> The best tax software is the cheapest program that supports every form your return needs. If your 2025 adjusted gross income (AGI) was $89,000 or less, start with IRS Free File, which listed 8 partner products in 2026. Above that, compare free-tier coverage, desktop versus online, and add-on fees before you enter any data.

## Key facts

- IRS Free File AGI limit (tax year 2025): $89,000 or less
- IRS Free File partners in 2026: 8
- TurboTax Free Edition eligibility: About 37% of filers, per Intuit
- FreeTaxUSA 2025 pricing: Federal free, state $15.99
- Free File limit for the 2027 season: Not yet announced (usually January)

## What is the best tax software for most people?

The best tax software for you is the lowest-cost program that handles every form on your return without forcing an upgrade halfway through. There is no single winner, because a W-2 earner with the standard deduction and a freelancer with crypto sales need very different coverage. Picking by brand name alone is how most people end up paying for a tier they did not plan on.

Tax software, in this guide, means a consumer program that interviews you, fills in IRS or CRA forms and transmits the return electronically. Every product authorized to e-file works from the same federal tax rules, so the differences that matter are price, which forms each tier accepts, how data gets in, where your file is stored and what help you can reach.

> **How we compare:** Tax Software Desk is independent and is not affiliated with Intuit, H&R Block, TaxAct, FreeTaxUSA, TaxSlayer, Block Inc. (Cash App Taxes), Wealthsimple, UFile or any other software company. No product pays for placement here, and we do not rank products by commission. Every price and limit on this page comes from the vendor's own page or irs.gov, checked in September 2026.

## Best tax software for individuals: match the program to your return

Start with a list of the forms you received last year, then check which products cover all of them at their free or lowest tier. This short table maps common return types to where you should look first.

| Your situation | Look first at | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| AGI of $89,000 or less | IRS Free File partner, entered through IRS.gov | Guided software at no cost if you meet that partner's rules |
| Simple Form 1040, W-2 only, standard deduction | Any vendor's free tier | TurboTax and H&R Block free tiers both target simple 1040 returns |
| Unemployment on Form 1099-G | A free tier that lists 1099-G | H&R Block Free Online includes it; TurboTax Free Edition excludes it |
| Itemized deductions, stock sales, self-employment | Low-cost paid tiers or FreeTaxUSA | FreeTaxUSA does every supported federal form free and charges $15.99 per state |
| Comfortable with forms, any income, no state return | Free File Fillable Forms | No income limit, but limited math and no state filing |
| Several family returns on one computer | A desktop edition | TurboTax Desktop files up to five federal returns |

Where to start, by type of return (tax year 2025 rules, checked September 2026)

### Five questions to answer before you sign up

1. **Which forms will I file?** Schedule A, Schedule C, Schedule D, Form 1099-B or Form 1099-DA each push many products into paid tiers.
2. **Do I need a state return, and what does it cost?** FreeTaxUSA lists $15.99 for a 2025 state return; other vendors price states separately.
3. **Online or desktop?** Desktop editions keep a file on your computer and have operating system rules; online editions run in a browser.
4. **Can I import last year's data?** Switching brands usually means uploading a PDF of last year's Form 1040.
5. **What help is included?** Email support, live chat and access to a credentialed preparer are often separate add-ons.

## Which tax software is free?

Truly free federal filing exists through three routes: IRS Free File for AGI of $89,000 or less, Free File Fillable Forms for any income, and vendor free tiers limited to simple returns. The catch with vendor free tiers is that they are defined by form, not by income, so one extra form can end the free price.

- **IRS Free File:** for tax year 2025, 8 partners offered guided software to people with AGI of $89,000 or less. Each partner sets its own extra rules on age, income, state residency or military status. Details are on our [IRS Free File program guide](https://taxsoftwaredesk.com/choosing-software/irs-free-file-program).
- **TurboTax Free Edition:** Intuit says about 37% of filers qualify; it covers simple Form 1040 returns with no schedules except the EITC, Child Tax Credit, student loan interest and Schedule 1-A. What triggers a charge is covered in [Is TurboTax free?](https://taxsoftwaredesk.com/choosing-software/is-turbotax-free).
- **FreeTaxUSA:** federal returns are free for every supported form; the state return costs $15.99 for 2025 returns.
- **IRS-certified volunteers (VITA and TCE):** free preparation for people who generally earn $69,000 or less, people with disabilities, people 60 or older and people who need language support.

## Online or desktop tax software: how do I choose?

Choose online software if you want to work from any device and do not mind your return living in a vendor account. Choose desktop software if you want the return saved as a file you control, or you prepare several family returns on one machine.

Desktop has hardware rules that online does not. TurboTax Desktop 2025 needs Windows 11 (64-bit) or macOS Sonoma 14 or later, while H&R Block's requirements page lists Windows 10 or higher for its consumer software. Requirements for the tax year 2026 editions are not yet announced; vendors usually publish them in the fall. ## Tax software comparison: head-to-head US guides

Two matchups account for most of the comparison searches we see. Each guide below sticks to verifiable differences: system requirements, free-tier forms, imports, return limits and support options.

- [TurboTax vs H&R Block](https://taxsoftwaredesk.com/choosing-software/turbotax-vs-hr-block): both sell online and downloadable editions, but their free tiers and desktop requirements differ.

### Why best tax software reddit threads disagree

Forum recommendations reflect each poster's own return, season and price paid, so a product that was free for a student may cost a landlord real money. When you read a thread, check the tax year it discusses and which forms the poster filed. Then confirm the current tier rules on the vendor's page, because free-tier definitions change from season to season.

## Best tax software 2026 season and what changes for 2027

For the 2026 season, which covered tax year 2025 returns, the IRS opened e-file on January 26, 2026, IRS Free File began accepting returns on January 9, 2026 and Free File Fillable Forms opened on January 26, 2026. Tax year 2025 also brought Schedule 1-A for the new tips, overtime, car loan interest and senior deductions, which TurboTax now lists inside its free tier.

For the 2027 season, the IRS opening date, the Free File AGI limit and the new desktop system requirements are all not yet announced as of September 2026. The IRS usually confirms the start date and Free File limit in January, and vendors release new editions in late fall. Treat any 2027 price you see before then as provisional.

## Best tax software in Canada

Canadian filers need software certified by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) for NETFILE, and the CRA publishes a new certified list each tax year. NETFILE for 2025 returns opened on February 23, 2026 and runs until January 29, 2027; the 2027 opening date is not yet announced.

## Tax software for professional preparers

Consumer products are licensed for your own household. Intuit's help pages state that the TurboTax license does not allow commercial or professional tax preparation, so paid preparers use professional suites such as Drake, ProSeries, Lacerte, UltraTax or TaxWise. See [tax software for professionals](https://taxsoftwaredesk.com/pro-software) for startup and error-code help on those products.

Every mainstream program now ships an AI assistant, and the marketing around them has got loud. What each one actually does, and where it still gets 2026 rules wrong, is set out in [AI tax software](https://taxsoftwaredesk.com/choosing-software/ai-tax-software-guide).

## Common questions

### What is the best tax software for a simple W-2 return?

For a W-2 return with the standard deduction, start with IRS Free File if your AGI is $89,000 or less, or a vendor free tier such as TurboTax Free Edition or H&R Block Free Online. Both vendor tiers are limited to simple Form 1040 returns.

### Is free tax software safe to use?

Products offered through IRS.gov/freefile are IRS Free File partners, and all authorized e-file providers transmit returns through the IRS system. Reach Free File offers through IRS.gov rather than a search ad so you land on the no-cost version.

### Does it matter which tax software I use for my refund?

No. Every product applies the same tax law, so identical inputs should produce the same refund. Differences usually mean a form, deduction or credit was entered differently.

### When will 2027 tax software be available?

New editions for tax year 2026 are not yet released or dated as of September 2026. Vendors usually release them in late fall, and some forms are not final until January or later.

### Can I switch tax software from one year to the next?

Yes. Most products import a PDF of last year's Form 1040, and H&R Block's downloadable software can also read a TurboTax desktop .tax file. Keep a PDF of every filed return for this reason.

### Which tax software works on Windows 10?

Online products run in a browser, so they work on Windows 10. TurboTax Desktop 2025 does not; H&R Block's requirements page listed Windows 10 or higher for its software when checked in September 2026.
