> If H&R Block software cannot connect to the server, the block is almost always on your computer: a wrong system date and time, a firewall or security suite, or the program's proxy setting. H&R Block's fix is to correct the clock, pause security software, switch Tools > Proxy Settings to the system automatic script or disable proxies, then restart and try again.

## Key facts

- Needs a connection: Updates, state downloads, e-file
- Works offline: Entering and saving your return
- Proxy setting location: Tools menu > Proxy Settings (Windows)
- Windows 10 support ended: October 14, 2025 (Microsoft)

## Does H&R Block desktop software need internet?

Partly. You can type in your W-2s, run the interview and save your return with no connection at all. H&R Block's system requirements page says an internet connection is required for three things: program updates, state downloads and e-file. Any online step the program asks for, such as entering a code to activate it, needs a connection too.

So the "cannot connect" message matters most at two moments: when you install a state program or update, and when you press the button to e-file. Knowing which moment you are in tells you how urgent the problem is and which fix to try first.

| When it fails | What you cannot do | Your work is |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Checking for updates | Get new or corrected forms | Safe; keep working |
| Buying or downloading a state | Start the state return | Safe; federal still editable |
| Online activation step | Finish that step | Safe; saved locally |
| Transmitting the e-file | Send the return to the IRS or state | Not filed until it transmits |

What each connection failure blocks

## Why H&R Block software cannot connect to the internet

Start by confirming the computer is online: open any website in a browser. If websites load but H&R Block still says it cannot connect, the program's secure connection is being refused. H&R Block treats this as an SSL problem, and SSL depends on an accurate clock, open ports and correct proxy settings.

### Fix 1: correct the date and time

Secure certificates are checked against your system clock. A clock that is days off, which happens after a dead CMOS battery or a dual-boot setup, makes a valid certificate look expired. On Windows, open the clock in the lower right of the taskbar, set the correct date and time, and apply. On a Mac, set it under Date & Time in system settings.

## Firewall and antivirus rules

H&R Block's SSL instructions tell you to temporarily turn off all firewall and security software, then retry the state install or e-file. Third-party suites that inspect encrypted traffic are the usual culprits, because they sit between the program and the server.

1. Save and close your return.
2. Pause your antivirus and any third-party firewall.
3. Reopen H&R Block and repeat the action that failed.
4. If it now works, turn protection back on and add the H&R Block program as an allowed app so you do not need to pause it next time.
5. If it still fails with protection off, the cause is elsewhere; move on to proxy settings.

Home networks with router-level security filtering can block the connection too, even when the PC's own firewall is off. If you have such a feature, try from a different network, such as a phone hotspot, to confirm.

## Proxy, VPN and date settings

The Windows program has its own proxy setting, separate from the browser. H&R Block's steps:

1. In H&R Block, open the Tools menu and choose Proxy Settings.
2. Choose Use the system automatic proxy configuration script, then OK.
3. Try the state install or e-file again.
4. If that fails, go back and choose Disable all proxy settings instead.
5. Restart the computer before trying to e-file or buy a state return.

A VPN is not on H&R Block's list, but it changes the route and sometimes the certificate chain the program sees. Disconnecting it for the few minutes it takes to transmit is a simple test. Corporate VPNs and work laptops add their own proxy rules, which is another reason to file from a personal computer.

## H&R Block cannot connect to server on Windows 10

H&R Block's requirements page lists Windows 10 or higher for its consumer software. Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, which means no more security updates, and outdated security components can cause secure connections to fail over time. H&R Block Business already requires Windows 11.

Whether the tax year 2026 edition for the 2027 season will still run on Windows 10 is not yet announced. If you are on Windows 10 and connection errors persist after every fix above, run Windows Update, then read our [H&R Block on Windows 10](https://taxsoftwaredesk.com/hr-block/hr-block-windows-10) page for your options.

## If you cannot connect near the filing deadline

A return that never transmitted has not been filed, so do not wait for the problem to fix itself on deadline day. Keep your options open:

- Try a different network, such as a phone hotspot, which bypasses router filters and many proxy problems at once.
- Copy your .tXX return file from Documents\HR Block to another computer that has the same H&R Block edition and e-file from there.
- Print and mail the return. H&R Block's help center explains how to print a software return for mailing.
- Late in December, remember the IRS pauses e-file for a short cutover period at the end of each calendar year, so a failure then may not be your connection at all.

> **Transmitted but rejected is a different problem:** If the return did reach the IRS and came back rejected, the connection is fine. If the program connects but your online account will not accept your password or code, that is a sign-in issue; see [H&R Block trouble signing in](https://taxsoftwaredesk.com/hr-block/hr-block-trouble-signing-in). ## Step by step

1. **Check the clock.** Set the correct date and time on the computer.
2. **Pause security software.** Temporarily turn off firewall and antivirus, then retry.
3. **Change the proxy setting.** Tools > Proxy Settings > Use the system automatic proxy configuration script; if that fails, Disable all proxy settings.
4. **Restart and retry.** Restart the computer, disconnect any VPN and try the update, state download or e-file again.

## Common questions

### Why can't H&R Block software connect to the server?

Usually because the system date and time are wrong, a firewall or antivirus suite is blocking the secure connection, or the program's proxy setting does not match your network. H&R Block's fix covers all three.

### Does H&R Block Desktop need internet?

Only for updates, state downloads, activation and e-file. You can prepare and save your return offline and connect when you are ready to update or file.

### What is an SSL error in H&R Block software?

It means the program could not set up a secure connection to H&R Block's servers. Correct your clock, pause security software and change the proxy setting under Tools > Proxy Settings, then restart.

### Can I e-file my H&R Block return from another computer?

Yes, if that computer has the same H&R Block edition installed. Copy the .tXX file from Documents\HR Block with a USB drive and open it there.

### Is H&R Block down or is it my computer?

Test from a different network, such as a phone hotspot. If it works there, the block is on your original network or computer. If it fails everywhere, the problem is more likely on the server side.
