> H&R Block's system requirements page, checked 18 September 2026, lists Windows 10 or higher for its consumer tax software, so Windows 10 is still on its supported list. Requirements for the tax year 2026 edition, used in the 2027 season, are not yet announced. H&R Block Business already requires Windows 11, and H&R Block Online runs in a browser on either system.

## Key facts

- Consumer software, Windows: Windows 10 or higher (checked 18 Sept 2026)
- H&R Block Business: Windows 11 required
- Tax year 2026 edition requirements: Not yet announced
- Windows 10 end of support: October 14, 2025 (Microsoft)

## Does H&R Block support Windows 10?

Yes, for now. H&R Block's software system requirements page, as we read it on 18 September 2026, gives the Windows minimum for its tax software as Windows 10 or higher, with 170 MB of disk space and a 1024 x 768 display. That is the page H&R Block points buyers to before they install.

Two limits matter. First, the page does not print a tax year next to the requirements, so it describes the current software rather than promising anything about the next edition. Second, it lists a separate, stricter set for the Business product.

| Product | Windows version | Memory | Disk space |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| H&R Block Tax Software (consumer) | Windows 10 or higher | Not stated | 170 MB |
| H&R Block Business | Windows 11 | 8 GB | 15 GB |

## Will H&R Block 2026 work on Windows 10

The software for tax year 2026, the edition people will use to file in early 2027, has not had its system requirements announced as of 18 September 2026. Nobody outside H&R Block can say yet whether it will keep Windows 10 on the list. Treat any claim either way as unconfirmed until the requirements page changes.

What we can say is how to check. Before you buy, open H&R Block's requirements page and look at the Windows line for the consumer software. If it still reads Windows 10 or higher, your PC qualifies on the operating system. If it changes to Windows 11, plan for one of the options below rather than installing on an unsupported system.

### Where Windows 10 itself stands

Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. Its end-of-support page, checked 18 September 2026, says PCs enrolled in the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program keep getting critical and important security updates through October 12, 2027. Microsoft lists three ways for consumers to enroll: at no cost when syncing PC settings, by redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or with a one-time payment of $30 plus tax.

For a tax program that handles Social Security numbers and bank details, a Windows 10 PC without ESU is running without security patches. That is a reason to enroll or move on even if the tax software still installs.

## H&R Block tax software on Windows 10: getting it running

If you use the current H&R Block software on Windows 10, the setup rules are the same as on Windows 11. H&R Block's update help notes that Windows 10 users need administrator rights to download and install updates.

- Install to the default location on the C: drive; H&R Block says updates fail if the program is on another drive.
- Restart after any Windows update before installing or updating the tax program.
- Pause antivirus while installing, then turn it back on.
- If the installer stops with a numbered message, check the [H&R Block error codes list](https://taxsoftwaredesk.com/hr-block/hr-block-error-codes); a 1722 message has its own page, [H&R Block error 1722](https://taxsoftwaredesk.com/hr-block/hr-block-error-1722).

## H&R Block Online on Windows 10

H&R Block Online does not install anything, so the Windows version matters much less. H&R Block's browser compatibility page names Windows 10 with Edge, Firefox and Chrome among supported setups, and says the browser must accept cookies and JavaScript. Your return is stored in your H&R Block account rather than on the PC.

The trade-off is that Online is priced and packaged differently from the download software, and your data lives with H&R Block rather than in a file you control. ## What are my options on an older PC

1. **Keep Windows 10 and enroll in ESU.** Security updates continue through October 12, 2027, which covers the 2027 filing season, provided the next H&R Block edition still supports Windows 10.
2. **Upgrade to Windows 11** if the PC meets Microsoft's hardware requirements. Microsoft's PC Health Check tool reports whether it does.
3. **Switch to H&R Block Online** and file in a current browser.
4. **Use a newer computer** for tax season and copy last year's return file over, then activate the software again as H&R Block requires on a second computer.

Whichever route you take, decide before you buy the tax year 2026 software, not after a failed install.

## How this compares to TurboTax on Windows 10

Intuit has taken a firmer line. It states that TurboTax Desktop 2025 requires 64-bit Windows 11 and cannot be used on Windows 10, and it points Windows 10 users to upgrading or to TurboTax Online. H&R Block's consumer software requirements, by contrast, still read Windows 10 or higher as of 18 September 2026.

That difference applies to the current editions only; both companies can change requirements for the next one. Intuit's options are covered in [TurboTax on Windows 10](https://taxsoftwaredesk.com/turbotax-desktop/turbotax-windows-10-options), and every other H&R Block problem is indexed at [H&R Block not working](https://taxsoftwaredesk.com/hr-block).

## Common questions

### Will H&R Block software work on Windows 10?

The current consumer software does: H&R Block's requirements page lists Windows 10 or higher as of 18 September 2026. Requirements for the tax year 2026 edition have not been announced, so recheck before buying.

### Does H&R Block Business run on Windows 10?

No. H&R Block lists Windows 11, 8 GB of RAM and 15 GB of disk space for its Business product.

### Can I use H&R Block Online on Windows 10?

Yes. Online runs in a browser, and H&R Block lists Windows 10 with Edge, Firefox or Chrome as supported, with cookies and JavaScript turned on.

### Is it safe to do my taxes on Windows 10?

Microsoft stopped regular support on October 14, 2025. Enrolling in Extended Security Updates keeps security patches coming through October 12, 2027, according to Microsoft's end-of-support page.

### Why does TurboTax need Windows 11 but H&R Block does not?

Each company sets its own requirements. Intuit requires Windows 11 for TurboTax Desktop 2025, while H&R Block's consumer requirements still read Windows 10 or higher as of 18 September 2026.
