> The TurboTax Online vs Desktop difference is where the return lives and how many you can file. Online runs in a browser, saves to your Intuit account and files one federal return per account. Desktop installs on Windows 11 or macOS Sonoma 14 or later, saves a .tax2025 file on your computer and files up to five federal returns.

## Key facts

- Online returns per Intuit account: One federal, any number of states
- Desktop returns per license: Up to five federal, three states each
- Desktop 2025 on Windows: Windows 11 (64-bit) required
- Desktop 2025 on Mac: macOS Sonoma 14 or later
- Current-year Desktop return to Online: Not transferable

## What is the difference between TurboTax Online and TurboTax Desktop?

TurboTax Online is a web application: you sign in to an Intuit account, answer the interview in a browser, and the return is stored on Intuit's servers. TurboTax Desktop is installed software: you activate a license, and the return is saved as a data file, such as a .tax2025 file, on your own computer.

Both versions use the same tax calculations and e-file through the same IRS system. The choice between TurboTax Online vs Desktop is practical: which computer you have, how many returns you prepare, and whether you want your records in an account or in a file you back up yourself.

## Where your data lives

With Online, your return follows your Intuit account. You can start on a laptop, add a form photographed on your phone and finish on another computer, and prior-year returns filed online stay available when you sign in. If you lose access to the account, you lose easy access to the returns, which is why sign-in recovery matters; see [TurboTax login problems](https://taxsoftwaredesk.com/turbotax-online/turbotax-login-problems) if that happens.

With Desktop, the .tax file is yours. It sits in your Documents folder unless you move it, it opens without an internet connection, and it can be copied to a USB drive or a new computer. The trade-off is that backups are your job: a failed hard drive with no copy means a lost return file. Keep a PDF of every filed return as well, since you need last year's AGI to e-file next year.

## Computer requirements: Windows 11 for Desktop 2025

Desktop has firm system requirements; Online needs only a current browser. Intuit's requirements page for TurboTax Desktop 2025 lists the following, checked in September 2026.

### Which TurboTax works on Windows 10?

Only TurboTax Online. Intuit says TurboTax Desktop 2025 cannot be used on Windows 10 and names two options: upgrade to Windows 11 or switch to Online. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Requirements for the tax year 2026 Desktop edition are not yet announced as of September 2026; Intuit normally posts them in the fall.

## Multiple returns: which version files more?

Desktop is the version for households that prepare several returns. Intuit's help article says Desktop can prepare and file up to five federal returns with a maximum of three state returns for each. Online allows one federal return, with as many state returns as that return needs, per Intuit account.

To do a second return online, such as for an adult child, you create a second Intuit account and pay for that return separately. Intuit caps any one email address at five accounts and five federal returns across its products, which lines up with the IRS limit of five e-filed federal returns per email address or phone number in consumer software.

> **Not for paid preparation:** Intuit's license terms prohibit using TurboTax for commercial or professional tax preparation, whichever version you buy.

## TurboTax desktop vs online: how you pay

Online lets you start for free and collects the fee for your tier when you file or print. If your return turns out to be a simple Form 1040, the Free Edition may cost nothing; the details are on [Is TurboTax free?](https://taxsoftwaredesk.com/choosing-software/is-turbotax-free).

Desktop is a purchased license that you activate, and there is no free Desktop edition. The license lets you prepare several returns for the price of one product, which is where Desktop tends to cost less for families. If your AGI is $89,000 or less, compare both against the no-cost [IRS Free File program](https://taxsoftwaredesk.com/choosing-software/irs-free-file-program) first.

## Switching mid-season: the one-way rule

You can move a current-year return from Online to Desktop, but not from Desktop to Online. Intuit's transfer page says a tax data file can be transferred to Online only if it is from a prior year's return.

### How to move a return from Online to Desktop

1. Install and open TurboTax Desktop 2025, buying it first if you have not.
2. On the first screen, select Continue From TurboTax Online.
3. Sign in with the same Intuit account that holds your online return.
4. Let TurboTax import the data, then install any state programs your return needs.
5. Review every section before filing, since imported entries still need checking.

If you started in Desktop and then your computer fails or you must use Windows 10, you cannot upload that current-year .tax file to Online; you would re-enter the return online. Next season, however, Online can import last year's Desktop file, provided it has the .tax extension and no password.

## TurboTax online vs desktop: which is better for you?

- **Pick Online if** you are on Windows 10, a Chromebook or a work-managed PC, file one return, want to use a phone for part of the work, or may qualify for the Free Edition.
- **Pick Desktop if** you have Windows 11 or macOS Sonoma 14 or later, file for several household members, want a local file you control, or work with a slow or unreliable internet connection until filing day.

## Common questions

### Is TurboTax Desktop better than Online?

Desktop is better for families filing several returns on a Windows 11 PC or recent Mac, since it files up to five federal returns. Online is better on older computers, for one return, or if you may qualify for the Free Edition.

### Can I switch from TurboTax Desktop to Online after starting?

Not for the current year. Intuit only transfers prior-year tax data files into Online, so a current-year Desktop return would have to be re-entered online.

### Does TurboTax Desktop need the internet?

You can prepare the return offline, but activation, updates and e-filing need a connection. Download updates before you start and again before filing.

### Can I use TurboTax Desktop on more than one computer?

The return is a portable .tax file you can copy to another computer that meets the system requirements. Install TurboTax on that computer before opening the file there.

### Is TurboTax Online safe for storing returns?

Online returns are stored in your Intuit account, so account security is what protects them. Use a strong unique password and keep your recovery phone and email current.
