers may use an optional aggregate method for small amounts: qualifying stablecoin sales up to $10,000 a year and specified NFT sales up to $600 a year, according to the IRS instructions. Those sales still count on your return.

## How to enter a 1099-DA in TurboTax

The 1099 DA TurboTax entry sits in the same place as stock sales. Intuit's path is Income in the Federal section, then Investments and Savings, then Start next to Stocks, Cryptocurrency, Mutual Funds, Bonds, Other (1099-B, 1099-DA). From there you pick one of three methods.

### TurboTax 1099-DA import from your exchange

1. Answer Yes to the investment income questions.
2. Search for your exchange and select it.
3. Sign in on the exchange's own page to authorize the import.
4. Wait for processing; Intuit says it can take up to 3 minutes.
5. Review every imported sale before continuing.

Intuit says this direct import is not available in TurboTax Desktop. Desktop users upload a TXF file through the Investment Income import screen instead, and Intuit's own article points to converting an exchange CSV into TXF format first.

### Upload a 1099-DA to TurboTax

To upload a 1099-DA to TurboTax Online, choose Upload on the investment screen and add a PDF, JPG, JPEG or PNG. If your broker put the 1099-DA inside a consolidated statement with 1099-B and 1099-DIV pages, Intuit suggests saving just the 1099-DA pages as a new PDF using your browser's print to PDF, then uploading that file through Add investments, Enter a different way, Upload.

## Import versus manual entry: which to use

Use the exchange import when you have many trades and your exchange is listed. Use upload when the exchange is not listed but you have its PDF. Type it in when you have only a few sales or when both automated routes misread the form.

If you had crypto trades plus stock trades at a regular brokerage, enter each account separately. A limit applies to large imports: Intuit lists 10,000 transactions in total and 4,000 non-covered transactions in TurboTax Online. Most crypto sales before 2026 are non-covered, so heavy traders reach the Online cap sooner. Import problems in general are covered in [TurboTax import not working](https://taxsoftwaredesk.com/import-transfer/turbotax-import-not-working).

## What to do when cost basis is missing

Missing basis is the single biggest 1099-DA problem. Intuit notes that brokers were not required to report cost basis on 2025 transactions, so box 1g is often blank. If you leave it blank, the whole proceeds amount can end up treated as gain.

> **Worked example:** Say box 1f shows $4,000 of proceeds and box 1g is blank. If you paid $3,100 for those units, your gain is $900. Leaving basis empty would report a $4,000 gain instead, overstating income by $3,100.

- Download the exchange's gain and loss or transaction history report for each asset sold.
- For units moved in from another wallet or exchange, get the purchase record from where you originally bought them.
- Enter the purchase date and cost for each sale, or the totals by short-term and long-term if TurboTax offers summary entry.
- Keep the records. The IRS says to keep proof of acquisition date, units, fair market value and basis.

## Why does my TurboTax 1099-DA need review?

A TurboTax 1099-DA needs review flag usually means a required field on a sale is empty. The common gaps are cost basis, date acquired, and whether the holding period was short-term or long-term.

| Flag points to | Cause | Fix |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Cost basis | Box 1g blank on the form | Enter basis from your own records |
| Date acquired | Box 1d blank or shows various | Enter the date or choose the holding period |
| Form type | Upload read the 1099-DA as a 1099-B | Delete the entry and upload only the 1099-DA pages |
| Duplicate sales | Same sales imported twice from import and upload | Delete one set |

Common 1099-DA review flags

If the flags keep coming back after you fill every field, the general steps in [TurboTax needs review](https://taxsoftwaredesk.com/turbotax-online/turbotax-needs-review) apply. If the form itself is wrong, the IRS says to ask the issuer for a corrected Form 1099-DA; the IRS cannot correct it for you.

## Reporting crypto when you get no 1099-DA

No form does not mean nothing to report. The IRS says you must report taxable income from digital assets whether or not you receive a Form 1099-DA or Form 1099-K. That includes trades on non-custodial wallets and decentralized platforms, which do not issue the form.

- Answer the digital asset question on Form 1040 truthfully. It asks whether you received, sold, exchanged or otherwise disposed of a digital asset during the year.
- Report sales on Form 8949, Sales and Other Dispositions of Capital Assets, using your own records. TurboTax builds Form 8949 from your entries.
- Report crypto received as pay or rewards as income at its fair market value in U.S. dollars when received.

Payment app sales are a separate form with a separate threshold; see [Form 1099-K in TurboTax](https://taxsoftwaredesk.com/import-transfer/form-1099-k-turbotax). For every other import route, start at the [TurboTax import guide](https://taxsoftwaredesk.com/import-transfer). If you use Desktop and change machines mid-season, move your file first using [TurboTax transfer to new computer](https://taxsoftwaredesk.com/import-transfer/turbotax-transfer-to-new-computer), because crypto entries are slow to rebuild.

3. **Add missing basis.** Enter cost and date acquired for any sale with a blank box 1g or 1d.
4. **Clear review flags.** Run Review and fill any field TurboTax still marks as missing.

## Common questions

### Can TurboTax import a 1099-DA from Coinbase?

TurboTax Online lets you search for your exchange and sign in to import forms and transactions. If your exchange is not listed, upload the 1099-DA PDF instead. Direct exchange import is not available in TurboTax Desktop.

### Where do I enter a 1099-DA in TurboTax?

Go to Income in the Federal section, then Investments and Savings, and select Start next to Stocks, Cryptocurrency, Mutual Funds, Bonds, Other (1099-B, 1099-DA).

### Why is there no cost basis on my 1099-DA?

Brokers were not required to report basis for 2025 sales. From 2026, basis is required only for covered assets bought after 2025 and held at the same broker. Enter basis from your own records.

### Does TurboTax Desktop support Form 1099-DA?

Yes, but without direct exchange import. Desktop users type the form or import a TXF file through the Investment Income section.

### Do I need to report crypto if I did not get a 1099-DA?

Yes. The IRS says all digital asset income, gains and losses must be reported whether or not you receive a 1099-DA or 1099-K.

### What if my 1099-DA is wrong?

Ask the broker that issued it for a corrected form and keep the corrected copy with your records. The IRS says it cannot correct a 1099-DA.
