> When Free File Fillable Forms is not working, the cause is usually an unsupported browser or device, blocked pop-ups or cookies, or a verification email caught in spam. The IRS says the program does not support phones or tablets, and October 15 is the last day to create an account or e-file for the season.

## Key facts

- Supported devices: Windows or Mac computer; mobile devices not supported
- Required browser settings: JavaScript and cookies on; pop-up, tracking and auto-fill blockers off
- Last day to create an account or e-file: October 15
- Accounts and data erased: October 20
- Acceptance or rejection email: Check spam and STEP 5 if none after 48 hours

## Why is Free File Fillable Forms not working?

Free File Fillable Forms stops working most often because of the device or browser, not your return. The IRS warns that if your setup falls short of its minimum requirements you can hit browser or operating system problems, and in some cases lose access to account or return information ([IRS minimum requirements](https://www.irs.gov/e-file-providers/minimum-computer-requirements-for-free-file-fillable-forms)).

Free File Fillable Forms is the IRS Free File option that shows electronic copies of IRS forms, lets you fill them in and e-files the federal return, with no income limit. Because it is a form-filler rather than an interview, it breaks in different ways from guided software. Sort your problem into one of four groups: the page, the sign-in, the submission or the program's limits.

## Browser requirements for Free File Fillable Forms

Use a desktop or laptop with the latest Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari. As of its July 2026 review, the IRS requirements page lists Windows 7, 8 and 10 and Mac OS X 10.14 Mojave or later, and states plainly that the program does not support mobile devices.

| Item | IRS requirement or recommendation |
| --- | --- |
| Browser | Latest Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox or Safari |
| Browser settings | Default language, medium font size, JavaScript and cookies enabled |
| Blockers | Pop-up blockers, tracking blockers and auto-fill turned off |
| Hardware | Intel Core i3, 4 GB RAM, 1920 x 1080 monitor, high-speed internet |
| Printing | Adobe Acrobat Reader DC or later |
| Phones and tablets | Not supported |

Browser extensions that fill in forms or block trackers are the quiet culprits. Turn them off for the site, or open a separate browser profile with no extensions. If data disappears when you switch forms, the IRS also says to make sure each form is completed according to its instructions, because incomplete sections may not save or print.

## Free File Fillable Forms email verification not working

If the verification email never arrives, check the junk or spam folder of the exact address you typed during setup; the IRS notes that email servers can filter these messages ([IRS account questions](https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-fillable-forms/free-file-fillable-forms-account-questions)). Messages come from customer_service@freefilefillableforms.com, so add that address to your contacts and request the code again.

The IRS is blunt about one point: if you do not receive the verification codes by email or text, you cannot create an account. If the address was mistyped, start a new account with the correct one rather than waiting.

### The six-digit code on a new device

When you sign in from a device other than the one you used to create the account, Free File Fillable Forms sends a six-digit code to your phone or email ([IRS six-digit code](https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-fillable-forms/free-file-fillable-forms-six-digit-code)). If it does not arrive, the IRS page directs you to its help page or to the program's support email, wifreefilecs3@irs.gov, with your account details.

## Free File Fillable Forms login problems

Use the I forgot my user ID or I forgot my password links, choose text or email recovery, enter the code you receive and follow the prompts. This recovery works only for an account created for the current tax year.

Last year's login does not carry over. The IRS erases every account and its tax data after the season closes, so a returning user must create a new account each year. If you need a copy of a return filed last season, request a transcript from the IRS instead, because the old Fillable Forms data cannot be retrieved.

## Rejected returns in Free File Fillable Forms

A rejected return is treated as not filed, so fix it and resubmit quickly. If you do not get the acceptance or rejection email within 48 hours, check spam, then sign in and read STEP 5 for the status ([IRS transmission help](https://www.irs.gov/e-file-providers/help-with-transmitting-a-return)).

1. Sign in and read the reject reason shown in your account.
2. Look up the reason with the IRS Error Search Tool linked from the Fillable Forms help page.
3. Correct the form or the e-file signature information; if STEP 4 says e-filing information is incomplete, fix each item it lists.
4. Resubmit, then watch for the new acceptance or rejection email.

Timing protects you if you act fast. Under IRS Publication 1345, a return first sent by the due date and rejected is still timely if you correct it and resubmit electronically within five calendar days after the due date ([IRS Publication 1345](https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p1345.pdf)). If it cannot go electronically, a paper return is timely if filed by the later of the due date or 10 calendar days after the rejection notice, with an explanation.

Signature rejections usually come from a prior-year AGI mismatch; see [prior-year AGI or PIN](https://taxsoftwaredesk.com/efile-fixes/prior-year-agi-or-pin). For how resubmission works in other products, see [resubmit a rejected tax return](https://taxsoftwaredesk.com/efile-fixes).

> **Known issue: Form 5695:** The IRS help page reports that its system is rejecting submissions with Form 5695 when the Qualified Manufacturer Identification Number (QMID) contains the letter I or O. Fillable Forms cannot apply the workaround, so affected filers need another filing method.

## Free File Fillable Forms limits: no state and few calculations

Some things that look broken are program limits. Free File Fillable Forms does basic math only, leaves some calculations to you, does not prepare or e-file state returns and is not for paid preparers.

- Form 1040-SR is not supported; seniors file on Form 1040 instead.
- Up to 50 Forms W-2, 8 Forms 8829 and 4 Forms 8082 or 8283 per return.
- Form 1098-C for vehicle donations is not supported.
- Forms 1040-V and 1040-ES are print only, and Form 8453 must be mailed separately.
- Only calendar-year Form 1040 returns; no attachments beyond those built into the program.
- Negative amounts need a minus sign in front of the number.

If a limit blocks you, move to guided software. Filers with AGI of $89,000 or less for tax year 2025 qualify for guided IRS Free File; see [IRS Free File program](https://taxsoftwaredesk.com/choosing-software/irs-free-file-program), [IRS Direct File alternatives](https://taxsoftwaredesk.com/choosing-software/irs-direct-file-alternatives) or the [best tax software](https://taxsoftwaredesk.com/choosing-software) guide.

## Free File Fillable Forms not working in 2026: season dates

In the 2026 season, Free File Fillable Forms opened on January 26, 2026. October 15 is the last day to create an account or e-file, the program closes on October 20, and all accounts and data are then erased ([IRS account questions](https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-fillable-forms/free-file-fillable-forms-account-questions)). Download a PDF of your return before then.

Between October 20 and the 2027 opening, the site will not work for anyone. The 2027 opening date is not yet announced; the IRS usually confirms it in January.

## Step by step

1. **Check the device.** Use a Windows or Mac computer, not a phone or tablet, with the latest Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.
2. **Fix browser settings.** Enable JavaScript and cookies and turn off pop-up blockers, tracking blockers and auto-fill.
3. **Find the verification email.** Search spam for customer_service@freefilefillableforms.com and request a new code if needed.
4. **Resolve rejections.** Read the reject reason, look it up in the IRS Error Search Tool, correct it and resubmit.

## Common questions

### Why can't I log in to Free File Fillable Forms?

Accounts last one season only, so last year's user ID no longer exists and you must create a new account. For a current account, use the forgotten user ID or password links, which send a code by text or email.

### Why didn't I get the Free File Fillable Forms verification email?

Check spam and junk folders in the exact email account you entered, and look for mail from customer_service@freefilefillableforms.com. The IRS says you cannot create an account without receiving the code.

### Does Free File Fillable Forms work on an iPad or phone?

No. The IRS states the program does not support mobile devices, so use a Windows or Mac computer with a current browser.

### Can I file my state return with Free File Fillable Forms?

No. It prepares and e-files the federal return only, so the state return has to be filed another way.

### What is the last day to use Free File Fillable Forms?

October 15 is the last day to create an account or e-file. The program closes on October 20 and erases all accounts and data.

### Why do my entries disappear in Free File Fillable Forms?

The IRS links this to forms that are not fully completed and to browser settings. Complete the form per its instructions and set the browser to default language, medium font, with JavaScript and cookies enabled.
