> If TurboTax won't let me efile is your problem, the program has spotted something the IRS e-file system cannot take. Intuit's list includes overrides, forms not yet final or not accepted for e-file, W-2 errors, prior-year returns and some state returns. Timing matters too: e-file is closed before the season opens and during a short year-end cutover. Most blockers can be fixed; a few mean mailing the return.

## Key facts

- E-file window: Current year plus two previous tax years (IRS Pub 1345)
- 2026 season opening: January 26, 2026
- 2027 season opening: Not yet announced; usually announced in early January
- Prior-year TurboTax returns: Printed and mailed, per Intuit

## Why can't I e-file on TurboTax

TurboTax won't let me efile usually shows up as a File step that offers only print and mail, or a message that the return is not eligible. The program runs a final e-file check that is stricter than the regular review, and anything the IRS system would refuse gets stopped there instead.

Intuit's help article on the topic lists these blockers. Work through them in order, because the first few are the easiest to fix.

| Blocker | Can you fix it? | Fix |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Override on a form | Yes | Remove the override and enter the amount normally |
| Form not final | Yes, by waiting | Check Intuit's forms availability tool |
| W-2 box 1 blank or box 16 above box 1 | Usually | Re-enter the W-2 from the paper copy |
| Form not accepted for e-file | No | Print and mail |
| Prior-year return | No | Print and mail |
| Dependent already claimed | No | Paper file |

E-file blockers and what fixes them

## Forms not yet final

Early in the season, some federal and state forms are still being finished by the tax agencies and by Intuit. Intuit notes that forms are released on different schedules. A return that includes a form marked not yet available cannot be e-filed until that form is final, even if every other entry is complete.

Check Intuit's forms availability tool for the date of each form on your return. If it says a form will be ready in two weeks, the fix is to wait and file then, not to delete the form.

## E-file not open yet

The IRS takes individual returns only during its season. The 2026 season opened on Monday, January 26, 2026, and e-file began at 9 a.m. Eastern that day. The opening date for the 2027 season, for tax year 2026 returns, is not yet announced; the IRS usually announces it in early January.

IRS Pub 1345 also describes a short cutover period at the end of each calendar year when e-file pauses. TurboTax may hold a return prepared early until the IRS opens. See [when TurboTax starts accepting returns](https://taxsoftwaredesk.com/efile-fixes/when-does-turbotax-start-accepting-returns) for how that works.

## TurboTax not letting me file: overrides and W-2 errors

An override is a number typed directly into a form in TurboTax Desktop Forms mode, replacing the calculated figure. Intuit says a return that contains any override cannot be e-filed. Search the forms for red or highlighted amounts, clear each override, and enter the value through the interview instead.

W-2 problems block the file step too. Intuit specifically names a W-2 with box 1 left blank and one where box 16 state wages exceed box 1 federal wages. For example, box 1 at 48,200 dollars with box 16 at 52,000 dollars stops e-file. If the paper W-2 really shows those figures, ask the employer to confirm them or issue a corrected W-2; if the figures stand, the return must be mailed.

## Returns that must be mailed

Some returns cannot go electronically however clean they are. Intuit lists forms or schedules the IRS does not accept for e-file, many nonresident and part-year resident state returns, and a return claiming a dependent that someone else has already claimed. It also names errors in IRS records that TurboTax cannot correct.

In the dependent case, the other return was accepted first, so yours would be rejected electronically; filing on paper lets the IRS sort out who qualifies. Our [TurboTax state return rejected](https://taxsoftwaredesk.com/efile-fixes/turbotax-state-return-rejected) page covers state returns that fail after they are sent.

## Older tax years outside the e-file window

The IRS limits e-file of individual returns to those with due dates in the current year and the two previous years. TurboTax is narrower. Intuit says it does not e-file prior-year returns, and a rejected return from an earlier year must be fixed in TurboTax Desktop and mailed.

So a 2023 or 2024 return prepared in 2026 goes by mail from TurboTax even though the IRS window might allow it through a paid preparer or other software. Our page on downloading a prior-year return explains getting the older edition.

## TurboTax not allowing me to e-file: signing and payment steps

The final File steps also require you to choose how to pay any TurboTax fees, confirm your identity and sign. The IRS signature method asks for last year's AGI or PIN, and Pub 1345 says a primary taxpayer under 16 who has never filed cannot use the Self-Select PIN. That rule stops e-file for some teen filers.

If the File screen stops at identity questions, see [prior-year AGI or PIN](https://taxsoftwaredesk.com/efile-fixes/prior-year-agi-or-pin). If anyone on the return has an IRS Identity Protection PIN, it must be entered first; see [where to enter your IP PIN in TurboTax](https://taxsoftwaredesk.com/efile-fixes/ip-pin-turbotax). ## Step by step

1. **Read the File message.** Note which form, override or rule the e-file check names.
2. **Clear what you can.** Remove overrides, correct W-2 entries and wait for forms that are not final.
3. **Check timing.** Confirm the IRS e-file season is open and the return is for the current year.
4. **Mail what you cannot.** Print, sign and mail returns with ineligible forms, prior years or dependent conflicts.

## Common questions

### Why won't TurboTax let me e-file?

The return contains something the IRS e-file system cannot accept, such as an override, a form that is not final, a W-2 error or a form that must be mailed. The File step shows which one.

### Can I e-file a prior-year return in TurboTax?

No. Intuit says prior-year returns prepared in TurboTax must be printed and mailed, even though the IRS allows e-file for the current and two previous years through other channels.

### Why does TurboTax only give me the option to mail my return?

Usually because the return includes a form or state not eligible for e-file, or an override. Remove any override first; if the form itself is ineligible, mailing is the only route.

### Can I e-file in December?

Not for the new tax year. The IRS pauses e-file for a short cutover at year-end and opens the new season in late January; the 2027 opening date is not yet announced.

### Can a 15-year-old e-file with TurboTax?

A primary filer under 16 who has never filed cannot use the IRS Self-Select PIN, per Pub 1345, which blocks e-file for many first-time teen filers.
